Exploring Newchurch Halt and Culcheth Railway Station sites - abandoned closed disused - Warrington

A look around the remains of both Newchurch Halt and Culcheth Station which both served the large village of Culcheth, between Warrington and Leigh.

They were situated on the Great Central line between Glazebrook and Wigan. Newchurch was open between 1943 and 1964 while Culcheth lasted from 1884 to 1964.

Newchurch is very overgrown but there are entrance steps and old fence posts left, and possibly remnants of the old platforms. The Culcheth site has been cleared and turned into a park but there are a few signs left, including a fine Victorian road bridge and retaining walls.

Filmed 16 July 2022.

Places to see in ( Birchington - UK )

Places to see in ( Birchington - UK )

Birchington-on-Sea is a village in north east Kent, England, with a population of around 10,000. It is part of the Thanet district and forms part of the civil parish of Birchington. It lies on the coast facing the North Sea, east of the Thames Estuary, between the seaside resorts of Herne Bay and Margate. As a seaside resort, the village is a tourist and retirement destination. The village's Minnis Bay is a family beach with attractions such as sailing, windsurfing, a paddling pool and coastal walking routes. Its three smaller beaches are surrounded by chalk cliffs, cliff stacks and caves.

The village was first recorded in 1240. Its parish church, All Saints', dates to the 13th century and its churchyard is the burial place of the 19th century Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Quex Park, a local 19th century manor house, is home to the Powell-Cotton Museum and a twelve bell tower built for change ringing. The museum contains a large collection of stuffed exotic animals collected by Major Percy Powell-Cotton on his travels in Africa, and also houses artefacts unearthed in and around Birchington by his daughter, Antoinette Powell-Cotton, a keen archaeologist.

Birchington was first recorded in 1240 as Birchenton, a name derived from the Old English words 'bircen tun', meaning a farm where birch trees grow. Birchington-on-Sea is located in northeast Kent, on the coast of the Thames Estuary. The village is 14 kilometres (9 mi) to the east of Herne Bay and 6 kilometres (4 mi) to the west of Margate. The small town of Westgate-on-Sea lies between Birchington and Margate.

Minnis Bay is a popular family beach with attractions such as sailing, windsurfing, cafes, beach huts, public houses, restaurants, a paddling pool and coastal walking/cycling routes. The beach has gained a European Blue Flag Award for its cleanliness and safety. The village has three other smaller beaches, which are surrounded by chalk cliffs and cliff stacks. Wildlife that can be observed in the Thames Estuary includes seals, velvet swimming crabs and the migrant turnstone.

Paintings by local artists are displayed at the David Burley Gallery in Birchington Library. Community activities take place at the Birchington Village Centre, including adult education classes, drama productions by the Birchington Guild of Players and concerts by the Birchington Silver Band. In 1989, Birchington-on-Sea was twinned with the town of La Chapelle d'Armentieres, near Lille in northern France; Birchington Twinning Association arranges events between the two communities, such as school trips, concerts and war remembrance services. Since 1932, Birchington has held a street carnival each summer.

Birchington-on-Sea railway station is on the Chatham Main Line which runs between Ramsgate in East Kent and London Victoria. Other stations on this line include Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Faversham, Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester and Bromley South. Birchington is around 1 hour and 40 minutes from London by Mainline train. A National Express coach service also runs between London Victoria and Ramsgate via Birchington-on-Sea.

Hyde Hall - New Global Growth Vegetable Garden 2017

Always good to visit Hyde Hall, but this time it was to explore the garden's new winter garden walk, and the new global growth vegetable garden. Neither new attraction disappointed.

Castle Hill and Victoria Tower - the roof of Yorkshire

Towering above Huddersfield in Yorkshire, Castle Hill has been a place of refuge and safety since the Bronze Age. Rebuilt and extended in successive centuries, it was topped by a medieval Castle. Victoria Tower was built in the late C19th to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. It was opened in 1899 and is still publicly accessible. The top of the Victoria Tower is 1000 feet above sea level, commanding panoramic views across the valleys and hills around Huddersfield.
The site is managed by Kirklees Council. Please visit their website for information and opening times.

Southwell Minster and Archbishop's Palace

Southwell Minster, the Cathedral of Nottinghamshire, is rich historical and architectural interest. It provides fine examples of the main styles of architecture, particularly Norman and early English. The latter is very evident in the 13th century Chapter House, one of the Minsters most glorious features with some of the finest examples of naturalistic carvings in the country - the Leaves of Southwell.

Music used in video is from Enderal Project and composed by : Marvin Kopp, Simon W. Autenrieth, Nicolas Samuel Lietzau, Andreas Makusev and Sebastian Löbbers :)

Should you visit Pendennis Castle Falmouth? - I was Disappointed! - Days Out in Cornwall

We take a detailed look at what’s on offer to the tourist at Pendennis Castle in Falmouth. It is owned by English Heritage, and is a popular tourist attraction in Cornwall with over 70,000 visitors a year. Using Tripadvisor and Google reviews, we set out to discover if this is a great day out, or disappointing and overpriced.

The Castle was built in the reign of King Henry VIII as part of a National building programme of coastal artillery forts in response to the threat of invasion by French and Spanish forces. During the next 500 years, different enemies were identified and the defences modernised and expanded which means there is a lot to explore on site.

Currently, the attraction is scoring a very respectable 4.5 stars out of 5 on Trip Advisor and all appears great, but how did we get on when we visited? How will we score our day out?

Join us as we take a look around the Castle, explore the other military exhibits on site, and review a Cornish Cream Tea at the Cafe. And stick around because we show you a great money saving tip to visit all of English Heritage sites in Cornwall at a fraction of the usual cost.

The Trip Advisor comments and Google reviews have been taken at face value, and have not been verified.

We hope you enjoy watching Sarah & Andrew

The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on YouTube, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.

Frequently asked questions:
Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.

The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.

If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!

Sarah and Andrew

What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII

How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.

Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.

What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

— Short History
- Built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton as a fortified residence.
- Richard was a Knight of the Shire. In 1371, he became Lord High Treasurer and Keeper of the Great Seal.
- In 1378, he became Lord Chancellor but resigned in 1380 when the government collapsed. His successor was beheaded though, and so he took up the position again, only to be removed by the king in 1382. After this he dedicated himself to rebuilding Bolton Castle.
- It is still a mystery how the family acquired its wealth.

- An Astronomical Clock has been described in the courtyard during the 16th century.
- In 1536, John, 8th Baron Scrope supported the Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion against the religious reforms of King Henry VIII. He gave the Abbot, Adam Sedbar, sanctuary in the castle. By consequence, John had to flee and the king ordered Bolton Castle be torched, causing extensive damage.
- After a few years the damage had been repaired and John was allowed to return to parliament.

- In July 1568, Mary, Queen of Scots, was held prisoner at Bolton Castle for six months under the watch of Henry, 9th Baron Scrope.
- The castle was not suitable for housing a queen, so tapestries, rugs, furniture and more were borrowed from local houses and nearby Bernard Castle.
- Mary was allowed to roam the local countryside and even go hunting. She was even allowed to meet with local Catholics for which Scrope was severely reprimanded.

- In 1630, Emanuel Scrope died without an heir. Bolton Castle passed to his eldest illegitimate daughter. She married Charles Powlett, 6th Marquess of Winchester and 1st Duke of Bolton.
- The castle is still owned by their descendant having never been sold.

- Today the castle is a tourist attraction and remains one of the best preserved Medieval Castles in the country.
- The site includes Archery, Falconry, a Garden with a Maze, Tea Room, Shop, Restored Rooms and stunning surroundings. They also hold events and weddings.

Half an Hour at (399) - Ty Croes Station 19.08.2022 - Transport for Wales trespasser - Class 158 175

Ty Croes is the last station on the North Wales Coast mainline to feature in the Half an Hour at... series.

It is a small station located on Anglesey between Bangor and Holyhead. It serves a very rural area and has an unusual layout with two staggered platforms either side of a level crossing.

It is operated and served by Transport for Wales. At the time of recording a trespasser was seen crossing the tracks while the barrier gates were down.
