48 Hours in Sudan: Pyramids, Deserts, and UNESCO Sites! #bucketlist #hiking #sudan #adventuretravel

FULL VIDEO:

After having explored most of the Middle Eastern countries reachable within a short flight from Dubai, we just had to do one last unexpected trip before saying goodbye to the UAE - so we picked exploring the Sudan with our friends!

A short non-stop Flydubai flight away, Sudan is home to many pyramids (more than Egypt, fact!), welcoming people, unique traditions and unbelievable raw beauty.

A true gem and yet-to-be-discovered off the beaten path destination, Sudan has so much to offer for a quick escape from the UAE, that you’ve probably never even heard about let alone dreamed of visiting.

48 Hours in Sudan | Day 1: Market, Sudan Museum and Dervish Ceremony

After a convenient 4-hour Flydubai flight from Dubai arriving in Khartoum at 10pm (no time to waste!), we received a warm welcome at the Khartoum International Airport by our tour company driver, who brought us to our hotel for the first night, the Acropole.

Useful information:

Currency: Sudanese Pound
Language: Arabic
Time change: UTC/GMT +2 hours
Best time to visit: October-April
Dress Code: Conservative
Alcohol: Sudan is a completely dry country - do not bring any alcohol in!

We started our 48 Hours in Sudan with an early visit to the bustling Friday market at the center of Khartoum. Food, clothes, even kitchen appliances were displayed, and the atmosphere was truly incredible. We felt totally in sync with the ambiance, and not completely as out of place as we could have imagined.

Make sure to not film or take pictures too much though, as locals don’t particularly like it, understandably. Unlike so many markets or souqs around the world that we have visited, there was no being bothered, hassled or barked at, everyone was just living their lives and we were so happy to just observe. Such is the case in a country with such few tourists.

We then visiting Omdurman, the old capital of Sudan, the Mahdi’s tomb and the Khalifa’s house, we headed to the Sudanese National Museum, home of many beautiful objects and two full temples rescued by UNESCO and moved from the Lake Nasser area, when it was flooded by the water.

As we do with most trips, we pulled a classic Jeff and Anne, barely researching anything before going, so it was a great start to our trip getting to know a little bit better the country we were in. Some people prefer to travel after exhaustive research into where they are going, we like to do the complete opposite, just show up and discover what is around us as it happens.

Around 4pm each Friday, a very unique Dervish ceremony takes place, near the tomb of the sufi leader Ahmed al Nil. The Dervishes ceremony gathers women, men and children together every week to pray, dance and sing together in one of the largest cemeteries in Khartoum, outside of a small mosque. We were lucky enough to be warmly welcomed around the prayers.

Not far from here there is an interesting site of petrified wood, an ancient forest with hundreds of huge trunks strewn out completely in the middle of a vast desert with little explanation. Later on we reached the necropolis of Nuri. After a little walk among these ancient ruins, we stumbled upon the pyramid of Pharaoh Taharqa dominating high above the the others. After the visit we reached our beautiful Nubian Rest-House, located just at the foot of the Jebel Barkal, with the small town of Karima situated nearby. We ate some delicious food, took a hot shower to get rid of the dust and passed out.

48 Hours in Sudan | Day 2: Jebel Barkal and Meroe Pyramids
After a delicious breakfast at the Rest-House, we headed over to visit the Jebel Barkal area. A landmark in the Nubian Desert, the Jebel Barkal can be seen from a few dozen kilometres whilst still in the open desert.

A huge rock mountain in the middle of desolate sand a few hundred meters from the banks of the River Nile.

At the foot of this wonderful and isolated red sandstone mountain, considered holy since the ancient times, there is a big temple, dedicated to the Pharaohs of the New Reign and to their patron, Amon. Amon's ancient Pure Mountain, the Olympus of the Nubians, was the religious Nubian heart for more than 1000 years.Subscribe to our Newsletter:

Sudan Travel adventure Day 5: Old Dongola to Karima- Limestone quarry, El Kurru tombs, Jebel Barkal

#sudan #travel #tourism #travelwithrichardandjudy #tourist #olddongola #dongola #nile #nileriver #nubian #guesthouse #karima #travelvlog #jebel #jebelbarkal

We spent a cozy night at the guest house in Old Dongola. In the morning We had a wonderful breakfast again before heading out for Karima. We encounter large amounts of sand drifting onto the road due to the high winds that day. You definitely need four-wheel drive here. We stopped at a limestone quarry that's still in use today, complete with lots of bats and a dead fox. Next stop was the Egyptian and Nubian tombs of El Kurru where our guide is one of the archaeologists who has been excavating the area for years. His insights were truly amazing. The tomb of the Nubian Pharaoh Tanutamani was particularly incredible dating back to 632 BC. Since we are alone in these tombs I couldn't help but be struck by the difference between here and Egypt two weeks ago. The paintings in the tomb of Tanutamani were unbelievable. Unfortunately, the bottom half of the paintings had been ruined by a flood in the past. We stopped for coffee with a few of our guides buddies where we see a drying very poisonous cobra-like snake that they're going to make a pair of shoes out of. Next, we stop at the amazing petrified forest that contained incredible specimen of petrified wood including one large broken up tree trunk that showed the root system at the bottom. It was truly astounding. We eventually arrive at our accommodations for the next two nights, the Nubian Rest House in Karima, Sudan which is run by in Italian hotel company and was absolutely magnificent. During check-in, we are greeted with a lovely snack of delicious Sudanese dates and popcorn with guava juice and pomegranate juice. After a short rest at the guest house, our guide and driver pick us up for our hike up 300 ft. tall mesa Jebel Barkal which has very significant religious significance for the ancient Kush and Egyptian occupiers. After a pretty rigorous climb, we had spectacular commanding views of the Nile River, Karima and the Temple of Amun just below, along with some nearby Meroitic era pyramids. Luckily for us getting down was much easier and took less than a minute as our guide promised. We were able to run down a large sand dune in front of Jebel Barkal which was really fun. We returned to our Nubian rest house where we have a lovely dinner including delicious ice cream which we haven't had at all during our trip so far.

Sudan Travel adventure Day 4: Visit ancient quarry & school in Tombos, Kerma, Old Dongola.

#sudan #travel #tourism #travelwithrichardandjudy #tourist #tombos #nile #nileriver #nubian #guesthouse #kerma #qubba #dongola #cartouche ##travelvlog

After another fabulous breakfast prepared by our chef and driver Ala-Adin, we strike out in the morning to visit the town of Tombos. Along the way we see a tricked out pickup truck and some beautiful door entrances to the classic Nubian homes. We make it to the quarry where we come upon the unfinished 1 ton statue of Egyptian Pharaoh Taharqa going back to 700 BC. Tombos, Sudan was the southernmost point that the Egyptians conquered. We also see ancient Egyptian inscriptions including the cartouche of the pharaoh. We then walk by a school where we get to see a lot of local children and then head back to the guest house to load up the car and head south to Old Dongola. Along the way we stop at the ruins of the ancient Nubian capital of Kerma dating back to 2500 BC. We stop at the museum and then head to the ferry which will take us across the Nile on our way to Old Dongola. On the ferry I meet a friendly deaf and mute man who wanted to buy my new GoPro 11 camera for like $10! Old Dongola was originally founded as a Nubian fort in the fifth century and eventually became the capital of Makuria, which was a Christian Nubian kingdom located in northern Sudan and southern Egypt. Makuria flourished until the 14th century when it was eventually defeated by the Arabs. We viewed the Throne Hall which was a defensive building built by the Makurian Kings in the 9th century. We were unable to enter the building but we did see a snake enter which I caught on camera. We then proceed past the Islamic cemetery containing multiple tombs called qubbas. We then arrive at the Old Dongola guest house at sunset where we meet some local people and have another gourmet dinner.

Day 5-driving through Dongola's Market, North Sudan

We were about to buy some basics soon after this video from the shop in the corner ( fresh eggs, bananas and jam). You may see all 290 videos of our expedition at my Playlist SUDAN in my channel. You are welcome to subscribe

From Dongola to Kerma in Northern Sudan

A trip to the Sudan in March, 2014.

How Safe Is Sudan for Travel?

Full safety review:

Sudan is African third largest country and sixteenth largest in the world.

It shares borders with Egypt, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia, Libya, and South Sudan.

Traveling to Sudan has its challenges and isn’t entirely safe, and apart from all this – it isn’t easy to get in, but if you do manage to, and you don’t go to the dangerous areas of the country, there are chances you will actually have a great time.

It may come as a surprise that the Sudanese people are very warm and friendly and if you’re one of those travelers that don’t like feeling too touristy, you will be happy as you can visit some awesome tourist attractions without even seeing another tourist.

Overall Sudan, overall, isn't a safe destination. It is considered to be very risky and many governments advise their citizens not to travel there. If you are already there, plan on returning as soon as the opportunity presents itself. It's a country of great conflicts and dangerous political turmoil.

Sudan, a trip between ancient monuments and amazing people.

Sudan is still a not common destination, but this incredible country boasts a rich thousand-years archaeological heritage that makes it absolutely fascinating. Taking a trip to Sudan means finding yourself catapulted into a pristine Africa, surrounded by ancient pyramids, desert landscapes, green and lush banks of the Nile, colourful markets and above all a smiling and friendly population that will make your journey a unique experience. Our trip starts from the bustling Khartoum and touches the most relevant attractions of the Nubian region, including the world-wide known Unesco Heritage site of Meroe.
