My next series of travel diaries takes a look at some of the landmarks in Northern Ireland, the last of the four countries I had visited that make up the United Kingdom.

Just as they had done in England, the Normans have left their mark in Northern Ireland with a number of castles, and this video looks at two 12th Century castles that consolidated their power on the province of Ulster.

Dundrum Castle Co. Down - Norman Castle in Northern Ireland

Dundrum castle is a Norman Castle in the town of Dundrum outside Newcastle on the Belfast road. Dundrum Northern Ireland has seen plenty of activity in its years - there is a known failed siege in 1205 - but it was captured by King John in 1210 and has had improvements and extensions through its different owners times. It is a stop off on some Game of Thrones tours now and it is an excellent place to spend half a day and have a picnic.

First of all, people should not get confused between Dundrum Castle in Northern Ireland - the one in our visit - and Dundrum Castle in County Dublin. Dundrum Castle in Northern Ireland is situated above the town of Dundrum, County Down, Northern Ireland.

This castle was constructed sometime near the beginning of the 13th century by John de Courcy, following his invasion of Ulster. Since it was built in a time of invasions and wars, Dundrum Castle was intended to be on a rocky hill in order to provide good views south over Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains, and west towards Slieve Croob and the plains of the Lecale to the east; it was actually built in order to control the access into Lecale from the west and south.

There is a long history behind Dundrum Castle and those who were controlling it. After John de Courcy, Hugh de Lacy strengthened the castle with a massive round keep - which stood at least three storeys high - which later on became very popular. Later in 1210, the castle was captured by King John who in 1260 added a gatehouse that is composed of two square towers on the south east side of the enclosure.

After that time, Dundrum Castle was then owned by different people through out its journey and now it is open for the public who could come inside and enjoy knowing more about this beautiful castle and at the same time enjoy the scenery from up there - it is definitely one of the castles in Northern Ireland that one should visit.

There are different places in Northern Ireland that were used for taking scenes related to the Game of Thrones movie series ( and Dundrum Castle was one of them since it appeared in one scene. Nowadays, there are tourists - who happen to be big fans of Game of Thrones - who plan to travel to Northern Ireland in order to visit those different locations related to Game of Thrones movie series (

In addition to Dundrum Castle, there are other castles in Northern Ireland which could be visited, such as Dunluce Castle ( Enniskillen Castle ( Carrickfergus Castle, Belfast Castle ( Monea Castle, Dunseverick Castle, Harry Avery's Castle, Audley's Castle, Kinbane Castle, Tully Castle, and others which we ourselves might still know nothing about or which we haven't stopped by yet. Choosing which one to visit will depend on two important factors; first of all, you should choose those with a rich history and those which are considered the most famous; secondly, you should choose those which will be close to where you are going to be because you might end up choosing some which are far away and which you will not have the time to go and check them up all by yourself.

There are lots of different things that one could do and lots of attractions to see in Northern Ireland ( but again, it is important to choose the places according to where you are heading and where you are staying. Since you will be visiting Dundrum Castle in Northern Ireland then there are some suggestions out there which we should recommend, such as Kilbroney Park ( Tollymore Forest Park ( the Newcastle Library, Murlough National Nature Reserve, Mount Panther Farm Park, Castlewellan Forest Park ( as well as other places which are a little bit farther than those but which people could actually visit while being around Dundrum Castle - a good plan will be with exactly looking at the attractions and their locations on the map is important to know how much time you will need to reach your destinations and get back home once again.

Northern Ireland is filled with lots of historical monuments and buildings which one should visit in addition to those natural views and destinations that could easily take the breath away - even we, Irish people, feel amazed whenever we come across any of these things and places, we could definitely say that we are proud of our country :-)

Dundrum Castle, Co. Down - Amazing Views from Norman Castle

We were driving back from Newcastle and seen a sign for this castle - the lovely brown signpost directed us up a slight hill from the town of Dundrum - not too far from Belfast. Wow - we were blown away! What a find!! One of the best Norman Castles I have seen... loved it! :-)

Perfect Norman Castle for kids - picnics, BBQ's and exploring the views are amazing. This Newcastle Castle in the town of Dundrum, Co. Down is a great stop. Added to our list of Castles in NI - if you enjoy Irish Castles and have visited other castles of Ireland then definitely add this one to your list - you will not be disappointed.

Some consider it ruins but others - just like me - consider it a beautiful place that dates back to the 13th century and shows how people used to build magnificent buildings and castles, even though they are not standing until these days in the same old way. Dundrum Castle which is located above the town of Dundrum in county Down, Northern Ireland, is not the same Dundrum Castle that is also located in Dundrum but in Dublin.

Back in the old days and when this castle was built, there was a reason behind building it, this reason is to control the access into Lecale from the west and the south; it stands on the top of a rocky hill to give good views of the south over Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains, as well as the west towards Slieve Croob and the plains of Lecale to the east.

There isn't much to see about this castle, just walking around the ruins and checking how the whole thing used to look like from the outside without even being a complete thing these days - discovering the place was like an achievement for us and walking around it was like completing what we have started - it is really a discovery for us and it is really exciting to walk around those old ruins.

Dundrum is a small village and townland in County Down in Northern Ireland and is located near Newcastle - where we were going back home from before discovering the sign that led us to Dundrum Castle - this small village is located just near the Dundrum Bay - another beautiful scene for the place from there and another reason to convince people to go and check the whole thing by themselves.

Since we have been to this castle, we should mention that Dundrum village is mostly known for it and it is referred to as the old ruined Norman castle that is situated there ( Dundrum Castle was held by several people after it was built in the 13th century by John de Courcy - this gives the castle much more importance for the history it carries.

As I have already mentioned above, heading to Dundrum Castle resulted from driving back home from Newcastle ( and this should bring up the topic of those different places which are located near Dundrum Castle that one could visit and pass by as well.

There are different options in Newcastle and different things that could be found there, such as the Tollymore Forest Park which we believe is one of the best in Northern Ireland and personally one of our favorite as well ( and there is also one of the different doors that appeared in Game of Thrones movie series and which most of its scenes were taken in Northern Ireland, it is door number three that appeared in the Percy French Restaurant that is located inside the Slieve Donard Hotel (

I believe that the old castles are considered the best when it comes to the places which people could visit in any country they are heading to, even those old ones which ended up being just ruins in the place - they all still manage to deliver a different kind of experience and give people the chance to wander with their minds to that old age - I have been in the same situation before.

I have visited several other castles in Northern Ireland before and those which I have fallen in love with are: Dunluce Castle in county Antrim ( there is Saunderson Castle in county Cavan, Ireland ( the Abbey Ruins and the Hidden Castle in county Mayo in Ireland - which is not very well known even by the local people ( as well as Carrickfergus Castle in county Antrim, Northern Ireland (

In any trip you will go to in any country around the world, you will definitely come across an old castle or even an old building that looks like a castle, and every single time of them you will fall deeply in love with what you are seeing in front of your own eyes - that is exactly what happens to me every single time I come across a new castle or discover the ruins of what was once a castle.

Northern Ireland - Some great places to visit in Northern Ireland - Places to see, visit and stay!

Places to visit in Northern Ireland - we included some of our favourite locations all across the North ( of Ireland ) also known as NI :-) There are so many more attractions to visit - but these are some of the locations we were lucky enough to visit recently.
Where have you been? Anywhere we should have included in this list? ** Award Winning Video**

We have been asked what are the best places to visit and what are the best things to do in Northern Ireland. This video is the start of a collection we will produce to answer this question. Some are traditional tourist attractions - others places locals tend to only know about.
For all those who once thought that Ireland is not filled with places they could visit, we are here with this video to prove them otherwise; Ireland is actually filled with lots of hidden gems that might not even fit in the days you are staying in the country; there are a lot of things to discover and visit in order to make your experience complete.

There are some general tips related to Ireland which we want to share with you if you are putting this country as your next destination. First of all, there are those beautiful days with the good weather but mostly there is the normal gloomy and rainy day in this city, so having something to protect you from the rain and warm you if you are cold is considered a must.

In addition to the weather, you should know that one of the interesting ways to get to know Ireland is through taking any of the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tours because in addition to the drivers who will most probably provide good information, these buses bring you too close to the landmarks that you want to visit, and at the same time might take you through streets which you have never considered walking through because you know nothing about or would have reached your destinations through using the underground.

And most importantly, make sure that if you are going to travel in winter - which is something we do not recommend because it would be very cold - you will need to make the right plan because the day is so short in winter and you might not be able to see all the things you planned to go to during the same day. Know where the landmarks are, choose those which are close to one another in order to visit during the same day, and always check when they open their gates and when they close in order not to end up going to a place that has already been closed before you could arrive.

Northern Ireland Tourism is exploding - and no wonder...I guess its only right we share our great location attractions with people from around the world :-)

Included in this video is -
Portaferry
Belfast City Hall (
Mourne Mountains
Castlewellan (
Dundrum Castle - Newcastle (
Leitrim Lodge - Game of Thrones filming location (
Tollymore Forest Park (
Sheep Island at Larrybane Quarry - Another Game of Thrones Shooting Location (
Giant's Causeway (
Percy French Restaurant
Titanic Quarter (
Giant's Ring - Belfast (
Antrim Lough Shore
Victoria square (
St. Anne's Cathedral (
Albert Clock (
Queens University Belfast (
Stormont (
Ulster American Folk Park
Belfast Harbour Marina

These are the top Ireland attractions which we thought tourists should visit. For those who have been to Northern Ireland before, what other places should we include from Northern Ireland for our next video? What other Northern Ireland attractions do you suggest that we should cover? Hopefully we got some decent Northern Ireland Tourist Attractions covered :-)

Are you asking us where you should go in Northern Ireland? Everywhere; yes, that's our answer, not that we are Irish people, but because this country is really holding lots of things and places which one should at some point come to visit and know more about, whether those historical places and sites or else those related to nature ;-) Okay we are biased... but we love this city and should provide this answer!

Amazing Video About Northern Ireland; Some great places to visit in Northern Ireland/Places to see
We think that Ireland with these different attractions we have placed should now be a destination you want to head to and visit, one that will take you through a tour of old landmarks as well as those which you might have already seen on TV screens and wondered where they are located. Its time you visited NI!
