The coolest mini city! Cumberland, MD
Heading westbound on interstate 68 thru Cumberland, MD. This city has always been one of my favorite places in the US. I have been driving through it ever since I was a little kid and I've stopped to check it out on a few occasions. I love how the city is all compact and right up on the interstate. The mountain tops are dotted with amazing churches and the architecture is very Appalachian/northeastern. This is also where the C&O canal terminates. At one point in time, you could take a barge all the way from here, in Cumberland, to Georgetown in Washington DC. From there the Potomac was navigable and you could continue on to the Chesapeake and eventually the Atlantic. Heading the other direction (west) from Cumberland, you would have to unload the barge and take a train to the Monongahela River, which would meet with the Allegheny in downtown Pittsburgh and form the Ohio River. Hence the name C&O or Chesapeake & Ohio canal.

Adventures: Three Days in The Cumberland Gap Region & Kentucky
Traveling is best with good friends. So, with social distancing in mind Mary, and I set out on a long weekend to Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, which sits at the meeting point of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia.
With caves to explore, miles of trails, and loads of breathtaking views, there is no shortage of things to do in the area. The area's rich history is on full display, with the National Park Service's largest historic restoration project to date; restoring the Cumberland Gap pass to its original condition our ancestors would have encountered in the late 1700s.
Pine Mountain State Resort Park is close by, perched on a mountain overlooking the town of Pineville Kentucky. Outstanding views, great hiking opportunities, and unique natural features make it a destination unto itself.
We ventured back North a bit to Central Eastern Kentucky to the Red River Gorge Geological Area and Natural Bridge State Resort Park. The adventurous can hike to the top of the ridge,. We decided on the chairlift and took in the amazing views along the way.
While in the Red River Gorge Geological Area, we took a quick drive down a dusty backroad to the Rock Bridge, and Creation falls. The falls sit only a few hundred feet upstream from the rock bridge. The pair make a great place to visit, well worth the hike.
Special Thanks to Mary P. who provided a few photos which I used in this video.

Cumberland s 20K Relocation Offer #USA #population #immigration #travel
In an effort to attract new residents, the city of Cumberland, #Maryland, has introduced an enticing offer: up to $20,000 for #families willing to relocate.
This initiative, known as the “Choose Cumberland Relocation #Package Program,” aims to #rejuvenate the city by offering $10,000 in relocation #cash and a matching #dollar-for-dollar incentive of up to $10,000 for approved home renovations or down #payments on newly #constructed homes.
With the median #home #price in Cumberland at $150,000, according to Redfin, this financial boost could significantly ease the transition for newcomers.
However, the application period has closed, with more #interest than the city could #accommodate, as only ten packages were initially available.
#Cumberland, once dubbed the “#Queen City,” offers a #picturesque setting
nestled in the #Appalachian Mountains, conveniently located near major #metropolitan areas like #Baltimore and #Pittsburgh.
The city, #founded in 1787, boasts a #rich history and a charming rural atmosphere.
For those seeking a quieter #lifestyle with access to urban #amenities, Cumberland presents an #attractive option.
The relocation program not only aims to draw new residents but also to stimulate the local housing and #labour markets, contributing to the city’s #long-term revitalisation goals.
Successful applicants must #commit to residing in Cumberland for at least five #years to retain the funding.
Despite its scenic allure, Cumberland faces significant challenges.
The city is grappling with a declining population and economic struggles.
Ruth Davis-Rogers, Cumberland’s #historic planning and preservation #specialist, highlighted the issue, stating,
“We are losing our population. Our population is aging.”
Census data reveals a #median household #income of $46,000, considerably lower than the national median of $80,600, and a median age of 42 years.
These factors contribute to the city’s efforts to attract #younger families and #professionals.
While the relocation incentive is promising, potential movers should weigh these realities against the financial benefits and the lifestyle Cumberland offers.
Cumberland’s strategy is not unique; it reflects a broader trend among American cities seeking to reverse population decline and stimulate economic growth.
By offering financial incentives, these cities hope to attract new residents who can #contribute to #revitalising local communities.
The success of such programs depends on various #factors, including the availability of #jobs, #quality of life, and the effectiveness of the incentives in addressing the cities’ #underlying challenges.
As Cumberland looks to secure additional funding to extend its program, the city remains hopeful that these efforts will lead to a brighter #future for its residents and #newcomers alike.
Cumberland is not alone in its efforts to attract new residents through financial incentives.
#Topeka, #Kansas, with a population of 127,000, has launched the “Choose Topeka” program, targeting Shawnee #County businesses.
This employer match initiative offers up to $15,000 to companies for relocating employees to the city.
Topeka’s cost of living is notably affordable, at 13.8% below the U.S. average, according to Kiplinger.
Meanwhile, Little Rock, #Arkansas, ran the “Love, Little Rock” program,
offering $10,000 to out-of-state movers who found work with participating businesses.
Although this program ended in #December 2023, it also rewarded locals who recruited outside talent.
#Newton, #Iowa, with a population of 16,000, has been running a #housing initiative since 2014.
#Homebuyers of newly built homes valued at $240,000 or more can receive $10,000 cash and a “Get to Know Newton” #welcome package.
These #programs highlight a growing trend among cities to use #financial incentives as a tool for #economic and #demographic revitalisation.
