Uzbekistan STREET FOOD - Somsas Tour in Uzbekistan's HOTTEST CITY | Termez, Uzbekistan

After a quick day trip to the nearby town of Jakurgan, I arrived back in Termez, Uzbekistan just in time for my next adventure! Come along with me as I try some mouthwatering Uzbekistan street food on a nighttime somsas tour in Uzbekistan’s hottest city!

FEATURED:
Otabek:

My afternoon started at one of the mausoleums of the Sultan Saodat Complex in Termez. This complex also contains mosques and a khanaqa and was built between the 11th and 17th centuries. It’s the resting place of members of the Sayyid Dynasty of Termez.

The mausoleum contained lots of beautiful brick work. This type of design can only be found here and at Jakurgan Minaret. There was also stunning blue and aqua tilework around the archway. I loved the colors of the designs, which were white, aqua, and yellow.

Even though it was constructed during the Islamic Period, the architects included symbols from other religions, like Zoroastrianism and Buddhism.

Inside the crypt, one of the oldest parts of the complex, we saw the graves underneath the dome. Even Genghis Khan didn’t destroy this place when he destroyed Termez because of the influential people who were buried there.

Next, we headed to Kirk Kiz, an 11th-century complex. Some believe it was a palace, while others say it was a fortress. There’s a local legend that 40 women, led by the princess Gulaim, lived there and fought off raiding nomads.

It looked like a fortress to me! It’s a square, walled complex that’s about 54 meters long on each side. Each corner was protected by a tower. Archaeologists have been excavating the site since 2016 but are still unsure of its function.

On the grounds is a wish tree, where women tie a piece of cloth like a scarf or tissue on its branches so God will grand their wishes. The residency has 15 rooms that have been discovered, as well as huge hallways. Most of the building is in ruins, though. It was so large and grand!

Next, we stopped to get some watermelon. They usually cost 12,000 som/$1.26 USD each, but we negotiated and got 2 for 20,000 som/$2.10 USD.

We came across musicians playing traditional long horns called karnay, in a wedding near my hotel!

We started at Sina Restaurant, where they had a tandoor full of somsas baking inside. The guys who run the restaurant are from the town of Sina, and they brought their local somsa recipe with them. They’re crunchy on the outside and contain beef, onions, and lamb fat. You open them and eat them with a spoon with a spicy, gazpacho-like tomato sauce. The onions were crisp, and the fat was juicy. The sauce was the best part!

Then, we headed over to Denov Somsa, where they had just put the somsas in the tandoor when we arrived. It’s located in an open-air food court where you can get beer, kebabs, and more. I got a light local beer and tried a dense, chalky yogurt stick. Then I tried he national beer, which was more wheaty.

These somsas were from another region and were very buttery and crunchy. I bathed it in more of the spicy tomato sauce. It was my first spicy dish in Uzbekistan. I loved the onions and the beef inside. Somsas are the ultimate meat pastry. After I ate, I went to the back to see how they’re made! They flatten the dough, add the beef and onions so it’s really thick, and then they brush them with butter and put them in the tandoor! They’re so different from empanadas and samosas, which are always fried!

I hope you enjoyed coming on my somsas tour in Termez, Uzbekistan! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave a comment. Also, please subscribe to my YouTube channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

Waterfall Sangardak in Surkhandarya l Nature's Masterpiece

We have heard and read a lot about that place in Surkhandarya, where you can see all four seasons at the same time, where simaltaniously can be observed how the beautiful sun shines and illuminates everything around with its warm rays, drizzles of a fine rain and wind. But still I wanted to see it all with my own eyes. This is the Sargardak waterfall and its circumference. As you walk to your destination along a thin path through the mountains, you get the feeling that the mountains are alive and friendly carrying you to a designated place. Today we visited that wonderful place with our DOCA TOURS team.

The waterfall which flows from high, hitting the rocks around, pleases our eyes. Water, changing color under the rays of the sun, as if a rainbow gives us a mood and raises our the spirit. It is cold, but does not harm health, but on the contrary, it encourages, and the sound of falling streams of water has a calming effect, gives the one a strength.

“This is a true miracle of the nature,” says Fakhriddin aka, our accompanying guide in Surkhandarya, admiring the water that falls from an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level, and Sumbula (grass growing around water on a stony slopes) growing around gives a special beauty to the waterfall at any time of the year. This wonderful grass even in winter decorates the waterfall with its unusual appearance. They look very nice among the icy floes of a frozen waterfall.

It grows in the water for a reason. By going back to times, when a beautiful girl who lost her beloved man went deep into the water and disappeared there, and at the place of her finely braided hair a sumbula grew. No wonder people call hair of girls linking to sumbule. Since then, the grass as a wall surrounds the waterfall, and water droplets on the leaves of Sumbula, it turns out that the tears of that girl. On the territory of the waterfall, in addition to ornamental plants, fruits also grown, such as: grapes, figs, wild rose and many others. But they grow in the wild, and this gives the area a special mystery. According to local residents, the waterfall flows from the lake, which is located inside the mountains.

This place is famous under the name Sharsharamozor, Sharakmozor and every summer you can see a lot of visitors who came to admire this beauty. Around the waterfall you can see the extraordinary beauty of the rainbow, iridescent in various colors. In the Sangardak Mountains one can find many more springs, which are famous for such names as Sangardakbulok, Shirinbulok, Korabulok, Sirsoybulok. Since the water in spring flows directly washing out the roots of various medicinal plants and absorbs their medicinal properties, it is considered very useful for the human body.

LEGEND ABOUT CHARRAKMOZOR
- I don’t know for sure, but in childhood my father told me a story, - Fahriddin aka began his story. In ancient times, Sargardak was a large village where people lived in prosperity, there were many rich people, and the young men were real heroes. The girls were famous for their unearthly beauty. One day, late at night, robbers attacked the village. The enemy, who many times exceeded the villagers in terms of the number, took all their fortunes from the residents, killed everyone who could hold a sword. And they gathered to take the girls into captivity. Learning about this girl running towards the mountains. Rogues followed on their heels.

When the girls reached this place, which is now called “Sharakmozor”, tired, they fall to the ground. Raised their hands up and turned to heaven with the words do not let the enemy take us, save our honor. At this moment the huge rock broke into two parts and the road appeared inside the rock, when the girls entered there, the rock closed again and water appeared from there and started flowing, forming a waterfall. Since then, this place is called Sharakmozor, where visitors come to honor the memory of those girls.

Bukhara, which is situated on the Silk Route, is more than 2,000 years old. It is the most complete example of a medieval city in Central Asia, with an urban fabric that has remained largely intact. Monuments of particular interest include the famous tomb of Ismail Samani, a masterpiece of 10th-century Muslim architecture, and a large number of 17th-century madrasas.
The Historic Centre of Bukhara, situated on the Silk Roads, is more than two thousand years old. It is one of the best examples of well preserved Islamic cities of Central Asia of the 10th to 17th centuries, with an urban fabric that has remained largely intact.
Bukhara was long an important economic and cultural center in Central Asia. The ancient Persian city served as a major center of Islamic culture for many centuries and became a major cultural center of the Caliphate in the 8th century.
With the exception of a few important vestiges from before the Mongol invasions of Genghis Khan in 1220 and Temur in 1370, the old town bears witness to the urbanism and architecture of the Sheibani period of Uzbek rule, from the early 16th century onwards. The citadel, rebuilt in the 16th century, has marked the civic center of the town since its earliest days to the present,
Important monuments that survive from early times include the famous Ismail Samanai tomb, impressive in its sober elegance and the best surviving example of 10th century architecture in the whole Muslim world. From the 11th century Karakhanid period comes the outstanding Poi-Kalyan minaret, a masterpiece of decoration in brick, along with most of the Magoki Attori mosque and the Chashma Ayub shrine. The Ulugbek medresseh is a surviving contribution from Temurid. With the advent of the Sheibanids came some of the most celebrated buildings of Bukhara: the Poi-Kalyan group, the Lyabi-Khauz ensemble, the Kosh Medresseh and the Gaukushon medresseh in the Hodja-Kalon ensemble. Later buildings from this phase of Bukhara´s history include monumental medressehs at important crossroads: Taki Sarafon (Dome of the Moneychangers), Taki-Tilpak-Furushan (Dome of the Headguard Sellers), Tim-Bazzazan, and Tiro-Abdullah-Khan. In the early 17th century fine buildings were added, including a new great mosque, Magoki Kurns (1637), and the imposing Abdullaziz-Khan medresseh (1652).
