S1 – Ep 333 – Adelaide – A Town Showing off its Clean Streets and Natural Beauty!

Our drive through Adelaide in the Eastern Cape revealed a town showing off its clean streets and and natural beauty. The charm of Adelaide lies in its well-preserved churches and old buildings, each telling a story of the town's rich history. The grand Dutch Reformed Church, reminiscent of a castle, stood as a magnificent centrepiece. As we explored further, we stumbled upon an abandoned station, a testament to a bygone era of bustling railway activity. The school buildings and the hospital serving the community added to the town's character, while the monument on Market Square stood as a proud symbol of remembrance. Adelaide's allure lies in its combination of picturesque architecture, a sense of nostalgia, and the vibrant community. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #adelaide

S1 – Ep 185 – Hofmeyr – A Pretty Town close to the Bamboes Mountains!

Hofmeyr is yet another pretty Eastern Cape Karoo town which we enjoyed visiting. This town is very close to the Bamboes Mountain Range and its original name was Maraisburg and later renamed after Jan Hofmeyr. While driving around we found the Anglo Boer War Memorial in the park as well as the Great Trek centenary celebratory pyramid which was in the same park in the centre of town. Then it was time for us to leave this beautiful town and find our accommodation at Waterlea-on-River Tented Cabins about 35km from Hofmeyr. What an amazing stay we had, on the river in a fancy tent! The next morning, we unfortunately had to leave for our next destination. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #hofmeyr #bamboes #mountains #karoo

South Africa Travel

South Africa Travel - If you want to travel in southern Africa then South Africa is a good place to start. While you can fly into any country in southern Africa, most flights will route through South Africa anyway. South Africa is also a good place to get used to travelling in the region (though some would argue that Namibia is better for that). Of course South Africa is not only a jumping off point, it is itself a superb destination rich in culture, fauna, flora and history.

Outsiders' views of South Africa are coloured by the same stereotypes as the rest of Africa. Contrary to popular belief, South Africa is not devastatingly poor with an unstable government. Although the rural part of South Africa remains among the poorest and the least developed parts of the world and poverty in the townships can be appalling, progress is being made. The process of recovering from apartheid, which lasted almost 46 years, is quite slow. In fact, South Africa's United Nations Human Development Index which was slowly improving in the final years of apartheid, has declined dramatically since 1996, largely due to the AIDS pandemic, and poverty levels appear to be on the increase. South Africa boasts a well-developed infrastructure and has all the modern amenities and technologies, much of it developed during the years of white minority rule. The government is stable, although corruption is common. The government and the primary political parties generally have a high level of respect for democratic institutions and human rights.

Driver's views : Hogsback Dikeni Fort Beaufort Adelaide Bedford Cookhouse KwaNojoli etc. Oudtshoorn

The Eastern Cape province was formed in 1994, incorporating areas from the former Xhosa homelands of the Transkei and Ciskei, together with what was previously part of the Cape Province. This resulted in several anomalies, including the fact that the Province has four supreme courts (in Makhanda (formerly named Grahamstown), Gqeberha (formerly named Port Elizabeth), Bhisho and Mthatha, and had enclaves of KwaZulu-Natal in the province. The latter anomaly has fallen away with amendments to municipal and provincial boundaries.

The Xhosa Kingdom was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Africa, and had all states in the Eastern Cape as tributaries. Any group, people, or tribe that recognised the Xhosa Kingdom as Paramouncy became Xhosa, practiced Xhosa culture and used isiXhosa as their main language. Some of the tribes that fall under the category of Xhosa people include: AmaMpondo, AbaThembu, AmaMpondomise, AmaHlubi, AmaBhaca, AmaXesibe, AmaBomvana and more.

The Karoo is a semi-desert natural region of South Africa. No exact definition of what constitutes the Karoo is available, so its extent is also not precisely defined. The Karoo is partly defined by its topography, geology and climate, and above all, its low rainfall, arid air, cloudless skies, and extremes of heat and cold. The Karoo also hosted a well-preserved ecosystem hundreds of million years ago which is now represented by many fossils.

The Karoo formed an almost impenetrable barrier to the interior from Cape Town, and the early adventurers, explorers, hunters, and travelers on the way to the Highveld unanimously denounced it as a frightening place of great heat, great frosts, great floods, and great droughts. Today, it is still a place of great heat and frosts, and an annual rainfall of between 50 and 250 mm, though on some of the mountains it can be 250 to 500 mm higher than on the plains. However, underground water is found throughout the Karoo, which can be tapped by boreholes, making permanent settlements and sheep farming possible.

The xerophytic vegetation consists of aloes, mesembryanthemums, crassulas, euphorbias, stapelias, and desert ephemerals, spaced 50 cm or more apart, and becoming very sparse going northwards into Bushmanland and, from there, into the Kalahari Desert.

Tierkloof Mountain Cottages, South Africa

I am always drawn to and enticed by accommodation that offers complete luxurious solitude. There’s something about the feeling that you’re in the middle of nowhere. No one to be seen for miles, only the sounds of birds, with the occasional squeak of a temperamental wild rabbit. At night the Milky Way lights up the sky, and as you soak in the wood fired hot tub or outdoor bath with a quaffable glass of red in hand, there’s nothing to do but stare in utter awe.

So much thought and meticulous care has been lovingly poured into the 3 cottages at Tierkloof (which might I add are very far apart from one another). Fully kitted out kitchens with fancy gadgets to boot; luxurious linen, couches and daybeds; indoor and outdoor fireplaces... even outdoor baths and showers. Hosts Elsa and Robin truly know how one should relax. And they ensure it!

Just a 2hr 20min trip from Cape Town, you have absolutely no excuse not to visit! Bring along your fur babies, and enjoy some well deserved downtime. The stars and sounds of silence await you...

Reconstruction Era National Historical Park, in Beaufort South Carolina

Across the street from the Beaufort Arsenal in downtown Beaufort SC is the (free) Reconstruction Era National Historic Park. Although the museum was closed on Sundays, there is information printed outdoors. We will have to plan a return trip to see the museum inside and to get our official National Parks Passport stamp (although we are saying the family picture at the end counts).

Come learn about the important Era of Reconstruction in America (1861-1900) and what the Second Founding of America looked like through the eyes of African-Americans who were given their freedom and citizenship from former slavery. The then-Lincoln Administration decided to initiate the ‘Port Royal Experiment’ in Beaufort County to help the former slaves become self-sufficient. (NPS website)

Driving from BEAUFORT WEST to Scarborough CAPE TOWN South Africa / The Most Scenic Route !!!

Driving from BEAUFORT WEST to Scarborough CAPE TOWN South Africa / The Most Scenic Route !!!

Beaufort West is a town in the Western Cape province in South Africa. It is the largest town in the arid Great Karoo region, and is known as the Capital of the Karoo.

Scarborough is a seaside town situated within the City of Cape Town on the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape province of South Africa, situated at the edge of the Cape Point Nature Reserve.

Scarborough is a conservation village and essentially a random scattering of houses and beach homes that lie embedded in the steep mountains of Slangkop and Red Hill, overlooking the thundering Atlantic waves. It is a nature-lover’s haven, seems miles from traffic jams and makes the crime of suburban living seem irrelevant.
