Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, lit. 'the Day of the Festival of Patrick'), is a religious and cultural holiday held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick ( c. 385 – c. 461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.
St. Patrick's Day was originally celebrated in Ireland with religious services and feasts in honour of St. Patrick, one of Ireland's patron saints. When Irish immigrants brought St. Patrick's Day traditions to the United States, the day evolved into a secular celebration of Irish culture.
Each year, thousands of Irish Americans gather with their loved ones on St. Patrick's Day to share a “traditional” meal of corned beef and cabbage. Though cabbage has long been an Irish food, corned beef only began to be associated with St. Patrick's Day at the turn of the 20th century.
One of the reasons we wear green on St. Patrick's Day is because of Ireland's nickname, The Emerald Isle. The green stripe in the Irish flag also played a role.
