Garrucha, a municipality in the province of Almería, Andalusia, Spain, has a rich history dating back to the Moorish period. The first written reference to Garrucha is from the 14th century, when the Moors referred to it as Almorac Nazari.
In the 16th century, Garrucha was a small fishing village, but it began to grow in importance in the 17th and 18th centuries due to its port. The port was used to export lead, silver, copper, iron, esparto grass, and fruit.
In the 19th century, Garrucha became a popular tourist destination for wealthy Spanish families. This was due to its beautiful beaches, mild climate, and proximity to the Sierra Cabrera mountain range.
In the early 20th century, Garrucha's economy was boosted by the mining of gypsum in the nearby town of Sorbas. Gypsum is a mineral used to make plaster, drywall, and other building materials. Garrucha's port is still used to export gypsum today.
Today, Garrucha is a popular tourist destination for people from all over the world. Visitors come to Garrucha to enjoy its beaches, seafood, and Mediterranean lifestyle.

SORBAS - Almeria, Spain
Personal record of a walk around Sorbas, a pueblo about 40km (25miles) inland from Vera Playa or Mojacar areas. If you have seen the never ending stream of lorries coming to and from Garrucha port, carrying their 24 ton loads of gypsum, then a few km/miles before Sorbas is where they collect it, on the right heading towards Sorbas, you can see the dust for miles. Anyway, Sorbas is a pleasant yet quite dramatic place, the old part almost being an island with the Rio Aguas around it. From the main road looking up, houses are perched on the cliffside. There is a one way system in the pueblo due to the narrow streets it has. There is a pleasant plaza in the centre with the doughnut shaped trees for shade. This was one stop on a day out, visiting Sorbas, Agua Amarga, Carboneras, Macenas, Mojacar Playa and back to Garrucha. There is a dashcam video of the drive and another video of Agua Amarga and Carboneras. There are already videos of Macenas, Mojacar and Garrucha on our channel.
