🇫🇷 COUTANCES, Normandy Wonderfull Town, France - Walking Tour [4K/60fps]

🌳 With its majestic Notre-Dame cathedral and its botanical garden, one of the most beautiful in Normandy, Coutances is a dynamic city offering a real quality of life.
📜 Coutances, classified as a Land of Art and History, has a rich historical past.
🏛️ The city was erected in the 1st century BC. Capital of the Unelles (Gallic people), it was named Cosédia, then renamed Constantia in the 4th century.
⚔️ Coutances was the administrative, judicial, and religious capital of Cotentin until 1795, when the administrative capital was established at Saint-Lô.
💣 It was hard hit by the Hundred Years War, then by the Wars of Religion. Another blow was dealt to the city during the bombings of June 6 and 13, 1944, during which the city was destroyed at 60%!
🏗️ The reconstruction was done in respect of the traditional architecture of the city. Since then, Coutances has regained a certain economic dynamism.

Tour of the Stunning Château d’Ancy-le-Franc in the Heart of Burgundy

Château d’Ancy-le-Franc is renowned for containing France’s Biggest Collection of Renaissance Murals. The chateau has also hosted many prestigious guests, including Henry IV, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV who stayed in the Blue Room, or Salon Bleu.

Built in the 16th century by Italian architect Sebastione Serlio, the château has a plain, austere, grey stone exterior, with massive square towers and a grand front entrance. Its lavish interior is richly-decorated, with carved or painted walls and ceilings. It has been described as a slice of Renaissance Italy in the heart of Burgundy.

What is Hotel Barging?

Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.

This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.

Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!

European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.

The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.

Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.

VEZELAY | Les Plus Beaux Villages de France | Most Beautiful Villages of France |

There are many on the list, yet Vezelay is definetely one of the most beautiful of the most beautiful!

Something about its location and its position on the hill give this French village a feeling that others have a hard time matching. With a 270 degree view from behind the cathedral and it very cool tiny streets, Vezelay is hands down not to be missed top destination in France.

Sitting in the région Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in the department of Yonne, Vezelay is only the 2nd village from Yonne to be nominated for the list of Les Plus Beaux Village de France.

The village is perfect in the morning as you might get a chance to catch the beautiful interior of the Vézelay Abbey in full morning action. Evenings offer up a cracking view on the northern French countryside and there are plenty of fantastic small restaurants that are well worth the visit.

We haven't seen them all yet, but Vezelay definetley makes the top 5 on our list of Les Plus Beaux Village de France .

Places to see in ( Rouen - France ) Cathedrale Notre Dame de Rouen

Places to see in ( Rouen - France ) Cathedrale Notre Dame de Rouen

Rouen Cathedral is a Catholic church in Rouen, Normandy, France. It is the see of the Archbishop of Rouen, Primate of Normandy. The cathedral is in the Gothic architectural tradition. A church was already present at the location in the late 4th century, and eventually a cathedral was established in Rouen as in Poitiers. It was enlarged by St. Ouen in 650, and visited by Charlemagne in 769.

All the buildings perished during a Viking raid in the 9th century. The Viking leader, Rollo, founder of the Duchy of Normandy, was baptised here in 915 and buried in 932. His grandson, Richard I, further enlarged it in 950. St. Romain's tower was built in 1035. The buildings of Archbishop Robert II were consecrated in 1065. The cathedral was struck by lightning in 1110.

Construction on the current building began in the 12th century in Early Gothic style for Saint Romain's tower, front side porches and part of the nave. The cathedral was burnt in 1200. Others were built in High Gothic style for the mainworks: nave, transept, choir and first floor of the lantern tower in the 13th century; side chapels, lady chapel and side doorways in the 14th century. Some windows are still decorated with stained glass of the 13th century, famous because of a special cobalt blue colour, known as the blue from Chartres. The north transept end commenced in 1280.

The cathedral has had a strong musical tradition since the Middle Ages. Its choir was famous up to the French Revolution for singing from memory. The first major organist to work here was Jean Titelouze, the so-called father of the French organ school. He occupied the post of the titular organist in 1588–1633. Around 1600 in collaboration with the famous Franco-Flemish organ builder Crespin Carlier, Titelouze transformed the organ of the cathedral to one of the best instruments in France. Some 80 years later the legendary organ builder Robert Clicquot restored and enhanced the instrument; organists who played the new organ included distinguished composers such as Jacques Boyvin (in 1674–1706), and François d'Agincourt (1706–1758). New organs were built by Merklin & Schütze (1858–60) and, after World War II, by Jacquot-Lavergne.

The most famous paintings of the cathedral were done by the Impressionist artist Claude Monet, who produced a series of paintings of the building showing the same scene at different times of the day and in different weather conditions. Two paintings are in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; one is in the Getty Center in Los Angeles; one is in the National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade; one is at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts; one is in a museum of Cologne; one is in the Rouen fine art museum; and five are in the musée d'Orsay in Paris. The estimated value of one painting is over $40 million. Other painters inspired by the building included John Ruskin, who selected it as an example of good architecture in The Seven Lamps of Architecture, and Roy Lichtenstein, who produced a series of pictures representing the cathedral's front. Mae Babitz, known for illustrations of the Watts Towers and Victorian era buildings in Los Angeles, illustrated the Cathedral in the 1960s. Those works are held in the UCLA library Special Collections.

In literature, Gustave Flaubert was inspired by the stained glass windows of St. Julian and the bas-relief of Salome, and based two of his Three Tales on them. Joris-Karl Huysmans wrote La Cathédrale, a novel based on an intensive examination of the building. Willa Cather sets a key scene in the development of the protagonist Claude Wheeler of One of Ours in the cathedral.

The Cathedral houses a tomb containing the heart of Richard the Lionheart. His bowels were probably buried within the church of the Château of Châlus-Chabrol in the Limousin. It was from the walls of the Château of Châlus-Chabrol that the crossbow bolt was fired, which led to his death once the wound became septic. His corporeal remains were buried next to his father at Fontevraud Abbey near Chinon and Saumur, France. Richard's effigy is on top of the tomb, and his name is inscribed in Latin on the side.

Places to see in ( Limoges - France ) Cathedrale St Etienne

Limoges Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in Limoges, France. It is a national monument and the seat of the Bishop of Limoges. The cathedral is in the Gothic, Renaissance and Romanesque architectural styles. The construction of the church began in 1273 and finished only in 1888, when the nave was connected to the belltower. It is noted for its Renaissance rood screen built in 1534, and for the fine, partly octagonal, bell tower.

The main artistic works in the cathedral are its Renaissance rood screen, now moved to the western end of the nave and the tomb of the bishop Jean de Langeac, with sculpted scenes of the Apocalypse. The cathedral contains two Renaissance works of great quality: a loft custom made by Bishop John Langeac, and the tomb of this bishop on which are carved scenes of the Apocalypse, inspired by Dürer.

The walls of Romanesque crypt have beautiful frescoes representing Christ in glory. Some medieval paintings are still visible in some chapels (including representatives of angelic musicians) but almost all are frescoes of the 19th century. The Cathedral of Limoges has two organs. Hauptwerk, which was inaugurated by Gonzalez in 1963 and the Choir organ, installed in 1850.
