Amazing and beautiful giants dams and whales watching : Manic-5 and the extraordinary Côte-Nord.

#NorthShore #Manic5 #BaieComeau #Forestville #Escoumins #Whales.

In this new episode, we explore the North Shore region. A two-day journey that will allow you to discover the great cathedral of the north, the Manic-5 dam, the cities of Baie-Comeau and Forestville, and you will also have the opportunity to discover the whales of the St. Lawrence River with us.

0:00 Departure
0:55 Tadoussac - Manic-5 road
2:20 Stop at Manic-3
3:10 Visit of Manic-5
6:08 Some pictures of Manic-2
6:45 Overnight in Baie-Comeau
7:58 Destination Pointe-aux-Outardes and its beaches
8:55 Discovery of the Ragueneau wharf
9:35 The incomparable Bersimis River
10:10 Forestville
11:39 Portneuf-sur-Mer and its sandbank
13:13 Walk to Longue-Rive and loss of our drone
15:28 Whale watching cruise at Les Escoumins
17:38 Visit and lunch at Les Escoumins

First stage of our trip, the 200 kilometers separating Tadoussac from Baie-Comeau. It takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes for this trip, but like us, if you try the adventure, you may stop many times because the landscape is spectacular.

By taking route 389, you will cross several hydro-electric dams. First, you will see the Manic-2 dam. Stop before crossing the bridge in front of the dam to admire this imposing construction of Quebec engineering and enjoy the breathtaking landscape.

Next, you will come across the René-Lévesque power station, formerly known as Manic-3. Located nearly 75 km from the mouth of the Manicouagan River, the dam is 107 meters high. Commissioned in 1975, its head is 94 meters, which allows it, with its six turbines, to produce 1,244 mega watts.

Finally, at the end of some 215 kilometers of road, we visit the most impressive architectural work in Quebec, Manic-5, one of the main energy production sites in Quebec. Inaugurated in 1968, this building is named after former Quebec premier Daniel Johnson, who tragically died on the site the morning of its inauguration.

The dam is 1.3 kilometers long. With its 13 vaults and 14 buttresses, it is the largest dam of its kind in the world. The central arch is 165 meters high, the equivalent of the tower of the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

Historically, the construction of the Manic-5 power station and the Daniel-Johnson dam was part of the Quiet Revolution, a key period in the national affirmation of Quebecers.

Visits to the dam and the museum are free of charge and various departures are scheduled daily during the summer. It is however necessary to reserve your place rather quickly.

We completed our first day with a visit of Baie-Comeau. A walk in the Parc des Pionniers will allow you to stroll down to the river. The view is exceptional. It is clearly a must-see when visiting the city.

The next day, we made a few nice stops on our way, notably at Pointe-aux-Outardes, Portneuf-sur-mer, Forestville and Longue-Rive.

We complete this journey with a cruise on the sea to admire the whales. For several years, tourists from all over the world have been flocking to Tadoussac or Bergeronnes to discover the largest land mammals. For our part, we chose to leave from Les Escoumins aboard a zodiac.

We were lucky to see countless specimens, including a few humpback whales and fin whales, a whale that can measure up to 24 meters and weigh from 40 to 85 tons. It is the second largest whale in the world after the blue whale.

Just a short drive from Tadoussac, on the way to Labrador City, is the beautiful Parc de la Chute de Sault au Mouton.

The trails to the waterfall start at the Visitor Information center. From here it's a short 10-minute walk to the beach and suspension bridge, which offers the best view of the waterfall (Chute de Sault au Mouton).

While hiking around you can see the remains of a 19th-century sawmill and the Sault-au-Mouton Falls. The hiking trail with interpretive panels leads to a suspension bridge over the falls.

Useful information:
Frenchs Forest is a suburb of northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Frenchs Forest is 13 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. Frenchs Forest is part of Sydney's Northern Beaches region and also considered to be part of the Forest District, colloquially known as The Forest by its locals.
Prior to the arrival of the First Fleet in Port Jackson in 1788, the area of land we now know as Frenchs Forest, and surrounding Warringah areas, was the home of the Guringai (Ku-ring-gai) language group of the Garigal Aboriginal clan.
