Places to see in ( Caterham - UK )

Places to see in ( Caterham - UK )

Caterham is a town in the Tandridge District of Surrey, England. The town is administratively divided into two: Caterham on the Hill, and Caterham Valley, which includes the main town centre in the middle of a dry valley but rises to equal heights to the south. The town lies close to the A22, 21 miles (34 km) from Guildford and 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Croydon, in an upper valley cleft into the dip slope of the North Downs. Caterham on the Hill is above the valley to the west. Due to its proximity to London, Caterham is a commuter town, with small-to-medium-sized businesses of its own but relatively few business/industrial parks. It has a significant area of retail and restaurants in Caterham Valley as well as pubs dotted throughout.

Caterham's church of St Lawrence is of Norman construction and retains a rector as its incumbent. In the reign of King John, Roger son of Everard de Gaist gave this including its church lands to the monastery of Waltham Holy Cross. Everard's grandfather was Geoffery of Caterham who gave land to his son in the 12th century. This monastery ran the glebe as a manor, receiving a grant of free warren in their demesne lands of Caterham in 1253; holding it until the dissolution of the monasteries.

The North Downs Way, a National trail popular with walkers, passes very close to the town and is readily accessible from either Harestone Valley Road or Tupwood Lane, the Celtic hillfort promontory of the Downs mentioned above, The Cardinal's Cap, and Fosterdown or Pilgrims' Fort, a London Defensive Fort at the top of part of the ridge forming Godstone Hill, in Caterham Valley.

Before 1889 Caterham was the most eastern market town of a Surrey that stretched north to Southwark. North eastern parts of the county were absorbed gradually, in part by the County of London in 1889 (to South Norwood and Wimbledon which as a result have London Postcodes) and then to towns and villages within the present boundaries that form Greater London in 1965. From 1885 Oxted and Godstone developed from villages to towns. Tandridge District formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by the merger of Caterham and Warlingham urban district along with Godstone Rural District.

Caterham is 21 miles (34 km) from the county town of Guildford and 15.5 miles (24.9 km) south of London. Caterham on the Hill is located on a considerable area of upland extending north past adjoining Kenley Aerodrome to Kenley and Hartley Hill in Reedham. This elevated area carries on west until Hooley/Old Merstham and forms a very narrow, fairly steep ridge south of Caterham Valley's centre; east of the centre of Caterham Valley are marginally higher rolling pastures of the North Downs on top of a more crevassed smaller mass of upland which forms the village of Woldingham followed by a much larger area of upland stretching from Biggin Hill to Downe and Knockholt, Kent.

Places to see in ( Carshalton - UK )

Places to see in ( Carshalton - UK )

Carshalton is a suburb of London in the London Borough of Sutton, England. Part of Surrey until 1965, it is located 9.9 miles south-southwest of Charing Cross, situated in the valley of the River Wandle, one of the sources of which is Carshalton Ponds in the centre of the village. Carshalton is centred 1.2 miles (1.9 km) east of the town centre of Sutton.

Carshalton consists of a number of neighbourhoods. The main focal point, Carshalton Village, is visually scenic and picturesque. At its centre it has two adjoining ponds, which are overlooked by the Grade II listed All Saints Church on the south side and the Victorian Grove Park on the north side. The Grade II listed Honeywood Museum sits on the west side, a few yards from the water. There are a number of other listed buildings, as well as three conservation areas, including one in the village. In addition to Honeywood Museum, there are several other cultural features in Carshalton, including the Charles Cryer Theatre and an art gallery in Oaks Park. It is also home to the Sutton Ecology Centre, and every year an environmental fair is held in Carshalton Park to the south of the village.

Carshalton is part of the Carshalton and Wallington parliamentary constituency formed in 1983. Tom Brake (Liberal Democrat) has been its MP since 1997. A majority of the population of Carshalton is in the ABC1 social group. To the south of the area now known as Carshalton, remains of artefacts dating from the Neolithic to the Iron Age have been found, suggesting that this was an early place of habitation.

Central Carshalton, around the ponds and High Street, retains a village character, although the busy A232 runs through the area. There are a number of buildings and open spaces protected by the Carshalton Village Conservation Area. given the status by the London Borough of Sutton. In 1993 its boundary was extended to include parts of Mill Lane and parts of The Square and Talbot Road, containing the All Saints Church Rectory. The Conservation Area contains many of the Listed and Locally Listed Buildings which contribute to the historical significance of the area, and is widely considered to contain some of the finest historical architecture and road layout within the Borough. An example is Stone Court, an early 19th-century building with a gate house, situated on the northern edge of Grove Park. The Sun public house, is a fine example of Victorian decorative brickwork, and makes a positive contribution to the Conservation Area.

The Conservation Area also comprises open parkland of historical importance, including the grounds of Carshalton House Estate (which contains St. Philomena’s Catholic School, St Mary’s Junior School, St Mary’s Infants School and the Water Tower) and The Grove Park (which contains The Grove). Other conservation areas in Carshalton are the Wrythe Green Conservation Area and the Park Hill Conservation Area.

The Grade II listed Anglican parish church of All Saints is located at the west end of Carshalton High Street, opposite Carshalton Ponds. Constructed in 1685, Strawberry Lodge is one of Carshalton's oldest buildings. It was built by Josias Dewye. There are two historic lavender fields. One, at Oaks Way, Carshalton Beeches is a not-for-profit community project that manages three acres of lavender.

The Grade II* listed Water Tower (or Bagnio as it was known at the time) was built in the early 18th century, primarily to house a water driven pump supplying water to Carshalton House (now St Philomena's School) and the fountains in its gardens. Little Holland House in Carshalton Beeches was the home of the artist and designer Frank Dickinson. Honeywood is a large Grade II listed house at the western end of the picturesque Carshalton Ponds. At its earliest, it dates from the 17th century but it has been much extended and restored since.

The present day Carshalton Park is situated south of the High Street, in the area bounded by Ruskin Road, Ashcombe Road and Woodstock Road. Grove Park, closest to the village centre, is the best example of a Victorian park in the Borough. Oaks Park is a large park landscaped in a generally naturalistic style, providing downland walks.

BEST HIKING ROUTE : LEITH HILL WALK, BEST DAY TRIPS FROM LONDON

Recorded on 17 Apeil 2021
Saturday, 3pm, 15°C

Thank you for supporting my Channel of city walking, real nature sounds, UK travelling. Please subscribe to this channel and share it with your friends

If you’re after some ridiculously beautiful views then this is the hike for you. Climbing to the highest point in the south east, you will go through green meadows and past gorgeous old cottages. On a clear day from the top of the tower you can see the clock face on Big Ben and the English Channel.

Croydon, Coulsdon & High Speed One

Action from East Croydon & Coulsdon (mainly to cover the Class 460s before their transfer to S.W.T, and then over to HS1 to cover the outstanding high speed line in Kent.

Time Out Country Walks, Book 2, Walk 15b, Riddlesdown to Coulsdon South.25/11/12.

This is another walk that starts and ends in Zone 6, yet is pleasantly rural, including some suitably muddy stretches!
Around 10.5 miles long, the walk crosses Kenley Common and Coulsdon Common, where the recommended lunch time pubs can be found, albeit rather early in the walk. There are some fine views from a short stretch of the North Downs Way before this walker pauses for a later lunch in the pleasant Chaldon church.
Thereafter, there's more muddy fields, with fine views of Happy Valley, before arriving at the picturesque Farthing Downs. South Coulsdon, or in this case, Coulsdon Town (a train was cancelled, and the latter station is only 10 minutes further away) station is reached a short while later.
Once again, a very pleasant zone 6 walk, ideal when time is at a premium.
(Unusually, the church at Chaldon serves tea and cakes during the winter on Sundays between 2.30 and 4, so is ideally positioned for a tea stop. Great home-cooking!).
