10 best places to visit in Dominican Republic | Travel guide
The Dominican Republic, located on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, is a popular travel destination known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history. Famous for all-inclusive resorts, Punta Cana is the most visited region, offering crystal-clear waters and white sand beaches. The country is also home to the historic capital, Santo Domingo, with its Colonial Zone recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. For nature lovers, there are lush rainforests, the towering Pico Duarte, and beautiful waterfalls like Damajagua.
When planning your visit, it’s important to know that the Dominican Republic enjoys a tropical climate, with warm temperatures year-round. The high season, from December to April, is the best time to visit, offering sunny days and little rain. However, this is also the busiest time, so it’s ideal to book in advance. The off-season, from May to November, tends to be less crowded but can bring occasional rain and the possibility of hurricanes, especially from August to October.
Top attractions include the beautiful beaches of Punta Cana, the historical Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, the picturesque Lake Enriquillo, and the adventure-filled Damajagua Waterfalls. For nature lovers, hiking Pico Duarte or exploring the country's many national parks, like Los Haitises, offers a unique experience. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, the Dominican Republic has something for everyone.

8 MUST SEE DESTINATIONS in Dominican REPUBLIC 🇩🇴.
8 must see destinations in Dominican Republic. The southwest of the Dominican Republic is by far one of most beautiful regions in the whole country and it's still to this day the less explored side of the island due to how remote it is. Famous for its sandy beaches, crystalline waters, salty lakes, iguanas and breathtaking landscapes that will awake the inner explorer in any traveler.
There are so many attractions to choose from and I'm sure I miss a few myself but these are just the ones I was fortunate enough to visit with my family last November and feel that anyone that goes to the south has to see them.
To enjoy this trip I recommend to take about 3 to 5 days to really discover, enjoy and explore the many attractions the region has to offer.
Barahona and Pedernales are the most famous cities within the south regions and both have incredible attractions from beaches, lakes, dry forests, salty rivers, you get the idea.
Here's the 8 destinations You can't MISS in Dominican Republic:
Dunas de Baní (Dunes of Baní): Our small desert with a combination of dunes of sand between the road and the ocean. Its a national park that cost 100 pesos (about $2 US Dollars) to enter. They are located in Las Calderas Peninsula, between the cities of Matanzas, Las Calderas and Las Salinas, in the Dominican Province of Peravia.
How to get there:
Lago Enriquillo (Lake Enriquillo) is the biggest hypersaline lake in the Dominican Republic and in the Caribbean. Its waters are shared between the provinces of Bahoruco and Independencia, the latter of which borders Haiti. The lake is 40 meters below sea level. The area is hot and dry, although springs and small rivers make it very fertile in places. You can take a boat from the lake to visit Isla Cabritos which the only small island within the lake. You may see The American crocodile in its wild state floating above the salty water.
How to get there:
Parque Eólico Los Cocos (Coconut Wind Park) rises about a 40-story building, it is almost impossible to comprehend the magnitude of these wind turbines until you drive very close on the Pedernales highway. Los Cocos Wind Park is not only the largest in the Caribbean and Central America, but it is also the first in the Dominican Republic connected to the national grid. A total spectacle from driving from Barahona to Pedernales. One of the highlights of any trip to the south.
How to get there:
Playa San Rafael (San Rafael Beach) is located in Barahona province, on Barahona - Enriquillo Road. It is one of the most visited beaches in the south region of the Dominican Republic. Famous for being connected to a river where the fresh water mixes with the salty one which makes it very attractive for tourists and locals.
The beach has strong waves and current so I wouldn't recommend swimming beyond the shoreline if you're not a strong swimmer.
How to get there:
Playa Los Patos (Duck's Beach) is connected to Los Patos River which is the shortest river in the county and one of the busiest destinations in the south of the Dominican Republic. In its origins there were many ducks there and that's why it got the name. While the beach is gorgeous it's mostly used to surf since the current and waves are strong. The river water is cold and very relaxing. This spot is a most to stop by.
How to get there:
Pozos De Romeo (Romeo's Wells) is on the very road that leads to Bahia de las Águilas beach. Many tourist like to stop here on the way to or back to swim and fresh up . Los Pozos de Romeo is a crystal clear natural pool enclosed within rocks and cacti fauna.
How to get there:
Laguna De Oviedo (Oviedo's Lagoon) is 3 times saltier than the ocean and is located in the Jaragua National Park in Pedernales. Home to Iguanas, Flamingos and many other species. The surface is characterized by a milky appearance due to the concentration of minerals and plant and marine waste, the remains of algae and molluscs present in the bottom. You can take a boat tour that varies from 1 hour to 2.5 hours around the lake.
How to get there:
Bahia De Las Águilas is simply the most beautiful beach in the country. The crown jewel of the and still mostly untouched in many areas. You can see my video about it here

Balneario “LAS MARIAS”, Neyba, República Dominicana
Balneario Las Marías is an oasis of freshness located in Neyba. It is located in a desert area, which shows the balance and perfection of mother nature, since in its cold and crystalline waters the locals and tourists can refresh their bodies with these imposing springs.
Spa the Marias
On Bahoruco province, is a natural oasis called Las Marias. It is a calm waters Spa, cold and very refreshing, located on the road from Neyba, City capital of this province. It is a place which contrasts completely with the environment, because this is a city characterized by its dry and desert environment.
Las Marías is one of its main streams and along the rivers Panzo, Don Juan and the sleeve. Its waters irrigate the land so that agricultural activity in the area is possible, which has diminished considerably in recent times due to the decrease of their causes or the disappearance of some, as they are: The fig tree and the Llantica (Breaker Entourage, Large cachón).
In addition to Las Marias, Bahoruco province stands out for being the only place in the Dominican Republic where the cultivation of grapes is possible. According to the history dates back to the time of the colony from Cristóbal Colon's second trip to the island of Hispaniola. However, was in 1938 When the first efforts were made to develop the culture and industrialize it introducing varieties such as: Aramon, Malaga, Cabernet, among others.
Las Marías is a refreshing experience in the heart of the Deep South. This spa with pure and crystalline waters is the prelude to a journey marked by natural contrasts, This route is known as Vuelta al Lake Enriquillo.
As a tourist destination it is very active when receiving countless tourists, seeking to appreciate the best of the Deep South, beginning such a daring adventure in the crystalline waters that are born from the very depths of the land of the grape, Neiba.
In the vicinity of the spa you can find some small restaurants that serve typical dishes or based on seafood..
Hosting is always an issue that generates discrepancies, since large hotel structures have not been developed in the south, but this does not mean that comfortable accommodation cannot be found, in the end what counts is the adventure and adrenaline of entering a totally unknown trip where the tourist attractions par excellence will leave you sighing for more than one occasion.
Balneario Las Marias, Neyba, Bahoruco
Las Marías, also known as just “Marías Spa”, is the most visited spa by the local people of Neyba Town. It has an extension of 624 square kilometres and a depth that ranges from 0.5 to 4.5 metres.
Its crystalline waters are provided by a natural freshwater fountain and they are very appreciated both by the inhabitants of the region and by foreign tourists, who love to refresh into these cool waters and enjoy the welcoming and familiar atmosphere that reigns in the spa. Its precious surroundings covered with tropical, green vegetation are also very appreciated.
There is a bar where you can try the local cuisine and also snack stands where you can taste tilapia, a typical fish from the local cuisine.
I am a Realtor now living in Sosúa, Dominican Republic. These are some of my travels around the cities on the North Coast and some hot properties for sale around the Dominican Republic. I escaped from Canada before the travel restrictions came in. We have the connections to help you do the same, if you're looking to relocate and experience true freedom and the love of your fellow humans.
Dominican Republic is a stable and increasingly valuable real estate market. Short term rentals can be very lucrative here with great ROIs and monthly cash returns. You'll initially need to get over sticker shock, if you are from North America, as prices seem very low to the untrained eye. I have been in organized real estate in Canada for over 30 years and have a good eye for value, strong connections to local inventory, negotiation skills and deal with the highest of integrity. I have coached agents and sellers for decades on the advantage of using higher initial listing or Co-Op commissions to sell real estate for better prices and higher nets. Largo Enriquillo, Los Rios, Dominican Republic
Lake Enriquillo (Spanish: Lago Enriquillo) is a lake in the Dominican Republic and is the largest lake and lowest point in the Caribbean and the lowest point on any ocean island.[1] It is one of only a few saltwater lakes in the world inhabited by crocodiles. Lake Enriquillo is located in a rift valley formed by the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault that extends 79 miles (127 km) from Port-au-Prince Bay in Haiti in the west, to near Neiba Bay in the Dominican Republic in the east. This fault was responsible for the catastrophic 2010 Haiti earthquake.
The rift valley is a former marine strait, and was created around 1 million years ago when the water level fell and the strait was filled in by sediments of the Yaque del Sur River. The lake is 9 to 12 miles (15 to 20 km) wide. Known as the Cul-de-Sac Depression in Haiti and the Hoya de Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic, parts of the rift valley are below sea level and are covered by large salt lakes.
Lake Enriquillo covers an area of 102 square miles (265 km²) and is the lowest point in the Caribbean falling 129 feet (39 m) below sea level. Its drainage basin includes 10 minor river systems. The rivers that rise in the Neiba Mountains to the north (lower center and lower right of the image) are perennial. Those rivers that rise in the Baoruco Mountains to the south (upper center and upper left of the image) are intermittent.
Lake Enriquillo has no outlet. The lake's water level varies because of a combination of storm-driven precipitation events and the region's high evaporation rate. Salinity in the lake can vary between 33 ppt to over 100 ppt. Tremors in the region are common. Just above the right center of the image, the other large salt lake in the rift valley, Etang Saumâtre located in the country of Haiti, is visible.
The lake contains 3 islands: Isla Barbarita, Islita, and Isla Cabritos. The last one is the largest of all and contains a National Park famous for its crocodiles and flamingos. When water levels drop as a result of dry spells, the islands are usually linked to each other by sandbars.
The region has a hot, semiarid climate with an average annual rainfall of about 24 inches. Plants that thrive in arid places, like the cactus, can be found here.

10 Best Places in Dominican Rep. by Global Travel Corp. USA BOOK: https://gtcusa.globaltravel.com
Welcome to Dominican Republic
There's far more to the Dominican Republic than sandy beaches and rum bars, as the country also boasts a diverse array of natural landscapes, with scenery that swings between fertile farmland, forest-shrouded waterfalls, and majestic mountains. Punta Cana, the country's easternmost tip, entices travelers with idyllic beaches and luxury resorts. It's also an ideal jumping-off point for a handful of adventurous day trips, and active travelers will love the variety of recreation-based tours available. Explore off-road terrain in a dune buggy, take a catamaran cruise to Saona Island, go for a swim at El Limón Waterfall, or careen through the treetops on one of the longest ziplining circuits in the Caribbean. Tours to Catalina Island, where you can snorkel above a pristine coral reef, depart from Punta Cana, too. The island capital of Santo Domingo, home to a colonial Old Town that's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just two hours from Punta Cana. Sightseeing tours that include transportation allow visitors to hit many of its top attractions such as Calle de las Damas, Columbus Lighthouse, and Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor (Catedral Primada de América) in one day. Santo Domingo is also a logical gateway to Lago Enriquillo and Isla Cabritos National Park (inhabited by crocodiles, flamingos, and iguanas), and tours that combine both mean you don't have to choose between them.
