In the Hiking Epic Trails series, we find the coolest landmarks on each hiking trail and give them a name. However, some of them already have a name. In order, the landmarks in this video are Platform Rapids, Glen Falls Overlook, Upper Falls, The Main Overlook of Glen Falls, & The Beach At Glen Falls.

The Nantahala National Forest (/ˌnæntəˈheɪlə/), is the largest of the four national forests in North Carolina, lying in the mountains and valleys of western North Carolina. The Nantahala is the second wettest region in the country, after the Pacific Northwest. Due to its environmental importance and historical ties with the Cherokee, the forest was officially established on January 29, 1920 by President Woodrow Wilson.[3][4] The word Nantahala is a Cherokee derived, meaning Land of the Noonday Sun. In some spots, the sun reaches the floors of the deep gorges of the forest only when it is high overhead at midday. This was part of the homeland of the historic Cherokee and their indigenous ancestors, who have occupied the region for thousands of years.

The Appalachian Mountains (French: Appalaches)[a], often called the Appalachians, are a system of mountains in eastern to northeastern North America. The Appalachians first formed roughly 480 million years ago during the Ordovician Period. They once reached elevations similar to those of the Alps and the Rocky Mountains before experiencing natural erosion.[4][5] The Appalachian chain is a barrier to east–west travel, as it forms a series of alternating ridgelines and valleys oriented in opposition to most highways and railroads running east–west.

Definitions vary on the precise boundaries of the Appalachians. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) defines the Appalachian Highlands physiographic division as consisting of 13 provinces: the Atlantic Coast Uplands, Eastern Newfoundland Atlantic, Maritime Acadian Highlands, Maritime Plain, Notre Dame and Mégantic Mountains, Western Newfoundland Mountains, Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Valley and Ridge, St. Lawrence Valley, Appalachian Plateaus, and New England province.[6][7] The Appalachians do not include the Adirondack Mountains, a distinct and growing range that is a part of the Canadian Shield and belongs to the Grenville Orogeny.[8][9][10]

High Falls, Glenville, NC -- 4K Cinematic

High Falls is an easy and short hike off of the West Fork Tuckasegee River near Lake Glenville. There are several High Falls in the Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains, so make sure you have the right one selected. This particular High Falls is located in Glenville near Cashiers, while the other two are in the Jocassee Gorges and Dupont State Forest. This hike has a wide trail, easy to walk, has many stairs with a few creek stops along the way. As you approach the end near the falls, the trail narrows a bit and becomes stone steps and has several roots, so wear proper footing. This is a great relaxation spot on a hot day, however, this particular day was in December and it was very icy. It was an icy, chilly, and slippery morning, but the payoff to have High Falls alone for about 2 hours was totally worth it! For reference, if it looks wet in this video, it’s actually thin ice. This is one of the WC 100 Challenge.
