The blue of the sea and the green of the mountains are the colors that characterize the landscape of Cantabria in northern Spain. The autonomous community of Cantabria lies between the Basque Country to the east and Asturias to the west on the northern Spanish coast. One of the main attractions of Cantabria is the Cantabrian coast, the Costa de Cantabria. This section of the Spanish north coast is divided into picturesque bays, cliffs and long estuaries. On the hills along the coast, pastures alternate with forests and fallow land. On the coast, there are interesting coastal and port towns such as Castro Urdiales, Santander, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera. The medieval town of Santillana del Mar, located inland to the west of Santander, is one of the most beautiful villages not only in Cantabria, but also in the whole of Spain. To the south rise the mountains of the Cantabrian Cordillera, whose highest peaks mark the border with the neighboring region of Castile and Leon in many parts. Numerous rivers have carved valleys from the heights of the Cantabrian Mountains down to the sea. One example is the picturesque valley that stretches north-south from the Cantabrian coast up into the Cantabrian Mountains, the Valle de Cabuérniga. Llegamos al final de una etapa en la que hemos recorrido el territorio de punta a punta con el fin de buscar rincones no tan conocidos y otros mostrándolos desde otra perspectiva singular.
Este primer top Valles Pasiegos está hecho de 10 propuestas para hacer en una visita a la comarca, hay muchos lugares más que conocer que os mostraremos en otras selecciones.
1. Mirador de Covalruyo. Desde este mirador las magníficas extensiones del valle glaciar del Miera estremecen y la soledad que se siente nos deja sin respiración. Una propuesta que no te dejará indiferente.
2. Hayal de la Zamina. En la zona alta del Valle del Miera, en el bonito barrio de la Concha, se ha conservado hasta nuestros días un bello bosque de hayas entre grandes rocas de piedra caliza. Un entorno natural de gran valor ecológico.
3. Liérganes. La localidad de Liérganes, junto al río Miera, es sin duda una de las poblaciones más bellas de Cantabria. Se encuentra también catalogado como uno de los pueblos más bonitos de España. Con una arquitectura medieval sobresaliente también posee numerosos palacios y casonas indianas. Un imprescindible de Valles Pasiegos.
4. Nacimiento del Pisueña. Una de las rutas de montaña más atractivas de Valles Pasiegos con los espectaculares Picones de Sopeña vigilantes en todo momento. El curso del río Pisueña en su nacimiento se encuentra rodeado de bosques de robles y hayas con verdes pastos y numerosas cabañas pasiegas de gran belleza.
5. Puerto de la Braguía. Un pequeño puerto de montaña que une las localidades de Selaya con Vega de Pas. Uno de los mejores lugares para disfrutar del coloso Castro Valnera que permanece nevado casi todo el invierno. Un poco más abajo del puerto hay un hermoso mirador con zonas de esparcimiento y descanso.
6. Hayal de Aloños. Si hay un bosque mágico en Valles Pasiegos es este hayedo en la cabecera del bonito pueblo de Aloños. Sus hayas desmochadas crean un paisaje espectacular. Sus viejos árboles tienen formas sorprendentes que alimentan a la imaginación.
7. Colegiata de Castañeda. Cantabria tiene cuatro colegiatas románicas imperdibles. En Valles Pasiegos hay una de esas joyas del románico. La colegiata de la Santa Cruz de Castañeda es venerada desde hace siglos por poseer una pequeña parte de la cruz de Cristo.
8. Cuevas del Monte Castillo. Conjunto de cuevas con arte rupestre Patrimonio de la Humanidad con algunas de las pinturas más antiguas que se conocen. La cueva del Castillo y las Monedas están abiertas al público.
9. Vía verde del Pas. Junto al río Pas encontramos una vía verde pavimentada perfecta para pasear, correr o andar en bicicleta que une las localidades de Vargas, pasando por Puente Viesgo, Santiurde de Toranzo, Corvera de Toranzo, Ontaneda y finaliza en el majestuoso parque de Alceda.

Basque Traditional Festival in Urdax Urdazubi - Iron Day in Urdax Navarre Province Spain
Each year, the Navarre Basque village of Urdax/Urdazubi revives an old tradition during the iron Day. After a short journey by boat, the iron from Biscay was transported in an ox-drawn cart to the monastery. Musicians accompanied the procession. Once at the monastery, under the watchful eye of the locals, the abbot of the monastery and the merchants negotiated a price, which, after some hard bargaining, ended in a deal: the iron was to stay in Urdax. The complete process is revived during the Iron Day, at the beginning of August. In 2023, it was on the 5th of August. There was a traditional market and iron artisans from 10am to 2pm. The ox cart left its place, going through the village to the monastery at 12. Zikiro - lamb barbecue - was cooked and shared for lunch. A concert ended the festivities at 5pm.
This video was shot at the place the oxes are kept before the procession. The oxes were already decorated and watched by their keepers. The musicians arrived around 12 and the procession left around 12:30.

Castro Urdiales is a seaport of northern Spain, in the autonomous community of Cantabria, situated on the Bay of Biscay. Castro Urdiales is a modern town, although its castle and the Gothic-style parish church of Santa María de la Asunción, date from the Middle Ages. Its chief industries are tourism, fishing, and the preservation of fish, especially sardines and anchovies, in oil.
The Lolin and La Castreña anchovy canning factories serve as a reminder of the town's closeness to this industry and its proximity to the sea. Although the number of people registered in the town is around 32,000, the summer population can double or even triple this figure. The town is popular because of its beaches and scenic harbor.
Castro Urdiales was originally called Portus Amanum, and was the chief city of the Autrigones. In AD 74 a Roman colony was established under the name Flaviobriga, during the reign of emperor Vespasian. It was most likely established to mine the abundant iron in the area. In 1163 the town of Castro Urdiales received its municipal charter. It lay at the western tip of the coastline of Navarre until 1200, when the kingdom was invaded by Alfonso VIII of Castile.
Castro Urdiales benefited much from its location at a crossroads in the trade between northern Europe and Castile. It remained in Biscay until 1476 at least, but it is not cited in the seigneury's assemblies thereafter. Until the 18th century, the town recurrently attempted a reincorporation to Biscay (attested in 1799), but its attempts were met with the frontal refusal of Bilbao on account that it could tip the scale against its own trade balance.
The monument complex of Castro Urdiales, also known as Puebla Vieja, has medieval origins and is located near the sea. It was declared a Conjunto histórico in 1978. The Church of Santa María de la Asunción is in Gothic style. Built under the protection of King Alfonso VIII of Castile in the 13th century (though it was finished in the 15th century), it is a basilica church with three naves. In the interior are the images of the White Virgin and the Reclining Christ, and three Gothic carvings of the Magi. It was declared a National Monument in 1931.
The Castle of Santa Ana is located near the port and the church of Santa María de la Asunción. In modern times it housed a lighthouse. Palace, castle-observatory and Ocharan gardens, protected since 1985. The castle-observatory, dating back to 1914 and designed by local architect Eladio Laredo, is in neo-Gothic style. The Ocharan Palace, or Toki-Eder, was built in 1901, also by the local architect Eladio Laredo. It is an eclectic-style building, with a portico of columns and other elements of Greek taste, and with a multicolored tile frieze designed by Daniel Zuloaga.
Cave of El Cuco, west of the town. It houses rock carvings and paintings from the Upper Paleolithic period, which depict animals such as deers, goats and horses. Remains of Flavióbriga and the medieval village, protected since 1996. The Flavióbriga archaeological site is under the Old town, two meters deep. The Guadalest Valley, also known as the 'Eagle's Nest' is situated at about 25kms from Benidorm. The spectacular tourist spot can be reached after a refreshing 1hr drive from Alicante. The drive offers stunning views of the mountain scenery and as you pass the village of Polop, the winding rustic roads give the feel of the bygone era.
In the ancient times Guadalest was originally an Islamic country, and was of great military importance. The ancient ruins and castles can be seen even in the present times despite having been destroyed by the battles and natural disasters.
The ‘Guadalest castle’ and the white bell tower of ‘Penon de la Alcala’ are two of the must see monuments there. The castle was so secure that in order to reach it, one has to pass through a 15ft long tunnel, and that too by foot. The village has retained its old world charm with its quaint cobbled streets, a village square and an ancient Jailhouse.
The population of this place is only about 200 residents, and the major occupation of these people is tourism related jobs. There are ample opportunities of shopping as the streets are filled with shops selling crafts, souvenirs and local items such as wine and honey. The entire Guadalest trip can be covered within a day, and you can be back to your hotels by dinner time.
