St. Johns and DeWitt, Michigan | MICHIGAN OFF THE BEATEN PATH

St. Johns and DeWitt are two cities located in Clinton County, Michigan north of Lansing. In this edition of Michigan Off the Beaten Path, I first head up to St. Johns, the current county seat of Clinton County where I get to walk around the historic downtown center, walk by the Paine Gillam Scott House, admire the historic train cars at the Clinton Northern Railway Museum, and eat lunch at Ryan's Roadhouse. After exploring the sights of St. Johns, I head south to the city of DeWitt which used to be the county seat of Clinton County before it was moved to St. Johns. I check out the small but charming downtown area and go for a walk along the Looking Glass River.

Fort Orleans, Trail of Death, and The Mormons - De Witt, MO History

De Witt, Missouri. A tiny village full of history!

FORT ORLEANS

“Fort Orleans, first European post in the Missouri Valley, was built by the French explorer Etienne Véniard De Bourgmond on the Missouri River close by, a few miles above the mouth of the Grand, 1723-24. The exact location of the fort is not known.

De Bourgmond, friend of the Indian and author of the first navigation report on the Missouri River, 1714, was chosen to build the fort by a French trading concern, the Company of the Indies. The fort was to serve as a check to any advance by the Spanish from the southwest and as a base for New Mexican and Indian trade. Some 40 men came with De Bourgmond on the fort building mission. Made Commandant on the Missouri, he was also in charge of making peace with the Comanche Indians.

A village of Missouri Indians was across the river from the fort. These Indians, of Souian stock, at one time called themselves Niutachis. They were probably first called Missouris, Algonquin for “he of the big canoe” by the Illinois Indians. The last of the Missouris died on the Oto Reservation in Oklahoma, 1907.

Westernmost outpost of France in what is now Missouri, the establishment at Fort Orleans included a chapel, first Catholic church in the Missouri Valley. The first resident priest was Abbé Mercier.

When the fort was built, De Bourgmond traveled into what is now central Kansas, 1724, where he fulfilled his commission to make peace with the Comanches. In 1725 he returned to France taking several Indian chiefs and a young Missouri maiden along for a visit. The whole party delighted the French who called the girl “Princess of the Missouri,” saw her baptized in Notre Dame, and married to a sergeant. De Bourgmond was made a noble and had for his coat of arms an Indian against a silver mountain.

De Bourgmond stayed in France, and in 1728 the fort was closed. Fort Orleans was built in territory claimed for France, 1682, and named Louisiana after Louis XIV by La Salle. France held the greater part of this claim 80 years, then ceded it, 1762, to Spain which held it 38 years, returning it to France, 1800, which sold it to the United States, 1803.”

Historic marker erected by the State Historical Society of Missouri and State Highway Commission, 1953.

POTAWATOMI TRAIL OF DEATH

“On Oct. 23, 1832, about 800 Potawatomi Indians camped near here on the forced removal from Indiana to Kansas. They camped at Thomas’ Encampment. Having marched 10 miles after ferrying the Grand River, wet bottomlands and severe cold made the march miserable. Over 40 Indians died on the Trail of Death. Erected 1999 by the Dewitt Community Club.”

THE MORMONS

“In 1838, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) living at Far West in Caldwell County, Missouri, were encouraged to settle at DeWitt by several landowners.
Land was purchased near this location in June, and within a few months several hundred Mormons had created a village of tents and wagons.
Land was cleared, crops were planted, and homes were built. However, the persistent misunderstandings which had followed the Mormons soon reached Carroll County.
By October, DeWitt was held in a virtual state of siege by non-Mormons from surrounding communities. To avoid further violence, on October 11, 1838, the Latter-Day Saints loaded their possessions into seventy wagons and departed.
This marker was presented to the people of DeWitt by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, July 4, 1976.”
