In this episode, we head to the North Queensland town of Charters Towers in order to discover the bright, shiny secrets lying just below its surface and try to figure out exactly what draws people to such an arid, uninviting hellhole.

Onto charters towers it was great to get to a Big4 resort caravan park with pool, playground, and jumping pillow; it was heaven after a month in the outback! The temperature dropped 10 degrees as we got closer to the coast.
We explored the WWII Bunkers on towers hill, one of them had audio & video displays which was educational.
We got our first shop in a real supermarket in 3 weeks, I could have hugged Woolworths! Getting fresh food was harder than I remember from previous trips out here, fruit was mostly over ripe and expensive with 1 mango going for $18! Bread was also hard to come by taking days for stock to get replaced. The coast has it good I tell you!

A QUICK TOUR OF CHARTERS TOWERS
A LOOK AT CHARTERS TOWERS QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA.
Big Bend, Burdekin River, North of Charters Towers
Ever been to Big Bend? Camping is permitted, however there are no designated camping spots and no facilities. It's a popular 4WD full bush camping located right on the banks of the Burdekin River with plenty of places to camp and fish. There are numerous tracks around the area worth exploring. Although you don't need to use 4WD to get there, you do require a high clearance vehicle. A standard height ute will suffice without any issues although you will have to choose your line wisely.

Charters Towers Street Parade
Held during the 10 Days in the Towers Festival the annual street parade gave a good indication of the health of this confident and friendly Queensland country town. Hundreds of children took part and the atmosphere was really buzzing with many adults going onto the annual country music festival events later that day. There is a solid core of visitors who come each year for the whole 10 days, mostly in the Grey Nomad category, but loads of locals are involved and many musos & their families attend to take part in the country music talent quests over two separate weekends.
