Visiting Mile Zero | The City of DAWSON CREEK, British Columbia

Today, we are in the City of Dawson Creek, home to Mile Zero. It is where the Alaska Highway starts. The city is popular amongst American and Canadian travelers who are heading to Alaska alike . Contrary to popular belief, this city has no concrete connection to the hit drama series, Dawson's Creek, but it's still a beautiful place. Feel free to hum to I Don't Want To Wait by Paula Cole, if you want, or whenever you approach the city.

This is a Casual walkaround video without talking. Video includes the site of the Actual Mile Zero marker, the downtown core of Dawson Creek City, The wind turbines (windmills) up in bear mountain wind park, the majestic view of the plains west of the city from on top of bear mountain, the motel I'm staying at, the restaurants I've been to, including the Roadhouse, Sam's Friends, Flavours 8, and the actual Dawson Creek. Clips were filmed during summer and fall of 2022 and 2023.

The Stunning Alaska Highway! Dawson Creek to Liard Hot Springs!

2023 Alaska Journey - Episode 3

This week we start our journey on the Alaska Highway through British Columbia as we travel from Dawson Creek to Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park.

First Stop, Dawson Creek and the N.R.A. Station Museum at the Visitor Center, where we learned a lot about the AlCan highway.

The Alaska highway, also known as the AlCan Highway, was built in response to Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. In 1942, the US entered into World War II and a supply and defense route to Alaska was critical. Canada agreed to building the Alaska-Canada highway on the condition that the United States foot the bill, and that the highway be turned over to Canada after the war.

The construction of the highway was a massive undertaking. It was constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers with over 10,600 soldiers and 16,000 Canadian and American civilian contractors to complete the road. The highway stretches over 1,500 miles from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Delta Junction, Alaska. The crews worked in extreme weather conditions, rugged terrain, swamps and lots of mosquitoes. Despite the challenges, the AlCan highway was completed in just eight months.

After the war, the road was opened to the public, and it has since become a popular tourist destination, offering stunning views of the Canadian and Alaskan remote wilderness.

We left Dawson Creek a day early due to wildfires along with unbearable smoke. We found a nice boondocking spot just outside of Fort Nelson.

We were astonished by the state of the road as we drove down the highway the following morning. It was hard to see all of the stories we had heard and our worries about the rough remote highway! So far, this highway is superior to many others in the lower 48 states!

We had good roads, great views, no cell service past Fort Nelson and lots of wildlife!

Next stop, Summit Lake Campground in Stone Mountain Provincial Park with a campsite right on the lake. Stone Mountain Provincial Park encompasses much of the Northern Rocky Mountains. The park is home to alpine valleys, mountain peaks, rivers, remote lakes and many species of wildlife.

We moved on to our next location, Muncho Lake Provincial Park. This stretch of the highway is breathtaking and Muncho Lake is a major highlight of the Alaska Highway. We stayed at Northern Rockies Lodge RV sites, a full service stop for Alaska Highway travelers.

Last stop, Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park is located on the Alaska Highway north of Muncho Lake.

This section of the highway had a lot of wildlife! (Caribou, Stone Sheep, Moose, Bear and Wood Bison)
When we reached Liard River Hot Springs we saw the electric fence we had read about.

BC Parks constructed the 8-foot electric fence around the entire campground to prevent bears and other wildlife from becoming accustomed to humans and to keep them moving through the wildlife corridor. The park has a warm water swamp home to a wide variety of plants, mammals and birds. There were even small fish, Lake Chub, that have adapted to warm water. They have been isolated from other populations for thousands of years.

Moose and bear both eat in the warm water swamps so we had to be on the look-out at all times. A rare predatory black bear attack occurred at the park in 1997, claiming two lives.

Liard River Hot Springs is the second largest natural hot spring in Canada. It is a natural river of hot water rather than a spring fed man made pool. It is a must when driving the Alaska highway!

Stay tuned for more from the SilverVagabonds! Next week we continue our Journey to Alaska through the Yukon Territory!

After a whole night of fighting with millions of mosquitos, we were approaching a legendary town in the far northwest of Canada driving the beautiful Klondike Highway.

With a population of only around 1,400 people, Dawson City is a small but mighty town with a rich history and tons of activities to keep you entertained.

This quirky little town is located in the heart of the Yukon Territory in Canada.

It has a rich gold rush history and is home to some truly unique experiences that you won't find anywhere else.

We immediately have a feeling that we’ve gone back in time.

Other than the Front steet, none of the town’s site streets are paved but pedestrians are treated well with boardwalks, adding to the feeling that we’re in a remote wild west gold rush town.

Situated on the banks of the Klondike and Yukon Rivers, Dawson was founded in 1896 during the Klondike Gold Rush, when prospectors from all over the world flocked to the region in search of gold.

Dawson City became the center of the gold rush, and at its peak, it had a population of around 30,000 people. In search of their fortunes, prospectors created a bustling, wild frontier town.

Today, Dawson City is a popular destination for overlanders looking to experience a piece of the gold rush history.

It doesn’t seem like that first, but there are an incredible amount of activities to do in this fun little town.

To learn more about the fascinating gold rush history that put the town on the map, we’re taking a guided tour organised by the Visitor Information Centre.

Recently, however, what makes the city constantly appear in blogs and travel magazines is the famous sourtoe cocktail.

We stop by the Sourdough Saloon and take a shot at the famous Cocktail - a legendary drink that comes complete with a real human toe floating in it! It’s a pretty unique experience. Just don't swallow the toe and you'll earn your place in a special club that now has over 100,000 members.

The Sourtoe Cocktail was created in the 1970s by a man named Captain Dick Stevenson, who was a bartender at the Sourdough Saloon. According to legend, Stevenson found a preserved human toe while cleaning out an old cabin, and he decided to use it as a gimmick to attract customers to the bar. The Sourtoe Cocktail became an instant hit, and it has been a popular attraction at the Sourdough Saloon ever since.

The bar maintains a Toe Captain, who is responsible for ensuring that the rules are followed and for replacing toes when they become too worn or damaged.
The Sourtoe Cocktail has become a beloved tradition in Dawson City and has attracted visitors from all over the world who come to the Sourdough Saloon to experience this unique and unusual drink.

After learning all about it, there is nothing else left but to actually drink it!

If you happen to be in Dawson City at the end of June, you'll be able to celebrate three different events all in just 10 days - National Indigenous Peoples Day, the summer solstice, and Canada Day.

To experience the old wild-west vibe even further, we head over to the Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall for an evening of gaming and live entertainment.

This historic hall is the only legal gambling establishment in the Yukon and when we step inside we are transported to a world of glittering lights, endless card games, and live entertainment that have us tapping our toes all night long.

Dawson City is usually also the starting and ending point of the Dempster Highway for overlanders. The infamous arctic highway, that’s really just a maintained dirt track takes a toll on vehicles.

That is also true for vans and cars that don’t have an accident like we did. Just opposite the Visitior Information Center we end up setting up an improsed overlander camp where everyone is cleaning, maintaining or repairing their rigs. We need several days to sort out the Iveco to make it ready for the next leg of our journey: Alaska.
