GREAT WAKERING: Rochford Parish #1 of 14
So after filming both Canvey Island and Leigh on Sea after the Kent trip, I found myself with plenty of time left to do a little extra on the same evening. It was still nice outside and I had plenty of energy left, not to mention a lot of camera battery! I didn't think being sat in a hotel room in Southend was the right thing to be doing when I could be out filming this little peach of a place.
This is only four miles from Southend, but it feels like a world away. Southend is quite an urban locality, and it you walk around the town centre you get the impression you're almost in a city. This village has no such feeling to it, and with it being close to the coast as well (and not a beachy coast either), this may as well be the other end of the country.
A village that was forged around the old brickworks, and today with a population of over 5,000 people, the folk here have a storied past and plenty of old buildings to show it. There's any number of halls which can be used as venues for various functions, not to mention there's four pubs that line the High Street here, meaning you're never short of a place to find a drink.
The 1953 Canvey Island floods affected this village is pretty much the same was as they did there, but despite the church of St Nicholas being only 18 feet above sea level, that survived whilst the rest of the village was swamped by the floodwaters. Most of the land around the village is MOD property, Foulness Island is a place you need permission to access (and to film in fact, which is going to be fun when I attempt Foulness CP!), unless you're willing to walk The Broomway - the most dangerous path in Britain - via Wakering Stairs - which is the only other legal way onto it.
Welcome to the first parish of the fourteen in the district of Rochford. A small elongated area of Essex lined with creeks and islands, but a whole lot of character. Here's my tour of GREAT WAKERING.

HORKSTOW: North Lincolnshire Parish #10 of 56
This is one of the five “Low Villages” between Brigg and the River Humber, so-called because of their position below the Northern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Itwas previously part of Glanford administrative district, and before that, the North Lindsey division of Lindsey, Lincolnshire. According to A Dictionary of British Place Names, its name probably means shelter for animals or people
There are three listed buildings of particular historic note. One of those gave its name to a traditional Lincolnshire folk tune. In 1937 Percy Grainger used it as part of his Lincolnshire Posy suite. Historically there’s a bit here. A 4th century Roman mosaic - a tessellated pavement depicting Greek mythological figures – was found and was taken to the British Museum in 1927 on permanent loan, but was transferred to the Hull and East Riding Museum in 1974
The parish church is dedicated to St Maurice, and is Grade I listed. It was built supposedly by The Knights Templar in the early 12th century, though in fact they had nothing to do with the church. Within the church is an oval, marble tablet to Catherine Ayers dating to 1759, and at the East end of the nave, one to Rear Admiral Thomas Shirley – the leader of Shirley's Gold Coast expedition, dated to 1814
A suspension bridge is not something you’d expect to see in a village this small, but here we find the only suspension bridge designed by Sir John Rennie. The ironwork was supplied by Messrs John and Edward Walker of Gospel Oak Ironworks, in Tipton, Staffordshire, and the bridge was completed in 1836. It links the village to Winterton. A ferry had previously connected the villages, and it is believed a bridge had occupied the site from the 18th century, providing access to the brick-making kilns located on the Winterton side.
To finish this one off, I found a fabulous rendition of that aforementioned folk tune and was granted permission by the amazing Kirsty Hannah to use it in this video. Here’s HORKSTOW.

BARLING MAGNA, ENGLAND 영국 에식스의 발링 마그나 강변 나들이
Barling Magna is a village and former civil parish, now in the civil parish of Barling Magna in Essex, England. It is located approximately 6 km northeast of Southend-on-Sea and is 29 km southeast from the county town of Chelmsford.
The area known as Essex to which the Normans came in 1066 had been settled by the Saxons for over 500 years, and nearly all of the 840 villages and hamlets bore the Saxon names which survive today. Most of the village names are recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086:
Roman remains, and field boundaries are found in the area suggests that Great Wakering (Wachelinga), Little Wakering and Barling may even date back to Roman times. What is more certain is that the suffix ‘-ing’ is an early Saxon ending dating from before 500 AD.

BREADSALL: Erewash Parish #2 of 14
This is a picturesque old village surrounded by woodland with a population of 773, with a wonderfully active community with an array of social clubs, as well as access to something called the Greenway and network of paths for both walking and cycling
The village nowadays is relatively peaceful and only gets busy during some rush hour periods when drivers use the village as a thoroughfare to the northern tip of nearby Oakwood, and further afield, to areas including Hilltop, Morley, West Hallam, Heanor and Ilkeston.
The Harpur-Crewe’s were the estate holders here, it being founded in the early 1500s by Richard Harpur who was a solicitor in London. Henry Harpur was one of his ancestors, and he would marry Lady Jane Crewe, thus becoming Henry Harpur-Crewe. The botanist Joseph Whittaker was born here in 1815[9]
The village is a very popular location for retired people who want to live comfortably in their later years, while still in reach of Derby city centre. The physician Erasmus Darwin is buried here. One of the key thinkers of the Midlands Enlightenment, he was also a natural philosopher, physiologist, slave-trade abolitionist, inventor and poet.
All around the village you will find a number of these small green areas, known as “triangles”, and they make it pretty obvious you’re in BREADSALL.

Tidal cockle paths are best short walks in Essex
Tidal, cockle paths at Leigh are among the shortest walks in Essex, and they link to The Saffron Trail, one of longest hikes. Watch video and visit my website for more details
Plenty has been written about The Broomway walk, the pre-historic, tidal path a few miles east of Leigh, off Shoebury. Much less is known about the shorter, ancient stone paths that emerge off Leigh and Chalkwell at low tide. And that's a shame. Because they offer some of the most scenic walks in Essex. And the swim at the end, on a hot day, is pretty special too.
On warm summer days, locals can be seen strolling out to Leigh Creek and The Ray for a dip. Potentially hazardous tides put some people off. Many more just don't know the cockle paths are there.
If you're going to try one of the most remarkable walks in Essex, don't go alone. Please seek advice on the day, as tides change. Ideally speak to local swimmers, or else find an Essex walking group that can help.

SWC Free Walk 166, 'The Broomway', 1/9/13.
This was the first group walk that this walker has done in this series of recordings, and the reason for that is that it's highly recommended!
This is a short walk of around 6 miles, three of which are across the notorious shifting sands of 'The Broomway', so called as the path was originally marked out by brooms. It is this latter section where it is best to use a guide, though it could be done without one with careful attention to the coastline and tide, and with good weather.
The walk starts at Churchend's Hertiage Centre, which is a former school, passes the now defunct church and pub, on through the village and then crosses some rather bland agricultural and military land. Three miles later, and the walkers arrive at Asplins Head for the walk across the sands.
Three miles later, at Wakering Stairs, a waiting coach transports the group back to the Heritage Centre for tea.
Wellington boots are recommended, but it could also be done in walking boots with gaiters, or even barefoot, as some did, though with caution.

HENHAM: Uttlesford Parish #3 of 60
There are many pretty villages all over this beautiful land we call home here in England, but there might not be many more like this one. When I visited this village, I honestly did not want to leave it! The locals are so friendly and it's such a gorgeous place to walk around. There's so much to see as well for a village of only 1,500 people.
We start in the South of the village and it takes about 20 minutes to walk the full length of it, maybe 25 if you walk to the church before continuing East to the other end along the High Street like I did. Honestly though, you'll want more than an hour to appreciate everything there is to see and do in the village.
Passing the school, you're greeted with the village pump on one of the numerous greens which are protected by the parish council, overlooked by the church hall, the phone box (yes it's a book exchange!) and something called the OSCA, which is like a village hall in all but name. The war memorial is right in the centre, equidistant from the church of St Mary the Virgin and the volunteer-run village shop.
Perhaps the most unique feature here would be the duckponds which line the High Street all the way from the war memorial to beyond the shop, and where they stop the road becomes much more rural in nature as it works its way between the thatched cottages towards the cemetery. This might be located in some of the best Essex farmland there is, but very few of the residents rely on land to survive here. This is very much a commuter village.
Home to the comedian Ed Byrne and the man who played Coronation Street's Fred Elliott, this is the village and the parish of HENHAM.

RYHILL: Wakefield Parish #10 of 30
Rycroft. Put that name into Google Maps and you won't find this parish, but trust me, that name is synonymous with this entire area. That's because it's a shortened version of this parish's name, amalgamated with the neighbours which you've already seen. Once known as Rihella, and known as being agricultural, the industries in this area once again centred around coal mining.
One of this parish's most iconic landmarks is something we can't actually access because you'll only find it a private field. That comes in the form of a well head which supplied water to the priory at nearby Nostell, possibly built in 1520. Even though a tourist attraction, it's only accessible with the permission of the farmer - and at the time of filming, the farmer in question had issues with Covid-19.
Regardless, there's still loads to see, like the site of the old railway station at the end of Ferry Top Lane, a magnificent church which serves the parish and three of the other villages around it - a church which I did get access to the interior of as well thanks to the kindness of the church warden too! There's also the excellent war memorial in the cemetery, technically one of two this village possesses.
The village, as a former mining area is quite varied these days despite the social struggles that have cropped up as a result of the mine closures. More new builds have sprung up, which also includes the GP surgery and health village. Amenities wise, you're not short of sporting facilities at Rycroft Leisure Centre, which stands right next door to Havercroft's parish hall - not located in Havercroft at all!
That's because Rycroft is referred to as such because you simply cannot separate these two from each other. They are, and forever will be entwined within each other as one huge community. This is Havercroft's bigger brother - RYHILL.
