Meissen in Germany is a town of approximately 30,000 about 25 km (16 mi) northwest of Dresden on both banks of the Elbe river in the Free State of Saxony, in eastern Germany. Meissen is the home of Meissen porcelain, the Albrechtsburg castle, the Gothic Meissen Cathedral and the Meissen Frauenkirche. The Große Kreisstadt is the capital of the Meissen district. Meissen is sometimes known as the cradle of Saxony. The city grew out of the early Slavic settlement of Misni inhabited by the Glomacze tribe and was founded as a German town by King Henry the Fowler in 929.[2] In 968, the Diocese of Meissen was founded, and Meissen became the episcopal see of a bishop. The Catholic bishopric was suppressed in 1581 after the diocese accepted the Protestant Reformation (1559), but re-created in 1921 with its seat first at Bautzen and now at the Katholische Hofkirche in Dresden.

A brief history and tour of Colditz Castle in the state of Saxony, Germany. This 16th century castle was notorious as Oflag IV-C, a German prison camp for Allied officer POWs during World War II. Many escape attempts were made, and prisoners sewed and dyed German uniforms to disguise their escapes. Most famous of all was the 2-man glider prisoners built in the attic to attempt to fly off the roof to freedom.

Educational estate Schmochtitz St. Benno | Schlösserland Sachsen
The history of the Schmochtitz St. Benno educational estate ( near Bautzen in Upper Lusatia dates back to the 12th century - when the Via Regia probably ran through here. Between 1925 and 1945, the Catholic Church established a seminary until Gut Schmochtitz was completely destroyed in the last days of the war. Since the reconstruction of the manor house, it has been an educational and conference center of the diocese of Dresden-Meissen. Gut Schmochtitz has 140 beds in 80 rooms and eleven vacation apartments. With its paradise garden and rococo park, it is part of the Via Sacra, which connects art treasures in the border triangle.
