In this film I show you the region east of Capestang, north of Narbonne and west of Béziers. In Port Guerry, where the winery Les Domaines des Marins is today, I was let taste wine for the first time in my then youthful life, a special experience.During the filming, a very special boat came in front of our lens. A large barque that had been converted into a 5* grande luxe cruise ship. The ship belongs to the Belmond luxury Fleet and commutes between Béziers and Carcassonne. It sleeps 4 people and the weekly charter price starts at 5'000€ per person.
The whole series of films about the Canal du midi should finally also serve as a memory film for my parents and not just for Youtube.
The Canal du midi - with a length of 240km it connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean Sea at Sète and was completed in 1681. It brought progress and the way to modernity to the region and was important for the transport of people and goods until the end of the 20th century. At peak times, 110 million ton kilometers of goods were transported.
Today, the canal is practically used only for tourism, as the whole region is known for its cozy and relaxing vacations on various types of houseboats. However, bathing in the canal is prohibited due to its high microbial load. But due to its brownish-gray color, the canal does not look very inviting anyway. Until a few years ago, the waste water from the houseboats was also discharged directly into the canal.
A technical masterpiece built by the master builder Pierre-Paul Riquet with many obstacles and problems after the French King Louis XIV released the project in 1666. With its 98 lock basins the canal overcomes
Together with the Canal de Garonne, it provides a navigable connection from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, avoiding the arduous journey around the Iberian Peninsula. Already the Romans thought about a canal construction, in the Middle Ages even Leonardo da Vinci was involved in the planning work, but one failed at the supply of the canal with water.

The Digoin Canal Bridge is a canal bridge that allows the Canal Latéral à la Loire to cross the Loire. It allows the side channel to connect a little further with the channel of the Center (Canal du Centre), at the Campionnet port in Digoin. It ends with a lock from which it is separated by a short crossing basin. Only boats or pedestrians have access.It is one of the first major canal-bridges in France, with 243 meters long. It is the engineer Pierre-Alexandre-Adophe Jullien then aged only 29, who is the author, as well as that of Guétin, under the direction of the engineer-in-chief Jean Joseph Pierre Vigoureux.
Opened to navigation in 1838, at the same time as the canal1, it was expanded in 1870 and it was rebuilt between 1890 and 1896 by the engineer Léonce-Abel Mazoyer as part of the Freycinet channel gauge. It was thus deepened by raising its crowning.

Sancerre is a medieval hilltop town, commune and canton in the Cher department of central France overlooking the Loire River.The town is a cobweb of twisted streets with many buildings surviving from the Middle Ages.
Sancerre is located 310 meters above sea level, on an isolated mountain, attached to the hills of the natural region of Sancerrois and whose summit dominates the level of the Loire several hundred meters.
The town is about two kilometers from the left bank of the Loire and its confluence with the Vauvise, the lateral canal to the Loire and 43 km north-east of the Cher prefecture, Bourges.
