Yates Center, Kansas, is known as the Hay Capital of the World. It also has one of the best town squares you'll see! A courthouse from 1899 surrounded by historic buildings and red brick make for a terrific places to explore. There are many other things scattered throughout the town as well. I definitely enjoyed visiting the county seat of Woodson County!

Our city was named after Octave Chanute, a noted engineer who designed railroads throughout the United States. He also built the first bridge over the Missouri River at Kansas City.
He was a mentor and friend to Wilbur and Orville Wright. His book, “Progress In Flying Machines” (1894), was a major reference for them.
This sculpture represents the first controlled and powered flight by the Wrights and the first for mankind. It happened on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, a windswept island off North Carolina. “

Woodson County, Kansas, is located in the southeastern part of the state and was created 6 years before Kansas became an official state. It has lost almost 70% of it's population from it's peak over 100 years ago and we explore around the county to find out why. Part 1 is focused mainly on the eastern half of Woodson County and we find some really interesting places! I counted about 10 ghost towns and a bunch of unique cemeteries.

Everyone wanted to see some of our earlier videos/stills prior to getting our GoPro, so by request this is a montage of several flights we took to; Shawnee, OK. Pratt, KS. Ellsworth, KS. Kansas City KS. Chanute, KS. Camden, AR. Pittsburg, KS. and an odd trip to Lucas, KS. to tour the;
Garden of Eden.
Most of these flights were to build cross-country hours for my Instrument Rating.
As usual, we ate some great food, but even better company!

Driving around rural small town, Humboldt, Kansas in Allen County.
....Humboldt was the Allen county seat for seven years, from 1858 until 1865, when Iola became the seat. Humboldt won two contentious legislative elections to become the seat in 1858 and 1860, but another election in 1865 at the end of the American Civil War resulted in the re-location of the county seat to Iola. The legitimacy of this election was questioned by Humboldt residents due to low turnout arising from soldiers fighting the War. ......
.....After the second raid the threats to Humboldt's safety were taken very seriously. At times the town had local militia units operating and most of the rest of the Civil War the town had Army troops stationed there. Sometimes the military post there was called Post Humboldt. A blockhouse was partially constructed at 514 S. 3rd Street. This was used by the local militia as its headquarters and as a recruiting office.[1.........

Lenexa /lɪˈnɛksə/ is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is the 8th most populated city in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and 9th most populated of Kansas.[5] As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 57,434.[2] It is the birthplace of Garmin and the regional headquarters of Kiewit Construction.[6][7] It is bordered by the cities of Shawnee to the north, Overland Park to the east, De Soto to the west and Olathe to the south.
Twelve years before the town of Lenexa was platted, James Butler Hickok staked a claim on 160 acres (65 ha) at what is now the corner of 83rd and Clare Road.[8] Filed in 1857, the claim was not far from the Kansas River, and was 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Westport, Missouri, and the start of the Santa Fe Trail. The trail meandered through this area on its way to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
On March 22, 1858, Hickok was elected one of the first four constables of nearby Monticello Township. Later, Hickok became a scout for the Free-State Army, a sharpshooter and eventually, one of the most famous folk heroes of the American West, Wild Bill Hickok.
At about the same time as Hickok filed his claim, a census of the Shawnee Indians living in the area was being taken, and one of the residents listed was Na-Nex-Se Blackhoof. She was the widow of Chief Blackhoof, the second signer of the 1854 treaty that ceded 1,600,000 acres (650,000 ha) of the Kansas Shawnee Indian reservation to the United States government.
In 1865, the Kansas and Neosho Valley Railroad was organized to take advantage of favorable new land laws. It later changed its name to Missouri River, Ft. Scott and Gulf Railroad, and in 1869 purchased a right-of-way from C.A. Bradshaw in the area that is now Lenexa, with the stipulation that a depot be built on the property.
Bradshaw also sold 10.5 acres (4.2 ha) to Octave Chanute, a railroad civil engineer, who platted the town in 1869. Legend states that the first town name proposed was Bradshaw, but Bradshaw modestly refused and the name Lenexa, a derivation of the name Na-Nex-Se, the name of Shawnee Chief Thomas Blackhoof's wife, was adopted.
