The Magic of Snow ❄️ is here.
#shorts Snow is rather rare. And it makes the charming old town of Freudenberg even more beautiful. Stunning.
Freudenberg is a true hidden gem. It is a small town in Siegerland. That is a district in North Rhine Westphalia. Freudenberg distinguishes itself as a unique ensemble of black and white timber-frame houses. In a way, this town is like Monreal: that has Red and White timber-frame houses. But the layout of Freudenberg is a grid: straight lines with all the houses facing the same direction. The effect of this can best be seen from the hill at edge of the Alter Flecken, old town Freudenberg.
The old town is called “Alter Flecken”. The word “Flecken” might refer to being a market town. In 1540 much of the town burned down. Prince Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen built the town anew. The new town used the same layout as it had before the fire. Rows of houses.
All the houses are roughly the same shape and size. But if you look closely you can see details that makes every house unique. Some have painted wooden panes as windows. Some have a unique colouring of the horizontal beams. All houses are bright white, with black beams and dark tiles on the west sides of the houses.
The area draws numerous hikers and cyclists to Freudenberg. In the summer there are popular performances on an open-air stage.
Freudenberg is on the “Orange Route”: a holiday route that runs from Amsterdam through The Netherlands and Germany. The route visits castles, towns and cities with historic ties to the House of Orange-Nassau. The most notable locations on that route are: Amsterdam, Schwerin, Wernigerode, Bad Pyrmont, Potsdam, Delft and The Hague.

FREUDENBERG °Alter Flecken° Centro histórico único Alemania Old Spot Old town Germany Deutschland
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The “Alter Flecken”, the “Old Town”, the “Old Spot” of Freudenberg is one of the few examples of a planned, half-timbered town from the 17th century that has preserved its original structure to this day.
“Old Spot” is a picturesque photo motif with all its half-timbered houses built in the same direction. And although they all look the same, each one has its own design, its own “fingerprint”. The “Kurpark” offers the best view of this beautiful and special old town.
Here we see the 4 parallel streets: Marktstraße, Mittelstraße, Unterstraße and Poststraße and also some of the narrow alleys that connect them.
° RECENT HISTORY of the “Alter Flecken”: In August 1666, lightning caused a fire in the city. Only one house was left standing. The reconstruction of the city began immediately and was carried out according to a uniform plan by order of the then sovereign, Prince Johann Moritz von Nassau. The previous street pattern and the remaining foundation walls and vaults were adopted without changes to the structure of the new houses.
The historic city center survived World War II without major damage. The old town of Freudenberg is therefore one of the few examples of a planned, half-timbered town from the 17th century that has preserved its original structure to the present day.
Visiting an unknown castle: the Freudenburg
The small town of Freudenberg in Baden-Württemberg (not to be confused with other Freudenbergs) is largely undiscovered by tourists, but includes a real 12th-century castle you can visit any time you want, and for free. I decided to take a look, and I wasn't disappointed.

Freudenberg Castle / Burg Freudenberg 2022
In 1197, Bishop Heinrich III. build a residential tower from Berg . Under the Würzburg bishop Konrad I von Querfurt there was another construction phase, but on a smaller scale. The Counts of Wertheim were probably fiefs of the castle from the start. But only in 1295 with the feudal taking of castrum et oppidum Freudenberg by Kunigunde von Wertheim , they can definitely be proven.
In 1361, among other things, the curtain wall and the palace were built by Eberhard von Wertheim .
Another expansion and expansion of the castle into a fortified fortress with an imposing Renaissance building was carried out between 1497 and 1507 by Count Erasmus von Wertheim . A fore bailey was built through massive embankments . The imposing four-storey cannon tower on the Main side and a forecourt to secure the southern mountain side were built. Another protective wall with three small round towers was placed in front of the kennel wall . The wall closed up to the south-west gate, which was additionally secured by a closed interior and a tower. Only after passing through a second and third gate was access to the Main castle possible. This was fenced in in an almost triangular plan. In the south-west corner is the Palas, in the north-east corner there is another stone building of almost the same size and in the south-east the famous three-story, oversized keep . Another small third stone building leaned south against the battlement . The most recently built outer defensive wall was extended to the west and east down the mountainside to the Main and enclosed the castle town of Freudenberg. This castle extension , probably based on Breuberg Castle , was Erasmus (also Asmus ) von Wertheim's last life's work. He died in 1509.
The castle was only the Burgmannen - and administrative seat. In 1552 it was badly damaged in the Markgräflerkrieg and with the extinction of the Wertheimers in 1556, the castle gradually fell into disrepair. The administration was moved to the city and only the cannon tower (especially in the witch trials after 1590) was still used as a prison.
With the end of the Middle Ages, the castle fell into disrepair and overgrown with scrub and trees. It was forgotten for centuries. It was only after the Second World War that a citizens' initiative campaigned for the castle. It was gradually uncovered and renovated and returned to the public in 1995 in a new condition. At the moment (as of 2012) the ring walls to the site and the cannon tower are being renovated.
Please be aware that during summer the inner castle is locked due to theatrical performance.
