Travel Spartanburg-South Carolina-Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve

Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve is a 10-acre (40,000 m2) public garden located at 820 John B. White Sr. Blvd. in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Admission is free and the garden is open to the public during daylight hours.

In 1969, Harold and Josephine Hatcher retired to Spartanburg, South Carolina and began developing the land behind their home on Briarwood Road. Over the next thirty years they acquired property totaling 10 acres (40,000 m2). Much of the land was in ruin: erosion from the former cotton fields had robbed the soil of its nutrients. Trash and weeds covered the ground.

The Hatchers began working and amending the soil. They filled in the eroded lands, built paths and ponds, and planted thousands of trees, shrubs and flowers.

The Hatchers were not wealthy landowners. Limited in resources, but not in creative vision, they raised money for their projects by buying and self-renovating adjacent properties for rental income. They chose to give the Garden to the Spartanburg County Foundation which leaves the garden to the Spartanburg community in perpetuity.

Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve was named a TripAdvisors 2020 Travelers’ Choice Winner. It is in the top 10% of attractions WORLDWIDE! Each year, TripAdvisor combs through reviews, ratings and saves from travelers everywhere, and use that information to award the very best. It was also named Number One of 36 things to do in Spartanburg.

Gaffney Spartanburg KOA

On my way to Georgia, my GPS predicted I would arrive in Atlanta at precisely 5:00 pm. Not wanting to go through the middle of that monstrous rush hour from hell, I decided to spend the night at a convenient KOA between Gaffney and Spartanburg, SC, and continue my trip the next morning. It was such a nice campground and the staff so friendly, I decided to post this video to give you a look at a wonderful place to stop over for a night or spend a few days. Really wanted to go fishing but forgot to bring my fishing rod.
If you are traveling I-85 through SC, this is a great place to stop. The ABAM is easily recognizable.
