Montsalvat - Places to visit in Melbourne
TheITMommy visited Montsalvat in Eltham, Melbourne. Montsalvat’s artist-founder, Justus Jörgensen, took his inspiration from the villages of France, but the Montsalvat he built with artist friends and families, notably the prodigiously talented Skipper family, is fashioned out of the clay and stone of this beautiful Eltham hillside, and pieced together with many remnants of Australia’s architectural heritage. Look through the larger bay window in the Upper Gallery and you might learn that it once graced the Victorian Insurance Building. Lean against the great wooden uprights in the Barn Gallery and you will be told they were once wharf timbers from Wollongong. Montsalvat Eltham

The World's Most Famous Picnic Spot
Welcome to the Macedon Ranges, home to one of the world's most famous picnic spots - Hanging Rock.
Rumoured to have been the haunt of bushranger 'Mad Dog' Morgan, this small extinct volcano (or mamelon) was formed by an upheaval of lava millions of years ago. It was made famous by the classic Australian novel and later movie Picnic at Hanging Rock, the mythic tale of the Valentine's Day disappearance of a group of schoolgirls and their teacher while visiting Hanging Rock in 1901. The legend endures, and an air of mystery and intrigue still lingers.
The mound of massive granite tors is riddled with caves, tunnels and overhanging boulders, its shapes and acoustic echoes enhancing its already spooky reputation making it an ideal hiking destination with the views from the top well worth the walk.
Surrounded by breath-taking natural scenery, expansive forests and heritage gardens, the Macedon Ranges regions has the sights, sounds, smells and tastes to satisfy every sense - and best of fall, it's only an hour from Melbourne.
Nestled among the rolling hills of the surrounding region is a treasure trove of some of regional Victoria's best food and wine.

--------------- BURKES LOOKOUT The views over Melbourne and the Bay from Burke’s Lookout in the Dandenong Ranges are gorgeous, it is a top viewpoint Mt Dandenong, but it does involve a short walk or even a long walk if you choose to take your time and spend a day in the Dandenongs exploring some beautiful walking tracks. The other nearby viewpoint to visit is Skyhigh, Mt Dandenong.
The area at Burkes Lookout is not set up for groups, no seats, picnic tables, or even a flat area to sit, visitors need to walk along Kyeema Track to reach the best viewpoint. To make your visit into a good hike in the Dandenongs, read about how to get here via the Fire Trail / Glasgow Track, the steepest and hardest climb in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. -------------- THE DANDENONG RANGES The Dandenong Ranges (commonly just The Dandenongs) are a set of low mountain ranges in Victoria, Australia, approximately 35 km (22 mi) east of the state capital Melbourne. A minor branch of the Great Dividing Range, the Dandenongs consist mostly of rolling hills, rising to 633 m (2,077 ft) at Mount Dandenong, as well as steeply weathered valleys and gullies covered in thick temperate rainforest, predominantly of tall mountain ash trees and dense ferny undergrowth. The namesake Dandenong Creek and most of its left-bank tributaries (particularly the Eumemmerring Creek) originate from headwaters in these mountain ranges. Two of Melbourne's most important storage reservoirs, the Cardinia and Silvan Reservoir, are also located within the Dandenongs.
After European settlement in the Port Phillip Bay region, the range was used as a major local source of timber for Melbourne. The ranges were popular with day-trippers from the 1870s onwards. Much of the Dandenongs were protected as parklands as early as 1882, and by 1987 these parklands were amalgamated to form the Dandenong Ranges National Park, which was subsequently expanded in 1997. The range receives light to moderate snowfalls a few times in most years, frequently between late winter and late spring. ----------------------------------------------- #australia #australia4k #australia2023 #melbourne #walkingtour #citytour #exploreaustralia #victoria #parks #wildlife #travel #travelling #botanicalgarden #lake #beach #ocean #marina #morningtonpeninsula #gardens #lookout #views #melbourne #australia #melbournecity #melbourneaustralia #visitmelbourne #travelmelbourne #CityofMelbourne #CityWalk #MelbourneStreetWalk #MelbourneVirtualTour #MelbourneWalkingTour #StreetsOfMelbourne #MelbourneEvent #Melbourne #Australia #MelbourneCity #MelbourneAustralia #VisitMelbourne #TravelMelbourne #soundsofmelbourne #melbournelaneway #melbournestreetart #MelbourneStreetFood #queenvictoriamarket #MelbourneCBD #MelbourneMarket #MelbourneStreetTour #whatsonmelbourne #dandenongranges #mountains #drive #drivingvideo #drivingvideos #driving #highway #road #car #truck #trip #botanicalgarden #botanicgarden #relaxing #nature #melbourneaustralia #australian #scenic #scenery #albertpark #lake #melbourneaustralia #melbourneaustralia #australia #cityview #city #walkingtour #walkthrough #walkaround #bar #yarrariver #canoeing #shopping #busy #beautiful #views #travelling #holiday #mustvisit #4k #cinematic #virtualtour #scenery #sightseeing #walking #relaxing #beautifuldestinations
Puffing Billy tour from Melbourne
The beautiful garden state of Victoria has many unique natural attractions. Among the very best are the Blue Dandenongs – a series of rolling hills, 35km east of Melbourne. Resplendent with tall groves of Mountain Ash, temperate rainforest and fern gullies covering the mountain floor, the Dandenongs are a cool and restful place. The dense rainforest has two beautiful waterfalls and a number of summits with stunning panoramas, and is home to many native birds and animals. With a number of B&Bs, coffee shops and antique stores, it is no surprise that the Blue Dandenongs remains such a popular place to visit.

Eltham Victoria Australia Slideshow
Eltham is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 20 km north-east of the Central Business District located within the Shire of Nillumbik local government area. Eltham recorded a population of 18,847 at the 2021 census.
Eltham is one of the 'green wedge' areas that provide relatively undeveloped, accessible environments within the Melbourne suburban region. These green wedge areas are under constant pressure from developments such as road and freeway expansions, but Eltham has managed to retain many tree-lined streets and leafy reserves. However, the character of the suburb is changing rapidly, with increased road traffic and higher-density housing becoming more common.
Eltham's tourist attractions include the artists colony Montsalvat and the Diamond Valley Railway, the largest ridable miniature railway in Australia.

The Eltham railway station, train siding and wooden trestle bridge.
The timber trestle rail bridge at Eltham is historically, scientifically, aesthetically and socially significant at State level. Mainly of timber-pier and timber-beam construction, but varied by a few longer steel-joists spans on timber piers at the main stream channel, this substantial bridge has almost two hundred metres of timber deck.
Built in 1902, it is the only railway bridge of predominantly timber construction that is still in regular use as an integral part of Melbourne's metropolitan electric railway network and one of extremely few timber rail bridges in the State that still carry trains.
Apart from its important continuing social function as a carrier of rail transport for the Hurstbridge line, this impressive bridge and its beautiful parkland surrounds contribute much to the character of Eltham township and that town's special reputation as an historic centre of environmental and conservation concerns. Location Panther Place, ELTHAM VIC 3095 B4173 Eltham Rail Bridge (Heritage listed - National Trust)
