We were delighted when we chose to take the gravel back road from Ladybrand to Clocolan. Along the way, we came across the intriguing Modderpoort Railway junction which was clearly a hive of activity back in the day, judging by the number of railway lines and houses. Continuing our journey, we encountered roadworks as we entered the town. We marvelled at the many beautiful gabled and sandstone buildings and discovered numerous points of interest such as the showgrounds and the old station. Once a mule track, now a thrilling mountain pass between the Sani Pass Border Post in South Africa and the Lesotho Border Post. The elevation gains are incredible reaching 2873m. At this altitude, the views are spectacular. Traversing the famous Sani Pass crossing river beds and tackling loose rocky terrain, the Suzuki Jimny 5 Dorr handled the challenges in 4H most of the timewithout breaking a sweat. 4L was only needed on some of the steep rocky switch backs towards the top of Sani Pass.

Both of us were eagerly anticipating our visit to Ladybrand. Upon arrival in the afternoon, we wasted no time and immediately began exploring the town. Our attention was quickly drawn to the plethora of sandstone buildings that adorned the streets. Among our discoveries were a number of churches and the station. Although no longer operational, its architectural charm remained intact. By sheer luck, we stumbled upon two long-standing war memorials, adding unexpected depth to our experience. Imla - Luxury Guest Farm - Clocolan
The guest farm is a working farm, Waterfall, within the IMLA Farm Group, on land which is part of Marabeng Mountain, according to the Sesotho-speaking locals. A grand sandstone house, dating from the late 1800s, has been beautifully restored and expanded to a modern guest house.
Rooms have all been uniquely finished. Various accommodation options are available for single guests, couples, families and groups. Dinner, bed and breakfast or self-catering, the latter available in one unit. Our en suite rooms boast fire places for red or glühwein winter’s evenings.
Use IMLA Guest Farm as the ideal base from which to explore endless Eastern Free State landscapes, roads, trails via vehicle, bicycle, on foot & on horseback. Drink it all in from the boma under the Waterfall Tree.
Early morning veld freshness, birdsong, relaxing and active days, ending in unforgettable gatherings around the fire, under sandstone starry night skies.
Lesotho Highlands Tour 5th February 2018
First day of 3-day road trip through Lesotho's Maluti Mountains. At midday we left from Maseru north to Leribe & lunched at northern town of Butha-Buthe before continuing inland to climb into mountains at 2,820m high Moteng Pass. From there we traversed the 3,000 metre high 46kms long Roof of Africa road past the Afriski mountain resort & Letseng Diamond Mine before descending into the deep valleys to small town of Mapholaneng, and further on east towards Mokhotlong. The highway descends down to a river crossing of the great Senqu River of Lesotho - where it meets other great rivers in a confluence basin of gorges before heading south then west into South Africa to become the Orange (Gariep) River. After a brief visit to Mokhotlong we turned back & continued south along the recently constructed A31 highway following the Sehonghong River Valley until a final climb over the 3,240 metre high Koti-Sephola Pass & down to Sani Flats. A short 10km drive further on saw our arrival at Sani Mountain Lodge by 8pm, where we had a meal & stayed overnight at the nearby backpackers hostel.
The Gariep Dam, South Africa's Inland Sea.
The Gariep dam is one of South Africa's largest dams. Travelling at 100km/hr, it takes almost an hour to drive past it. Known as SA's Inland Sea, it was constructed on the Orange river to supply water to the Fish river irrigation scheme, which it supplies via an 80km tunnel towards the east, into a totally different catchment area. This video takes you over the dam wall, and also across a narrow bridge below the wall as well. Enjoy!
Two Brothers Trip of South Africa DAY 10
Day 10 takes us from Aliwal North to Clarens. Large sections of the road were badly damaged and for about 30km close to Clocolan we had to slow down to a slow pace to dodge the potholes. The stop at The Cabin Farm Stall was worth it and the atmosphere was great. Great coffee too. Our overnight stop was in shipping container rooms and our host the filmmaker Frank Perrold.
