This is the sixth episode of our trip to Cuba and our 1 day in Cienfuegos, which we visited in September 2022. We start the day bright and early for our last breakfast with a view of Viñales. We take a Taxi Colectivo and arrive in Cienfuegos just in time to catch a tropical storm.

The city of Cienfuegos preserves one of the most homogeneous urban centers in Cuba. It is full of classical facades and slender columns that provide an atmosphere reminiscent of 19th-century France, which inspired it. In fact, the city was founded in 1819 by a French emigrant, don Luis D'Clouet.
Cienfuegos is known as the Pearl of the South of Cuba and not a surprise, since this small city has managed to seduce travelers from all over the world. Travellers come to see the elegant mix of its cultivated French spirit and its affable Caribbean style. In the bay itself you can read a sign that says The city I like best, quoting the words of the famous singer Benny Moré.
Cienfuegos is open to the sea and is situated right on Cuba's largest natural bay. The whole city enjoys an enviable coastal environment, which, along with the tranquility that can be found in its renovated streets devoid of crowds of tourists, are some keys that have been declared a World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2005.
What are the best places to see in Cienfuegos? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cienfuegos is a colorful city where the emerald green of its leafy lands and the turquoise blue of its waters stand out. The province is full of small coves, caves and coral reefs; but its main attraction is really inland, in the waterfalls of El Nicho, a lush natural enclave located in the Sierra de Escambray, within the Parque Natural Topes de Collantes.
Cienfuegos can be divided into two distinct areas: the central area, where the Prado and Parque Martí are located; and Punta Gorda, a small territory that cuts across the bay and is home to numerous eclectic palaces dating from the early 20th century.
The most fascinating points of interest in the central area are the Parque José Martí, the Paseo del Prado, the Arco del Triunfo, the Catedral de la Purísima Concepción (Cathedral), the Teatro Tomás Terry (Theatre), the Colegio San lorenzo, the Casa de la Cultura Benjamín Duarte, the Museo Histórico Provincial (Regional Museum), the Palacio de Gobierno, the Casa del Fundador, the Museo Histórico Naval Nacional, the Cementerio de la Reina, the Museo de Locomotivas, the Malecón de Cienfuegos, the statue of Benny Moré, the Museo del Deporte. While in the area of Punta Gorda stand out: the Palacio Azul, the Club Cienfuegos, the Parque de Esculturas, the Palacio de Valle, the Centro Recreativo La Punta. A little further away is the monumental Necrópolis Tomás Acea. On the outskirts of the town is the picturesque Playa Rancho Luna (Beach), with its hotel resorts; the hometown of Benny Moré, Santa Isabel de Las Lajas; the Castillo de Jagua (Castle), the Laguna Guanaroca (Lagoon), the Jardín Botánico de Cienfuegos (Botanical Garden), the El Nicho Waterfalls, the Ciego Montero spa, Cayo Loco and Yamaraguas
What are the best plans to make in Cienfuegos? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cienfuegos is a city that offers numerous activities to do. Due to its proximity to Trinidad they transformed it into an ideal city to visit during your trip to Cuba.
Undoubtedly, one of the best plans is to visit El Nicho, a couple of spectacular waterfalls in the heart of the Sierra de Escambray. To get there, you'll have to walk on trails and cross bridges but the reward is more than adequate. Besides, once there, you can refresh yourself in one of the paradisiacal natural pools.
If you want to get to know the spirit of Cienfuegos in depth, the best thing to do is to take a walk in the central Parque José Martí and discover the wonderful eclectic architecture of the 19th century that surrounds it, such as the Arco del Triunfo, the Palacio del Gobierno or the Catedral de la Purísima Concepción.
If you are looking to relax on the beach the best thing to do is to enjoy Playa Rancho Luna and its crystalline waters. A little further away, between Cienfuegos and Trinidad, you will find Villa Guajimico, a destination for diving lovers.
Other plans you can make are to follow in the footsteps of singer Benny Moré in nearby Santa Isabel de Las Lajas. If you love flamingos, you can't miss the flamingo reserve at Laguna Guanaroca, north of the city

🇦🇼 What to do in Aruba! 🦩 - Aruba Cruise Port Tour
We get lots of questions about what to expect at the Aruba cruise port. To help you plan your trip we are going to tell you everything you need to know about the Aruba cruise port . Stay tuned to find out what we thought and how you can prepare for your day in Aruba.
The arrivals and departures are very easy at the Oranjestad Aruba cruise port. There are 4 spots for ships, you will be docked at berth B, C, F or G all of which are close together.It is not a far walk to the terminal building or out of the port, it only takes about 5 minutes which is awesome. Being that it is not a large dock there were not any trams. If you are interested in an Aruba tour there are companies right at the port offering Aruba cruise excursions. Just remember to leave lots of time to get back to the port as the cruise ship will not wait. You can always book an excursion with the cruise line and they will wait.
The Aruba cruise port is really a jumping off point to start your Aruba trip. There aren't any restaurants or bars at the cruise port, I think that is because you are just a just a short walk from the restaurants, shops and bars downtown. Most people will be going there instead of staying at the port. So when planning your Aruba trip you will want to think about exploring outside of the port.
In our Aruba cruise port guide we also talk about what is near the port so you have some ideas. If you are interested in exploring the island on your own the public buses are affordable and stop at many beaches, taxes are also a great way to explore the island. If you are interested in shopping the town of Oranjestad is right outside the port. Some of the other common places to visit in the downtown area are the Archaeological Museum of Aruba, the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum, and the Renaissance Mall and Marketplace. As we said you can book your Aruba cruise excursions with the cruise line, explore on your own or book at the port. The top 5 beaches in aruba are Eagle Beach, Baby beach, Palm Beach, Arashi and Druif Beach. I'm usually all for walking but it seemed like a bit too much of a walk in the heat of the day so I would recommend taking a taxi or the bus instead. So when thinking about Aruba things to do, you have lots of options from a chill beach day, shopping or a more extreme excursion.

This is the drive from Ave. de Mesilla to the new I-25 interchange. The interchange just opened days before this video was filmed. The interchanged was originally scheduled to be finished on the week of April 23, 2013. They finished about 3 weeks ahead of schedule.
Unfortunately, they installed the signs on the interchange wrong. The signs that have exit only are posted where a regular down arrow should have been used. It could confuse drivers thinking that the freeway narrows to only one lane [which would not meet Interstate guidelines where a minimum of 2 lanes each direction is required].

CIENFUEGOS - PUNTA GORDA - CUBAN COOL
Every city should have a Punta Gorda - a part of town that is different and cool to visit and preferably on a long spit of land or a thin peninsula that adds to the impact. In other words a physical setting that is striking. Well Punta Gorda fits that bill. Of course I had no idea what to expect. The long walk to Punta Gorda along the malecon is worthwhile in and of itself but then the architecture takes over and before long I was feeling like i was in Key West, Florida ...well anyway - watch the video as I get more and more excited about Punta Gorda.
