Excelsior Springs came into existence due to the natural spring water that gushed forth from the depths of the earth. It was discovered by accident in 1880 by a farmer, Travis Mellion, when his daughter Opal fell ill with a form of tuberculosis. He asked for advice from nearby campers, and they suggested the spring that oozed from the bank of the Fishing River. Water was collected and brought to his daughter to drink. Over the course of a few weeks, there was a noticeable improvement to her health, and she was eventually cured. A log-cabin farmer, Frederick Kugler, also begin to treat his rheumatic knees and a recurring sore from a Civil War wound, and he was cured of his ailments shortly after.

This walk takes your through the historic downtown area, including views of the Elms Hotel (built-in 1912), the Hall of Waters (An Art Deco masterpiece built in 1934), and many other buildings. Along the way, you’ll see many Christmas decorations that will brighten your holidays.

Paranormal Mysteries of The Elms Hotel? | Excelsior Springs, Missouri (Night Tour)

Beyond its opulence and history, the Elms Hotel in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, has captivated the imagination of visitors and locals alike with stories of paranormal activity. As one of the most haunted hotels in the Midwest, the Elms Hotel boasts a rich tapestry of ghostly tales that have been passed down through generations, adding an extra layer of intrigue to its already enchanting allure.

The Ghosts of the Past:

As a hotel that has stood for over a century, the Elms has witnessed its fair share of joy, sorrow, and dramatic events. It is said that some spirits from the past continue to linger within its walls, creating an otherworldly ambiance that both intrigues and terrifies those who dare to venture into the unknown.

One of the most well-known apparitions at the Elms Hotel is the Blue Lady. She is said to be the ghost of a woman who tragically died in the hotel's swimming pool during the 1920s. Guests and staff have reported seeing a figure draped in a flowing blue dress gliding through the halls and disappearing into thin air. Her presence often brings a sense of calm and serenity, as if she is forever seeking peace in the afterlife.

Another prominent spirit is that of a young boy named Billy. Legend has it that Billy drowned in the hotel's pool many years ago, and his spirit continues to roam the premises. Visitors have recounted hearing the faint laughter of a child and witnessing objects move inexplicably, seemingly guided by an unseen force.

Haunted Hotspots:

Several areas within the Elms Hotel are considered hotspots for paranormal activity. The infamous Room 314 has earned a reputation as one of the most haunted rooms in the entire hotel. Guests who have stayed in this room have reported unexplained phenomena, such as lights flickering, doors opening and closing on their own, and even the feeling of an unseen presence watching over them as they sleep.

The pool area is also believed to be a focal point of ghostly encounters. Some guests have claimed to feel a cold breeze or the sensation of being touched while swimming, even when no one else is around. Others have seen ghostly figures reflected in the water or heard disembodied voices echoing through the pool area.

Due to its reputation as a haunted hotel, the Elms has attracted paranormal enthusiasts and investigators from all over the country. Numerous ghost hunting teams have conducted investigations in an attempt to capture evidence of the hotel's otherworldly inhabitants. These investigations often involve the use of various equipment, such as EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) recorders, infrared cameras, and electromagnetic field detectors.

Some investigators claim to have recorded mysterious voices and unexplained sounds during their visits, providing potential evidence of the hotel's ghostly residents. However, skeptics argue that these findings could be attributed to various natural or environmental factors, and the debate about the paranormal nature of the Elms Hotel continues to intrigue believers and non-believers alike.

Rather than shying away from its haunted reputation, the Elms Hotel embraces its paranormal charm. The hotel offers special ghost tours and themed events that allow guests to delve into the history and folklore of its haunted past. These tours take visitors to the most active areas and recount the eerie stories associated with each location, leaving them with a thrilling experience they won't soon forget.

The Elms Hotel in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, is not merely a luxurious historic retreat; it is a place where history and the paranormal converge. The stories of ghostly encounters, residual energies, and haunted spaces have etched a layer of intrigue that sets the Elms apart from other grand hotels. Whether a skeptic or a believer, those who step foot within the Elms' hallowed halls are likely to feel an inexplicable energy, reminding them that the past is not so easily forgotten, and the mysteries of the paranormal continue to spark wonder and curiosity among those who seek to explore its enigmatic charm.
