TRIP REPORT | RYANAIR| BOEING B737-800| Rome/Ciampino to Bucharest Otopeni | New Sky Interior
Hi Guys!
This time I'll be flying to Bucharest Otopeni airport by Ryanair.
Even though Ryan has begun to fly from Fiumicino airport,
her main base in Rome is still Ciampino, G.B. Pastine airport.
So the most of FR destinations are reachable departing from this place.
Wizzair also has a base in CIA and offers among others regular flights to OTP. Today I chose Ryan because scheduled departure was earlier than Wizz and I thought it was a safer solution as I had a (self)connection flight in Bucharest.
Some quick info about CIA.
Ciampino is the oldest airport in Rome (inaugurated in 1916) and it has been Rome hub till 1961 when Fiumicino opened. Then, of course, it experienced a fall of traffic and was allocated to handle especially charter and general aviation flights. In the early 2000's low-cost carriers ( in particular Ryanair and Easyjet ) discovered and chose it as their main base in Rome, not least for its position.
Located in the Southern area of the city at the bottom of Castelli Romani this facility is very close to Rome downtown which makes many people consider it similar to a city airport.
Since many years a public debate occurs concerning the option to close the airport to commercial flights due to noise pollution issues.
In 2016 about 5.300.000 passengers flew from Ciampino.
What's my rating about Ciampino airport?
Well, I think that the airport main issue is that facilities are undersized compared to passengers flow. I never had extreme delays at security checks but boarding areas are really too crowded by me.
