A visit to Honfleur and Rouen in Normandy, France
Across an estuary from Le Havre, Honfleur is where the Seine reaches the English Channel. Vieux Bassin harbor is surrounded by 16th-18th C townhouses painted by Monet and Boudin. Note 15th C Eglise Sainte Catherine’s unusual structure — shipbuilders crafted its vaulted timber ceiling! Taste the oysters and the Calvados! In Rouen, admire some of the 2000 half-timbered buildings, see the WWII bullet holes in the old Hotel de Ville (City Hall), the ruins of St-Vincent Church and the site where St Joan of Arc was tried and executed. Nearby is La Couronne, where Julia Child (and so many celebrities!) ate the meal that changed her life. Cathedrale Notre-Dame was famously painted many times by Monet. St-Ouen Abbey embodies architectural history, the L’Hopital Rouen keeps its macabre secrets, and the Gros Horloge has kept time since the 1300s!

Eating at the Oldest Restaurant in France: La Courronne in Rouen.
If you are ever in Rouen France , you HAVE to have lunch at the ICONIC @lacouronnerouen. Established in 1346 It’s THE oldest restaurant in France & the 6th oldest restaurant in the world 🤯🤯🤯
It’s also the very restaurant the the OG QUEEN of tv cooking Julia Child fell in love with French cooking. The restaurant is decorated with photos of the hundreds of celebrities, politicians and royalty that have dined there.
As you would expect it was the best of classic French cooking…. My 4 course set menu was €57 euros with 2 glasses of wine and water it came up to €83. Worth every cent.

Exploring Rouen France & Trying Alcohol Free Beer

Today we explore the fascinating and lively city of Rouen in France! This was a last minute add to my itinerary and I am SO glad I added it. I think it is a MUST add destination for your next trip to France. It is full of history yet has a youthful and young feel to it. There is a lot of old architecture to see and a lot of new developments that showcase the cities youthful spirit. Rouen is known as a University town and full of young people socializing in the streets. The Gross Horlage is the cities crown jewel ready for all to see. A Pro tip, when you get to the horlage, make sure to look up as you walk underneath it! Rouen is also home to Monets beloved Notre Dame cathedral. I also learned that Rouen is the home to the Joan of Arc Experience and Museum. Joan of Arc is the most prominent piece of their history and they have many things dedicated to her. However, their historical significance is much greater than I knew! For a long time Rouen was the second most important and largest city in France due to their ability to gate keep the Seine River and protect Paris.
In this weeks video we explore the town of Rouen and see some of the fun little tourist attractions. But make sure to stick around and laugh at me trying 0% alcohol beer, a boiling pot of fondue, and some more French baked goods.

Il nostro Viaggio in Francia fa tappa a Rouen, bellissima città dell'alta Normandia, legata a tantissimi personaggi famosi della storia, dell'arte e della letteratura, da Flaubert a Monet a Riccardo Cuor di Leone. E siamo stati a cena a La Couronne, una locanda che era già aperta da quasi cent'anni quando, proprio nella piazza antistante, nel 1431 è stata arsa viva Giovanna D'Arco! 😮

Alors, je vais bien être clair, je suis régulièrement en contact avec différents sites historiques et je suis particulièrement attaché au patrimoine français et à celui de l'humanité en général. La cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris est située sur l'île de la Cité. Dédiée à la Vierge Marie, pendant de nombreux siècles cette cathédrale est l'une des plus grandes d'Occident. Longtemps la plus haute construction de la ville, elle est l'un des monuments les plus emblématiques de Paris. Elle a inspiré de nombreuses œuvres, notamment le roman de Victor Hugo Notre-Dame de Paris. Au début du XXIe siècle, la cathédrale est visitée chaque année par quelque 13 à 14 millions de personnesa. L’édifice, aussi basilique mineure, est ainsi le monument le plus visité en France et en Europe et l'un des plus visités au monde. Commencée sous l'impulsion de l'évêque Maurice de Sully, sa construction s'étend sur plus de deux siècles, de 1163 au milieu du XIVe siècle. Après la Révolution française, la cathédrale bénéficie entre 1844 et 1864 d'une importante restauration, parfois controversée, sous la direction de l’architecte Viollet-le-Duc, qui y incorpore des éléments et des motifs inédits. Pour ces raisons, le style n’est pas d'une uniformité totale : la cathédrale possède des caractères du gothique primitif et du gothique rayonnant. Les deux rosaces, qui ornent chacun des bras du transept, sont parmi les plus grandes d’Europe. Édifice à la fois religieux et patrimonial, elle est liée à de nombreux épisodes de l’histoire de France. Église paroissiale royale au Moyen Âge, elle accueille l’arrivée de la Sainte Couronne en 1239, puis le sacre de Napoléon Ier en 1804, le baptême du duc de Bordeaux en 1821 et les funérailles de plusieurs présidents de la IIIe République (Adolphe Thiers, Sadi Carnot, Paul Doumer). C'est aussi sous ses voûtes qu'est chanté un Magnificat lors de la libération de Paris en 1944 et qu'ont lieu des cérémonies à la mort des présidents Charles de Gaulle (1970), Georges Pompidou (1974) et François Mitterrand (1996). En 2013, le 850e anniversaire de sa construction est célébré. Le 15 avril 2019, un violent incendie détruit la flèche et la totalité de la toiture couvrant la nef, le chœur et le transept. Des voutes formant le plafond s'écroulent également (celle du chœur, une travée dans la nef, et celle du transept nord).

Rouen, situated on the banks of the River Seine, is Normandy’s vibrant, historic and cultural capital. Monet’s famous depictions of Rouen Cathedral have made this vast edifice many visitors’ favourite building in the city, but there are also many fine museums to explore, not to mention the Gros Horloge clock tower, France’s oldest inn La Couronne and the beautiful modern church dedicated to Joan of Arc.
DISCOVER ROUEN’S HISTORIC QUARTERS In medieval times, lords and the prosperous merchants of the city, as well as commissioning fine homes for themselves, supported the building of great religious buildings. Lined up in a row going from east to west through the centre of town is a string of tremendous churches – Saint-Ouen, Saint-Maclou, Notre Dame Cathedral and the modern church dedicated to Joan of Arc. It wasn’t for nothing that Victor Hugo famously described Rouen as ‘the city of a hundred spires’.
In addition, don’t miss the Gros Horloge astronomic clock, the splendid gothic architecture of the Palais de Justice and the Aître Saint-Maclou, whose carved skull and crossbones make it one of the most striking medieval cemeteries in Europe.
Rouen’s historic centre is also packed with tempting shops and restaurants, and great weekly markets. This being a university town, there is a thriving nightlife too.
A stunning Gothic cathedral, Renaissance clock, majestic churches, world-class museums, parks and gardens – Rouen is steeped in fascinating history and heritage.
AMAZING HERITAGE Rouen boasts the second largest number of listed buildings in France after Paris! Here are just a few of the city’s unmissable sites:
Notre-Dame Cathedral: This exceptional cathedral, the tallest in France, is renowned for its elaborate gothic architecture. Its stunning façade was painted over thirty times by the artist Claude Monet, who depicted its glory in different lights. Inside are artistic and religious relics, including the heart of Richard the Lionheart, buried in a tomb here. Miraculously the cathedral has survived the Wars of Religion, the French Revolution and more recently the Second World War, and is a must-see when in Rouen.
Gros-Horloge: This large clock tower straddling Rouen’s main shopping street is one of the most photographed landmarks in Rouen, and is open to the public. Journey back to the Renaissance period, enjoy panoramic views of Rouen’s medieval centre from the top of the tower, then sip a coffee on a terrace nearby looking up at the beautiful astronomical clock.
Eglise Sainte Jeanne d’Arc: Completed in 1979, this striking modern church rises over the Place du Vieux Marché, where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake. Although the architecture is bold and contemporary, it also features beautiful stained glass windows from the 16th century, salvaged from other Rouen churches.
Tour Jeanne d’Arc: This imposing tower is all that remains of the mighty castle French king Philippe Auguste had built in Rouen after he had booted Plantagenet King John of England out of France at the start of the 13th century. When English forces were back in control of Normandy in the second half of the Hundred Years’ War, Joan of Arc was held in this fortress and threatened with torture. The tower is now home to an exciting escape game experience.
Historial Jeanne d’Arc (opened 2015): This state-of-the-art museum is dedicated to Joan of Arc, and takes visitors on an interactive journey through her triumphs, trials and tragic martyrdom. The setting is appropriate given the Salle de l’Officialité in the museum was where Joan was tried and condemned to death in 1431. This same chamber witnessed the Maid of Orléans’ posthumous rehabilitation trial in 1456, held once the French were back in control of Normandy.
Eglise Saint-Maclou: This gem of flamboyant gothic architecture can be found just behind the cathedral in one of the most beautiful historic quarters of Rouen, characterised by magnificent half-timbered houses.
Aître Saint-Maclou: A parish cemetery was created here during the Black Plague in 1348, but later, buildings went up around it to serve as ossuaries for the large number of bones from the cemetery. Half-timbering is carved with skulls and cross-bones and grave-diggers’ implements, clearly indicating the former purpose of these buildings. It now houses a new centre dedicated to local arts and crafts.
Palais de Justice: This ornate gothic building, the former parliament of Normandy, is arguably one of the finest examples of medieval civic architecture in France.
Maison Sublime: Excavations at the Palais de Justice in the 1970s revealed the medieval remnants of the oldest Jewish building known in France, and the only example of a medieval rabbinic school remaining in Europe. The name derives from an inscription found declaring ‘Let this abode be sublime.’

Ucetia, ville d'eau C'est au bord de l'Alzon, autour de la source d'Eure, que l'on trouve les premières traces d'ouvrage humain à Uzès. Au début de notre ère, les Romains y captent une eau abondante. Elle est acheminée jusqu'à Nîmes par un aqueduc de 50 km, dont le Pont du Gard est la partie la plus remarquable.
Uzès, cité des évêques L'évêché d'Uzès est créé au Ve siècle après J.-C. sur le modèle de l'organisation romaine. Jusqu'à la Révolution paraît-il, les évêques d'Uzès battaient monnaie et rendaient la justice : prérogatives qui témoignent de leur grande puissance. Au XVIIIe siècle, le diocèse d'Uzès compte 193 paroisses, figurant ainsi parmi l'un des plus vastes du Languedoc.
Uzès, 1er Duché de France En 1229, le Languedoc, dont Uzès fait partie, est rattaché à la couronne de France. En 1565, Charles IX élève le comte de Crussol à la dignité de duc afin de s'assurer du loyalisme de ce dernier envers la couronne. En 1632, le Duc d'Uzès est 1er duc de France. Le Duché situé au coeur de la ville appartient toujours à la famille ducale qui y séjourne depuis plus de 1000 ans.
Uzès, huguenote Au 16e siècle, Uzès était la cinquième ville protestante du royaume. Mais le temple d'Uzès est détruit lors des guerres de religion. En 1685, Louis XIV révoque l'Edit de Nantes : les protestants uzétiens se convertissent ou choisissent de s'expatrier dans toute l'Europe.
Uzès, la belle Au XXe siècle, Uzès prend un nouveau souffle avec le classement de son centre-ville en secteur sauvegardé le 5 janvier 1965. Depuis, Uzès continue à s'embellir : pavage des rues, mise en discrétion des fils électriques, restauration immobilière de 12 hectares en 1965, ce sont aujourd'hui 41 hectares de la ville qui sont classés selon les modalités de la loi Malraux. Depuis le début des années cinquante, le développement économique a repris grâce au tourisme mais aussi à l'installation de grands établissements tels que le centre hospitalier psychiatrique départemental et le nouvel Hôpital Local, CHU d'Uzès, l'entreprise Haribo, le Haras National et de nombreuses PME. Classée Ville d'art et d'histoire depuis novembre 2008, Uzès bénéficie d'une renommée internationale et l'on se déplace des quatre coins de la planète pour arpenter ses rues et admirer son patrimoine.
Église Saint-Étienne d'Uzès L'église de style baroque a été construite de 1764 à 1774 sous l'épiscopat de Monseigneur Bonaventure Baüyn, 63ème évêque d'Uzès. Elle est réalisée par l'architecte avignonnais, Pierre Bondon à l'emplacement d'une ancienne église détruite pendant les guerres de religion, après l'avoir transformée en magasin et en arsenal2. Seul le clocher du XIIIe siècle est conservé. Il servait de tour de guet et de défense. L'édifice est classé au titre des monuments historiques en 19741.

STOP ONE: MUSÉE DE LA REDDITION 12 Rue du Président Franklin Roosevelt, 51100 Reims
Welcome to the Musée de la Reddition, a significant site in global history. This building was once the headquarters for General Dwight D. Eisenhower during WWII. It was here, on May 7, 1945, where Germany officially surrendered, ending WWII in Europe. The museum showcases the War Room, left as it was since the day of the surrender. Can you imagine? In this room, decisions that shaped the course of history were made.
You'll find numerous exhibits depicting the lives of soldiers and civilians during the war. Original maps, photos, and documents provide a snapshot of the era. The museum also houses a remarkable collection of military uniforms and weaponry. There's an educational film about the end of the war, shown in the old projection room.
Remarkably, the museum operates in the same school where American soldiers once billeted. Musée de la Reddition is a poignant reminder of the gravity of war and the relief of peace. A visit here is an evocative step back into a world-changing event.

Behold the grandeur of the Notre-Dame of Reims, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Did you know this cathedral has witnessed the crowning of 25 French kings? Its construction began in 1211 and took almost a century to complete.
Notice the intricate facades adorned with over 2,300 statues, each telling a unique story. The Smiling Angel, or L'Ange au Sourire, is one of the cathedral's most beloved statues. The cathedral suffered significant damage in WWI but was carefully restored.

The Presqu’île is the heart of Lyon, France. Extending from the foot of the Croix Rousse hill to the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône rivers, it has a preponderance of cafés, restaurants, luxury shops, department stores, banks, government buildings, and cultural institutions. The 1st and 2nd arrondissements of the city (as well as the southern part of the 4th) are located here, along with the Hôtel de Ville (city hall). The spires of the church of St. Nizier, reconstructed starting in the 14th century, are at the foot of the former Saône river bridge. Though the business center is located to the east in the 3rd arrondissement, road signs pointing to the centre of the city take drivers to Place Bellecour in the 2nd.
This district was an important counterpoint to the Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Many picturesque streets still exist. Among these is the rue Mercière, where printers and booksellers gravitated in the 15th and 16th centuries and which still has some superb buildings. The Museum of Printing, housed in the former Hôtel de la Couronne, explains how Lyon’s first books were printed. Squares, in many cases decorated with fountains, and churches sprinkled throughout evoke the presence of numerous convents, including those of the Dominicans (Jacobins), the Celestines and the Conventual Franciscans (Cordeliers), whose Saint Bonaventure church was rebuilt in the 14th century. Further south, the church of Saint-Martin d’Ainay in the Ainay area was originally the church of Ainay Abbey, a large Benedictine monastery, and is still a jewel of Romanesque art in Lyon.

The Hôtel de Ville, or City Hall, was built between 1646 and 1655 by the architect Simon Maupin and decorated by the painter Thomas Blanchet. In 1674 the Great Hall was ravaged by fire, and the façade facing the square was redesigned in the early 18th century by Jules Hardouin Mansart.
The Saint Pierre Palace, formerly a royal Benedictine abbey, was built starting in 1659 by the Avignon architect François Royers de la Valfenière. It now houses the Museum of Fine Arts. The public garden in the former cloister is decorated with the work of famous sculptors and is a quiet, urban oasis. In the 17th and 18th centuries the place Bellecour was created in honor of King Louis XIV.
Nowadays the Place des Terreaux hosts several restaurants and an impressive statue of a woman on a chariot, and is a common sightseeing destination within Lyon. Germain Soufflot expanded the hospital located near the old Rhône bridge, building the Hôtel-Dieu along the banks of the river. Nowadays the hospital is closed. Works is underway to renovate the building, which will host a five stars hotel, shops, offices, habitations and the new Cité de la gastronomie. Numerous hôtels particuliers were built in the vicinity of the place Bellecour. The Hôtel du Gouverneur, built in 1730, now houses the Musée des Tissus (Museum of Fabric) and the Hôtel de Lacroix Laval, designed by Soufflot, is now the Museum of Decorative Arts. In 1855, during France’s Second Empire period, Claude-Marius Vaïsse, Prefect of the Rhône département, created the rue de la République and the rue Edouard Herriot as part of a series of large construction projects. The Stock Exchange, built in 1860, is an example of the Napoleon III style and is in the heart of the banking district. In the 19th century, two theatres were built: the Célestins Theatre and the Grand Theatre, the latter of which is now the opera house, rebuilt in 1993 by Jean Nouvel. These are two of the city’s major cultural centers.
