Damam constitutes the core of the Damam metropolitan area, also known as the Greater Damam area, which comprises the 'Triplet Cities' of Damam, Dhahran and Khobar. The area has an estimated population of 4,140,000 as of 2012 and is closely linked to the city through social, economic, and cultural ties. The city is growing at an exceptionally fast rate of 12 percent a year – the fastest in Saudi Arabia, the GCC, and the Arab world. As of 2016, Greater Damam is the 4th largest metropolitan area by both area and population in the Gulf Cooperation Council. The area that eventually became Damam was settled by the Dawasir tribe around 1923, with permission of King Ibn Saud. The area was originally a fishing hamlet and was developed into its current state within half a century soon after the discovery of oil in the region, both as a port city and an administrative center. With the unification of Saudi Arabia, Damam was made the capital of the newly formed Eastern Province. The Damam metropolitan area and the rest of the Eastern Province are served by the King Fahd International Airport (KFIA), the largest airport in the world in terms of land area (approximately 780 km2), about 20 km (32 mi) northwest of the city. The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) (Arabic: مركز الملك عبد العزيز الثقافي العالمي) also known as Ithra, is situated in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. It was built by Saudi Aramco and inaugurated by King Salman bin Abdulaziz on December 1, 2016. It is operated by Saudi Aramco and is currently the company’s main corporate social responsibility initiative with a focus on culture, learning and cross-cultural activities. The Center is located where the first commercial Saudi oilfield was found in March 1938. The Center incorporates a museum, children museum, library, cinema, theater, and exhibition halls. It was designed by the Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta.The Center has been listed in Time magazine as one of the world’s top 100 places to visit and attracted one million visitors in 2019.
