Top Tourist Attractions in Poland 🇵🇱 | Poland Travel Guide 🥟

After enduring centuries of war, Poland has emerged as a proud, independent nation, prepared to step into her new position in modern history. Locals have long understood that Poland is a nation rich in good culture, beautiful landscapes, and extraordinary historical landmarks. Now, tourists are learning this as well.

Polish borders the Baltic Sea and Lithuania to the north, Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and Germany to the west. Poland is a country in northeastern Europe. With coastal plains to the north and mountain ranges to the south, its geography is stunning. A vast network of rivers, with the Vistula River being the longest, divides the nation in half.

There are a number of places in Poland that should be visited. Krakow's Main Market Square is a fantastic place to go. This is a very large town square in the mediaeval style, and the surrounding structures date back more than a thousand years. Auschwitz-Birkenau, which housed a sizable Nazi concentration camp during World War II, is a more dramatic venue to visit. Poland's largest city, Warsaw, serves as both the nation's capital and geographic centre. With about 2.7 million people living in the greater metropolitan region, it serves as a major economic and tourist destination.

Wolf's Lair (German: Wolfsschanze; Polish: Wilczy Szaniec) was Adolf Hitler's first Eastern Front military headquarters in World War II. The complex, which became one of several Führerhauptquartiere (Führer Headquarters) in various parts of eastern Europe, was built for the start of Operation Barbarossa – the invasion of the Soviet Union – in 1941. It was constructed by Organisation Todt.

The top secret, high security site was in the Masurian woods about 8 km (5.0 mi) east of the small East Prussian town of Rastenburg (now in Gierłoż, Kętrzyn County, Poland). Three security zones surrounded the central complex where the Führer's bunker was located. These were guarded by personnel from the SS Reichssicherheitsdienst and the Wehrmacht's armoured Führerbegleitbrigade. Despite the security, the most notable assassination attempt against Hitler was made at the Wolf's Lair on 20 July 1944.

Hitler first arrived at the headquarters on 23 June 1941. In total, he spent more than 800 days at the Wolfsschanze during a 3½-year period until his final departure on 20 November 1944. In mid-1944, work began to enlarge and reinforce many of the Wolf's Lair original buildings. The work was never completed because of the rapid advance of the Red Army during the Baltic Offensive in late 1944. On 25 January 1945, the complex was blown up and abandoned 48 hours before the arrival of Soviet forces.

The headquarters was located in the Masurian woods, near the village of Görlitz in Ostpreußen (now Gierłoż), about 8 kilometres (5 miles) east of the small East Prussian town of Rastenburg (now Kętrzyn), in present-day Poland. The central complex and the Führer's bunker were surrounded by three security zones guarded by two Schutzstaffel (SS) units: the SS-Begleitkommando des Führers, and the Reichssicherheitsdienst. The Wehrmacht's armoured Führerbegleitbrigade was held in readiness nearby but, as a part of the Heer's elite Großdeutschland Division, was used to counter-attack Red Army break-throughs in Army Group Centre's front and rescue cut-off Heer, Luftwaffe Fallschirmjager and SS panzer troops.

The 20 July Plot, an assassination attempt against Hitler, took place at the Wolf's Lair on 20 July 1944.[1] Source: Wikipedia

Wolfsschanze (Wilczy Szaniec), Kr.

Bunker. Na und? - fragen Sie. Nichts Neues.
