A video where I talk about the Hurstbridge line for 40 minutes!
Melbourne's Hurstbridge line is a 38km suburban railway line, running from the city out to the scenic Diamond Valley in the north-east suburbs. The line is 1600mm Broad Gauge and electrified at 1500v DC. In the video I talk through the line's many interesting features from the city out to the terminus. All photographs and video are taken by Martin Bennet (that's me), I also do the writing, narration, and diagrams. The only content in this video not made by me are a couple of scans from the 1927 Victorian Railways 'Curves and Grades' book, one from the 1945 VR passenger network map, and the google maps screenshots.

At the end of the video I mention you can travel on this line by steam train during the Hurstbridge Wattle Festival, usually in August or September. You can check here for details of the next one:
For a full length diagram on the line and more details on historical dates etc, visit the Vicsig line guide page here:
My voiceover in this video was recorded with the assistance of my brother Cian, who happens to be a sound recordist and musician. Check out his music here:

Montsalvat - Places to visit in Melbourne
TheITMommy visited Montsalvat in Eltham, Melbourne. Montsalvat’s artist-founder, Justus Jörgensen, took his inspiration from the villages of France, but the Montsalvat he built with artist friends and families, notably the prodigiously talented Skipper family, is fashioned out of the clay and stone of this beautiful Eltham hillside, and pieced together with many remnants of Australia’s architectural heritage. Look through the larger bay window in the Upper Gallery and you might learn that it once graced the Victorian Insurance Building. Lean against the great wooden uprights in the Barn Gallery and you will be told they were once wharf timbers from Wollongong.

Visiting the town of Eltham in NSW with our new caravan and staying off grid at Eltham Station.
The village of Eltham is nestled in a lush & picturesque valley just a kilometre or two off the Lismore to Bangalow Road. The big old pub and Bangalow were well worth the visit. This is also our first time using our new Caravan off grid.

Public Transport Fares In Victoria // The Free Tram Zone
This video explains the logic behind public transport fares in Melbourne, and more broadly across the whole state of Victoria: How the fares are calculated, why some journeys are much better value than others, and what incentives exist to encourage travel at certain times. Also, the Free Tram Zone, and why most experts agree it isn't actually a good idea. Please note this video isn't meant to be a resource about how much specific fares cost, just the logic of why certain trips are charged in certain ways, and fares have changed since this video was made. World FAMOUS Puffing Billy Steam Railway Melbourne
The world famous PUFFING BILLY has a place in every young Australian who has lived in or visited the Melbourne area. It has been a tourist train for more than 50 years and is popular for young families and school children - BUT - it is far more than that and well worth a visit no matter how old you are. The train is located in the Dandenong Ranges, about 40 minutes from the center of Melbourne. A round trip will take about 4 hours.

Puffing Billy: A Steaming Icon of Railway Heritage
Puffing Billy, a historic steam-powered locomotive, stands as an iconic symbol of railway heritage, captivating the hearts of enthusiasts and visitors alike. Operating in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne, Australia, Puffing Billy is not just a mode of transportation but a living testament to the golden era of steam locomotion.
Built in 1899, Puffing Billy was initially constructed to serve the needs of the local communities by transporting goods and passengers through the challenging terrain of the Dandenong Ranges. The train's unique name derives from its distinct chuffing sound as it traverses the scenic route, making its way through lush forests, meandering rivers, and charming townships. Over the years, Puffing Billy has evolved from a functional workhorse into a beloved tourist attraction, offering passengers a nostalgic journey back in time.
One of the most captivating features of Puffing Billy is its narrow-gauge track, measuring just 2 feet 6 inches (762 mm) wide. This compact gauge enables the train to navigate tight curves and steep gradients, a necessary adaptation for the rugged landscape it traverses. The railway line stretches for 25 kilometers, encompassing a breathtaking panorama of Australian flora and fauna, all while exuding an old-world charm.
Puffing Billy's operations are a symphony of vintage machinery and human dedication. Passengers are treated not just to a train ride, but to an immersive experience of yesteryears. The authentic carriages, some dating back to the early 1900s, provide a window into the past, where the clanking of wheels and the hiss of steam create an ambiance of nostalgia. Skilled volunteers, passionate about preserving the heritage, meticulously maintain and operate the train, ensuring that its journey through time continues to captivate generations.
In an era dominated by high-speed trains and modern transportation, Puffing Billy stands as a bridge between the past and the present. Its allure lies not only in the scenic beauty it unveils but in the preservation of an industrial heritage that defined an era. Visitors, whether they be railway enthusiasts or families seeking a unique adventure, can relive the magic of steam travel, a reminder of the progress that has shaped the modern world.
Puffing Billy has transcended its utilitarian origins to become an emblem of Australia's railway history. Its continued operation and popularity as a tourist attraction underscore the timeless fascination with steam power and the vital importance of preserving tangible connections to our industrial past. As the locomotive's haunting chuffs reverberate through the Dandenong Ranges, Puffing Billy remains a living testament to innovation, engineering prowess, and the enduring allure of train travel.
