Banos Travel Guide - Exploring beautiful Ecuador
Baños (de Agua Santa) is a small city in the Andean highlands of Ecuador under the smoke of volcano Tungurahua. Its name, which is Spanish for Baths (of sacred water), comes from the famous hydrothermal springs in the area. It's equally popular with foreigners as with Ecuadorians, and is known as the adventure capital of Ecuador. The streets are lined with hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, and tour agents. Although it is very touristy, lots of people love it, more for the activities and surroundings than for the city itself. It's an important hub for outdoor sports and jungle tours.
Getting around is easy, just walk. Nowhere is more than a 15 minute walk from where you start and usually even less. It is relatively flat in the city centre. Also check out the mountain biking section should you wish to explore further afield. There are also plenty of taxis around should you need one. Baños is known as the Gateway to the Amazon, as it is the last city still located in the mountain region before reaching the jungle and other towns that are located in the Amazon River basin.
Baños is located at an elevation of 1,820 metres (5,971 feet) on the northern foothills of the Tungurahua volcano, whose activity has been characterized by frequent powerful ash explosions and lava flows that can be seen from Banos. The city is also a Roman Catholic religious center, as some Catholic believers say that the Virgin Mary appeared nearby a waterfall. Due to this belief, a sculpture of the virgin, called Virgen de Agua Santa, was placed in the city's cathedral.
Along with the town Pillaro, Baños is known as a good starting point for exploring the remote Llanganates National Park and its attractions including Cerro Hermoso. The city itself has a main central park across from the cathedral. Nearby waterfalls include Virgen de Agua Santa, Inés María, Agoyán, El Manto de la Novia, Pailón del Diablo and Machay.
Baños is a popular tourist destination in Ecuador due to its natural environment (it is home to more than 60 waterfalls) and its adventure sports. Locals and visitors alike undertake rafting, kayaking, canyoning, bridge jumping, hiking, biking and horseback riding. Under the Köppen climate classification, Baños has a subtropical highland climate.
La Casa Del Arbol Hailed as the Swing at the End of the World this awesome and cheap ($1pp) activity will have you sitting on a plank of wood as you sail out over the edge of a steep hill. Reachable by a 3 hour hike from Banos. There is a bigger swing called El Vuelo Del Condor. You will be strapped in a metal half-box and overlooking the city. You can go there from La Casa Del Arbol either by a bus or walk. It is very breathtaking and should be done in 5 mins. They charge you around $10 for the swing and another $5 if you want pictures.
Baños is not just well-known for it's adventures, but also for Healing and Health. A newly open Ayurvedic clinic - Bioethika Center for Healing is offering all kinds of natural Ayurvedic treatments including the special Ayurvedic massages, located at Luis A. Martinez and Thomas Haflants, just next to the Libreria Cafe. There are many studios in the centro or hostals, within 50m of each other on the same street. They all cost around $20/hour but are mostly local women without full training. The nicer spa locations around town cost $35/hour.

Las actividades que se pueden hacer en Patate incluyen caminatas hacia cascadas, como la cascada de Mundug, visitas a huertos, sendirismo en el paramo, vistas culturales y actividades de realax y descanzo en piscinas y miradores expectaculares.
Además la ubicacion de Patate es muy apropiada ya que se encuentra a pocos minutos de las ciudades de Baños Puyo y Ambato.

10. Bali, Indonesia. La isla se encuentra rodeada por arrecifes de coral. Las playas en el sur son de arena blanca mientras que las del norte son de arena negra.
9. Las Dalmacias, Croacia. Es una isla de piedra caliza que esconde plácidas playas de arena, la mayoría con buen acceso. En Hvar hay mucho que hacer, sus aguas cristalinas hacen las delicias de los amantes del submarinismo, realizar esta actividad es todo un lujo en el Archipiélago de las Islas Pakleni.
8. Ischia, Italia. Ubicado en el Golfo de Nápoles, Ischia es una isla volcánica conocida por sus numerosos establecimientos termales. La isla italiana de Ischia formada tras erupciones volcánicas.
7. Kauai, Hawaii. Conocida también como la “Isla Jardín” debido a su geografía montañosa, llena de hermosos campos de vegetación, espectaculares valles que deslumbran, cañones súper extensos y grandiosas cascadas.
6. Maui, Hawaii. Es la segunda más grande del archipiélago y la segunda más famosa detrás de Oahu, donde está la capital del estado: Honolulu. Usualmente es llamada “la isla mágica” por la variedad de atracciones y paisajes que ofrece a los turistas y también la “la isla del valle” porque está llena de valles.
5. Santorini, Grecia. Santorini es un prodigio geológico en medio del mar. La isla es el cono de un volcán hundido tras una erupción. Con forma semicircular, un acantilado de 18 kilómetros de longitud rodea lo que era la antigua caldera.
4. Islas Galápagos, Ecuador. La abundante fauna, tanto marina como terrestre, atrae al turismo ecológico a las ecuatorianas islas Galápagos.
3. Isla de Boracay, Filipinas. Su popularidad se debe a la transparencia de sus aguas y la finísima arena de su playa principal, considerada como una de las mejores del mundo.
2. Hilton Head, Carolina del Sur. Hilton Head Island y la región circundante conocida como el Lowcountry de Carolina del Sur ofrece un paisaje impresionante. El mar, la arena y el cielo te rodean y te dan la bienvenida a prístinas playas, pantanos y humedales de agua dulce y salada, las copas de los robles cubiertas de musgo español y la hospitalidad sureña.
1. Palawan, Filipinas. Palawan es una gran isla, la quinta en extensión de Filipinas, pero es también el nombre de la provincia más grande del país, con 1.768 islas e islotes rodeados de corales. Las formaciones de caliza, dominando las aguas azul turquesa de pequeñas playas de arena blanca y horadadas por pequeñas lagunas, crean mundos tan mágicos como el de la Secret Beach de Matinloc, a la que se solo se accede tras bucear por un agujero entre las rocas.
