Ambuluwawa temple is a beautiful and scenic temple situated on a sacred mountain in Gampola town, Sri Lanka. It is known as possibly the best viewpoint to get the magnificent views around. It has a 360 degree when you are on the top of the tower.
Reaching to the top is a challenging effort, however it is not too difficult. There are tuk tuks available to reach the complex for your convenience. If the day is clear, you will be charmed by the views and will want to stay there forever gazing all around like I did.
It is interesting to see a Church, Hindu temple, Mosque and Buddhist shrine all together in this place and it is considered as a biodiversity complex.
Ambuluwawa tower is a very attracting design and more and more you step up, it gets narrower and narrower. At the height, the feeling you get while hitting the wind is an absolute marvel. At an elevation of 3567 feet, it is visible marvelously from the Gampola town, specially from the Gampola station.

Ever heard of Ambuluwawa Tower? If you’re in Sri Lanka for a day tour or a round tour Ambuluwawa Tower is one of the must see sites in Sri Lanka. You can get to Ambuluwawa Tower from Kandy or Gampola. Little knowledge about this site are, it is 3567 meters above from the sea level and there are 200 plants which belongs to 80 species. We know the climb to the top is a bit tough but then again you know hardest climbs always gives the best views. Some of the best views you can admire from this tower is, from
South –Sri Pada or Adams Peak
North –Mountain range of Knuckles
West –Bathalegala or Bible Rock
East –Piduruthalagala Mountain
If you visit on a day that has a clear sky and not misty you’ll be able to see the breathtaking view of Hanthana Mountain Range, Hunnasgiriya and the mountains in the Nuwara Eliya district. The Hanthana Mountain Range is known for being a lone warrior capable of withstanding anything that would be put its way, and home to many travelers and joyously giving out adventure to any who would seek it.
Moving along, Ambuluwawa Tower is the first Multi Religious Centre in Sri Lanka. You can see a Temple, Kovil, Mosque and a Church. It is known that Ambuluwawa Temple is an evocative of a Buddhist ‘stupa’ with a height of 48 meters. This Multi Religious Centre shows the perfect Harmony and Unity among us Sri Lankans from the beginning. Ambuluwawa is located in Gampola, Kandy District. This was done by former Prime Minister DM Jayaratne. Many local and foreign tourists come here. The entry fee is 90 and it takes about 2 hours to reach the top of the mountain. It has a beautiful ecosystem that is interesting to watch. It is easily accessible by motorbike. This is a beautiful tourist destination in Sri Lanka.

Ambuluwawa Tower
Ambuluwawa Tower is known as Govi Jana Seya in Sinhala. The 48 m high conical structure is a magnificent structure that allows you to walk to the top of the stupa. Many observation decks have been created to see the stunning surroundings that you can only see on the top of Ambuluwawa hill when you walk to the top of this stupa which is not seen in any other Buddhist temple. As you ascend the stairs, the width of the stairs decreases and it takes on a spiral shape.
Ambuluwawa History
The great Sinhala King Buvanekabahu IV founded the Gampola Kingdom (1341-1357 AD). Mayura Sandesa's 14th-century messenger poetry depicts this enchanting rock and its surroundings in this way.
“When the stars are just beginning to fade in their positions in the sky when the soft scent of flowers wafts softly over the leaves When the sun first rises and casts its rays over the Eastern peaks Go on from Ambuluwakada with a happy heart.” (Mayura Sandesa - Verses 25 & 26)
🌙 How to get to Ambuluwawa
Colombo to Ambuluwawa: If you are traveling from Colombo, there is a 28.1 km short route from Mawanella to Ambuluwawa Temple through Ginihappitiya Hemmatagama that would bypass Kandy and Gampola, which is 43 km. The carpeted road is quite easy to reach.
Arriving by train from Colombo, you can get off at the Gampola Railway Station that enjoying the beauty of the beautiful surroundings on the way. Gampola can also be reached by bus from Colombo.
Kandy to Ambuluwawa: It is 24.8 km from Kandy to Ambuluwawa. If you come by public transport, first you have to reach Gampola. There is a 5.2 km from Gampola Railway Station to Ambuluwawa Mountain Hill. You can easily find a tuk-tuk or taxi from Gampola town to Ambuluwawa temple.
Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex is Sri Lanka's first multi-religious sanctuary.
Ambuluwalwa is considered one of the must-visit places in Gampola, a small town situated close to Kandy. It is about 1,965 feet from the level of Gampola town. The entire place is richly diverse, comprising of evergreen forests, blossomed flower plants as well creepers, with about 200 different kinds of plants from 80 plant families. A number of medicinal plants are also grown here, namely Iramusu, Muva Kiriya, and Nawa Handi.
There is a key reason behind the cool mountain air. Ambuluwawa is surrounded by other mountains such as Pidurutalagala on the Eastern side, Bathalagela (Bible Rock) on the West, Sri Pada (Adams Peak) to the South, and the Knuckles range in the North. Ambuluwala is the only Sri Lankan mountain peak surrounded by other mountains adding exquisite beauty to the scenery.
The Ambuluwawa summit has more scenic qualities, with water and stone parks, as well twin ponds; deer are also seen on the top of the mountain. You can spend some relaxing time with your family and get some amazing pictures from the top of the mountain.
Apart from this, Nelligala Mountain, Alagalla Mountain, Kadugannawa Mountain, Hanthana Mountain, Hunnasgiriya Mountain, and the entire hills of the Nuwara Eliya district can be seen from the top of Ambuluwawa Hill. The Mahaweli River and its adjoining fields add to the beauty of the place.
Who wouldn't like to spend a moment in the clouds above, at a region with mountains in all four directions and such coolness? It will undoubtedly offer a sense of calm to our stressful life.

King Buwanekabahu IV, who ruled for four years in the mid-fourteenth century, established Gampola as the island's capital. King Buwanekabahu V, who reigned in Gampola for 29 years, was the final king of the island.
Gampola, also known as Gangasiripura due to the Mahaweli river flowing by its side, is a lovely town situated 300–500 meters above sea level in a valley surrounded by hills and close to Kandy.
