BOWU - Amazing and Calm Natural Lake in Ende, Flores Island - Indonesia
If you drive from Maumere to the west via the north coast route, you will definitely pass through Kota Baru District. Located ± 34 kilometers west of Maumere, Lake Bowu which is in Kota Baru District, Ende Regency is 500 meters from the State Road. There is a signboard at the crossroads that guides visitors. The lake which has a length of 772.2 meters and a circumference of 1980.2 meters has a depth of 2.5 meters where the coast is filled with elephant grass plants up to two meters high. The lush Reo trees (kedondong forest) on the edge of the lake make this lake cool in the heat of the sun that stings the skin. In the middle of the lake there are three separate mounds like islands which are also overgrown with elephant grass and other plants with a length of 3 to 5 meters. There is no shelter other than a tree. If seen, this lake may have once been land.

Indonesia is a massive country, so much so that I have created at least 3 travel videos about the country and I have yet to step foot on Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and a few thousands more. It’s amazing how I diverse the country is and how they are so unique from one another. There is so much to see in Indonesia and here is my attempt at showing another part of Indonesia I have not done before.
Today, I will take you to Bali, Lombok, Flores and explore the unique culture, breathtaking landscapes, the wonderful people of Nusa Tenggara.
Nusantara (means Archipelago in Bahasa), a collection of travel moments I captured during my 2 weeks trip through Bali, Lombok, and Flores. Bali and Lombok are pretty well-traveled but what blew me away was how beautiful Flores is. The number of wildlife you can encounter there is astounding.
What do you know about Flores? You may know about the Komodo Dragons and the islands they live on but there isn’t as many videos of Flores, the island where you actually have to go to see the Komodo Dragons.
For my trip, I had a chance to spend 10 days on Flores, starting from Labuan Bajo. I got on a boat and spent the first 2 days cruising around the Komodo National Park, visiting the Komodo Island, Rinca island, where you can actually see more Komodo dragons than the one it is named after, and Padar island, the best sunrise spot you can see.
During the live-aboard experience, all of us on the boat had a chance to bond, while exploring and learning about the Komodo dragons. In between, we went snorkeling and swam with Manta Ray, my first time ever, see them in its habitat. There are a ton of things to do around the Komodo National Park, especially if you are into diving and snorkeling.
After 2 days exploring the Komodo Islands, I flew inland into Ende, a town on the eastern part of Flores and traveled on land back west to see what Flores has to offer other than the Komodo Islands.
As it turned out, Flores is so much more than what it is known for. Throughout my 10 days in Flores, I went up to Kelimutu, a tri-colored volcanic lake in Moni, explored Bena traditional village in Bajawa and spent the rest of my time, riding a scooter around Ruteng and hung out with the enthusiastic locals of Flores.

Flores is the most fascinating and beautiful island. Long hidden in the shadows of its more famous neighbor Bali, the island of Flores is finally emerging as a unique destination of its own. So, after visiting the lair of the Komodo dragons, take time to marvel at some of the wonders of Flores. Here you can swim in pristine lakes and waterfalls, dive at one of the 50 spectacular dive sites, go kayaking among craggy coasts and mangrove shores, explore mysterious caves and be warmly welcomed by the island’s people in their rituals, dances and daily life. Flores spells adventure, diving, eco-tours, and mountain climbing interspersed with visits to prehistoric heritage sites, traditional villages and cultural events. Until recently, many tourists have only been familiar with Labuan Bajo, the small port located on the western-most tip of the island, and the taking off point for a visit to the last natural habitat of the prehistoric Komodo dragons, the islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar. Situated in the province of East Nusatenggara, Flores is a long island that contains some of the world’s best kept secrets. A chain of volcanoes stretches the length of this 450 km long and narrow island, creating complicated V-shaped valleys and knife-edged ridges - terrain that was near impenetrable until recently and has separated the island into many distinct ethnic groups. Administratively the island is divided into 8 districts; West Manggarai, Manggarai, East Manggarai, Nagekeo, Ngada, Ende, Sika and East Flores. A night or two at Labuan Bajo completes a trip to the Komodo Island. This charming seaside town has beautiful sunset views and a surprising cosmopolitan food scene that you should not miss. The area of Labuan Bajo and the Komodo Islands is only one little corner of Flores. There are a lot of awesome adventures waiting farther afield.
How to go — Labuan Bajo is 1.5 hours east of Bali by plane. Komodo Airport is the main airport that serves Labuan Bajo and this side of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara Province. The drive to the town center usually takes 20 minutes or less. You can also fly direct from Jakarta. Travel time takes 2.5 hours. Bali-Labuan Bajo flights are operated by Garuda Indonesia, Wings Air, Kal Star & Lion Air. Meanwhile, the Jakarta-Labuan Bajo route is operated only by Garuda Indonesia.
Where to go + what to do
• See the sunset overlooking the bay, from Paradise Bar. • Eat your way around the town local and foreign restaurants. • Visit island, mountain and cultural sights near Maumere, Ende, and Ruteng. • Watch the sun rise over the multicolored lakes at Kelimutu Volcano. • Attend a traditional Caci “fight” dance. • Experience a traditional Manggarai village and go on a trek to Wae Rebo. • Catch a flight to Kupang located near the Indonesia-Timor Leste border.
2. Batam
How to go — Batam Island is a mere 1-hour ferry south of Singapore. You can also fly to Batam Airport from a wide selection of airports in Indonesia. Batam-Hang Nadim International Airport serves from Jakarta (1.5 hours), Medan (2 hours), Bali(2.5 hours), Surabaya (2 hours). And, other domestic airports including Padang (1.5 hours), Banda Aceh (2 hours), Jambi (1 hour), Palembang (1.5 hours), Solo (2 hours), Semarang (2 hours), Pontianak (1 hours, 45 minutes) or Pekanbaru (1 hour).
