Royal Temple - Wat Chaiyo - Ang Thong Thailand 2022
Wat Chaiyo or Wat Ket Chaiyo was built during the Ayutthaya Period. It became important during the reign of King Rama IV. The venerable Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phromrangsi) of Wat Rakhang Khositaram built the large Buddha image in a subduing Mara gesture and placed it outdoors. However, the image collapsed soon after construction. He re-built it in the same pose but smaller, covered it in plaster and without gold leaf. As the image could be seen from far, the villagers called it Luangpho To (meaning huge image). Further temple restoration during the reign of King Rama V the Buddha image collapsed again. The King ordered the renovation of the image with steel bars inside. The new image was covered in gold leaf and monks’ robes and was given the new name by King Rama V the Great “Phra Maha Phutthaphim”. A new main chapel was constructed to house the image. Upon completion, King Rama V the Great established the temple as one of the royal temples.
To pay respect to Luangpho To, you need a bunch of flowers, incense and a candle. People living in Ang Thong believe that a sinful person will never have the chance to pay respect to the sacred Luangpho To as he/she will feel that the image will collapse on him/her. The holy water from the temple is also believed to be able to cure any sickness. A story spread among the villagers said that people saw Luangpho To in their dreams making them become faithful to him. This story aligned with the belief of Buddhists that the Buddha image represents the Lord Buddha. Worship of it will make people want to do good deeds. The practice of the basic Buddhist principles along with the worship of the Buddha image will make one’s life forever happy.
When visiting Wat Chaiyo, there are three must-see sites. The first is Phra Ubosot, which extends from the front part of the chapel and is constructed in the beautiful traditional period Thai style of King Rama V. Inside are beautiful mural paintings depicting the life of the Lord Buddha and painted by craftsmen living in the same period. Another is the main chapel constructed to keep Phra Maha Phutthaphim, which is located by the Chao Phraya River.
The temple is very nice and rarely visited by tourists. I was very lucky to be able stop by and look around.

Wat Khian - Historic Ayutthaya Murals - Ang Thong Thailand 2023
Ang Thong province is one of the central provinces of Thailand. It is about 100 km from Bangkok, so you can take a day trip here from the capital. This province has a lot of tourist attractions, historical and cultural places.
There are more than 200 beautiful temples in this province, Wat Chaiyo Worawihan, Wat Khun Inthapramun, Wat Pa Mok Worawihan, Wat Tonson, Wat Mahanam, Wat Thasutthawat, Wat Siroi, Wat Khian and, Wat Muang are among the best temples to visit.
The province is mostly rural with many of its inhabitants planting rice. It is possible to get up to 3 rice harvests a year with Jasmine rice being the main cash crop. This area misses most of the tourists so if you want to experience Thailand away from the crowds this is the place to come.
Wat Khian is a historic temple. It’s very small with one monk being in residence. The highlight is the Ayutthaya era murals that are painted on the inside of the ordination hall. In order to view them you need to have it opened during working hours by the monk or caretaker of the temple. It’s well worth a stop if you are interested in thai history.
The lecture by Chris Baker is very interesting and he talks about this temple. Here is a link to it.

Wat Chedi Ai Khai (Wat JD) Nakhon Si Thammarat Thailand - The Chicken Temple
We start out the video with a quick tour of the old city wall of Nakhon Si Thammarat. After the city wall we travel by accident to a country temple with the name of Wat Chedi but it’s the wrong one. After exploring it for a bit we travel north to the correct temple. Wat Chedi is famous in the area and is also known as the chicken temple. I show you why in the video.
Nakhon Si Thammarat was a fortified city, surrounded by ramparts. The first city wall was built during the reign of Phra Chao Sithamma Sokarat during the founding of the city on Had Saai Kaew. He built the rampart surrounded by a moat. It is assumed that the wall and many parts of the city have been renovated several times, the last being in the 17th century. At the time of King Narai Maharat, French engineers and architects traveled to the city and designed the walls in the form of a castle, as you can clearly see. During the reign of King Rama II the wall was again renovated.
Wat Chedi Ai Khai, which I’ve used in the title. But it’s also known as Ta Khai Wat Chedi, or, according to the many signs directing you to the place, just Wat Chedi or Wat JD (JD sounds like Chedi) or even Wat Chedi Ikai (because Ikai sounds like Ai Khai.) Most people though, know it as The Chicken Wat.
It allegedly dates back more than a thousand years. A famous monk named Luang Phu Thuad was travelling south from Ayutthaya. That’s more than 1.000 KM away. He had with him a young disciple, nine or ten years old, named Ai Khai. When they arrived at the area of the present wat, they found “many treasures.” The young boy was instructed to stay there to look after the treasures.
There’s no mention of what happened to the place, the boy or the treasures, until the building, by now derelict, was rediscovered in 1957. After that, anyone who tried to sleep inside the ubosot, the main prayer hall was unable to unless they had asked for permission from the ghost of Ai Khai. Supposedly anyone trying to sleep would see an image of the boy bashing their heads and pulling their legs.
In 1983 Pho Than Thoem, who was the abbot of Wat Chedi at the time, decided that people should give money to Ai Khai, to help redevelop the wat. People come in the thousands every day, from all over Thailand and Malaysia. They pray to a “thousand year old” small statue of Ai Khai, who is dressed in modern clothes and dark glasses and they donate money.
Why would they do that? Because they believe the young boy, or his ghost, will solve their financial problems. Starting a new business? Pray to Ai Khai. It’s an interesting story and temple and worth a visit. I enjoyed my time here.

Wat Phra Nang Sang - Phuket’s Oldest Temple - Thailand 2022
Wat Phra Nang Sang was built more than 200 years ago and was originally known as Wat Takian and is the oldest Thai temple in Phuket. This temple was built when Thalang was the main city of Phuket Island and even was the scene of a battlefield during the Burma war in 1785.
Everything is designed with mixed Chinese and Thai mythology influences. The legend goes that Lady Luad Khao, the spouse of the ruler of Nakhon Si Thammarat, was condemned to death for having a love affair. Before the execution, she asked the last favor to travel to Sri Lanka to pay last respect to the relics of Lord Buddha. She built this temple when she returned, hence Wat Phra Nang Sang, which means ‘built by the Royal Lady’. The story goes that when she was executed, her blood was white, and she became known as Phra Nang Luad Khao, the lady with white blood.
The most important elements in Wat Phra Nang Sang are three ancient Buddha images called Phra Nai Phung, meaning ‘abdomen Buddha image’ and Phra Sam Kasat ‘Three King Buddha image’, which are enshrined in the abdomen of another Buddha statue.
The origin and history of this temple is very interesting. It’s worth a little bit of your time if you are in the area.

Wat Choeng Tha - Ayutthaya Thailand - Temple of Many Names
Wat Choeng Tha - Wat of Many Names
Now a mere shadow of its 17th-century glory, Wat Choeng Tha was once situated in front of the royal boatyard, directly across the Lopburi River from the Royal Palace.
Probably established before the founding of Ayutthaya, the temple has had many different names. It didn’t become Wat Choeng Tha until King Rama IV renamed it in the mid 19th century. Wat Thin Tha (Water Grass Temple), was one of the many previous names it was know for over long history.
The centrepiece is a medium-size Khmer-style prang built in the early Ayutthaya period and adorned with damaged white-stucco standing Buddha images in the Halting of Evil posture, which were left behind when looters raided the crypt. West of the prang, you’ll find minor chedis along with an ancient ordination hall guarded by lion images.
The temple is relatively unknown by tourists and a visit here would be worth it for anyone that wants to learn more about the former capital. Located just to the north of the island, on the banks of the Lopburi River, it’s not difficult to find. It is well worth an hour or more of your time.

Beautiful Temple from the 1600’s - Wat Chulamanee - Samut Songkram Thailand 2022
This ancient Temple sits on the bank where the Amphawa Canal connects with the Phi Lok Canal. The temple was built in the Ayutthaya period during the late reign of King Prasatthong. It was constructed sometime between 1629–1656 in the Ayutthaya period of Thailand.
This ancient Temple sits on the Canal-side where the Amphawa Canal converges with the Phi Lok Canal. The temple was built in the Ayutthaya period during the late reign of King Prasatthong. It is likely that ThaoKaeophaluek (Noi), owner of the Bang Chang Market and an ancestor of the royal lineage of Bang Chang, commissioned the temple.
The back of the temple once contained the residence of KhunNak (or Queen Ammarinthramat of King Rama I) and KhunBunrot (Queen Si Suriyenthramat of King Rama II).
It is open daily from 8.30 am-4.30 pm.
The temple is very popular with the Thai people. When they come they buy a red flower to donate to one of the gods at the temple. It is believed that this is his favorite flower and by donating it to him it will bring good fortune.

Thailand’s 1st Primary School and Wat Mahannapharam - Bangkok Thailand
Wat Mahannapharam Worawihan or Wat Mahan, commonly called Wat Mahanop วัดมหรรณพ, is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok Thailand. The first state school for general public in Thailand was established at the temple in 1884.
Wat Mahannapharam Worawihan was constructed in the reign of King Rama III by Prince Annop, a son of Rama III. The construction began in 1850 with the king donating 80,000 baht. It was only completed in the reign of King Rama IV when the new king donated another 80,000 baht.
The name of the temple means the great abode of water, referring to the Sea of Samsara, the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth.
The first public school in Thailand was established at Wat Mahannapharam by the abbot of the temple after an instruction was issued by Rama V encouraging temples to set up new schools for common people in 1884. It was the beginning of mass education in Thailand. A statue of Rama V was later erected at the temple to mark the centenary of the founding of the school.
The main Buddha image in the ubosot is Luang Por Bunyarit หลวงพ่อบุญฤทธิ์, sculpted during the reign of Rama III in the Ayutthaya style.
The Buddha image in the wihan is Pra Ruang Thong Kam พระร่วงทองคำ, cast in the Sukhothai style. Pra Ruang is much older, dated back to Sukhothai period and made from 60 per cent gold.
The temple is near Khao San Road and a good stop for anyone that enjoys seeing the temple architecture or learning a little bit of the history of the area. It’s worth about an hour of your time to see.

05:17 Wat Chaiyo Worawihan
06:51 Wat Khun Inthapramun
07:09 Wat Muang
09:56 Wat Si Roi
10:16 Wat Khian
Wat Tha Sutthawat, on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, is an ancient temple dating to the early Ayutthaya period. Now under royal patronage, it features a serene compound shaded by tall trees. Monuments within honor King Naresuan the Great and King Ekathotsarot, with murals inside depicting Ang Thong's history, including Phra Maha Chanok.
Wat Pa Mok Worawihan, nestled by the Chao Phraya River, houses a revered reclining Buddha from the Sukhothai period. Saved from the river, it stands as a symbol of spiritual reverence. Visited by King Naresuan the Great, the temple has merged with Wat Talat, offering panoramic river views from the picturesque Wihan Khian. Located in Tambon Pa Mok, it welcomes all to its rich heritage and tranquil ambiance.
Wat Tonson, on the western banks of the Chao Phraya River, is home to Thailand's largest metal Buddha image, standing 18 meters tall. Dating back to around 1767, it underwent restoration in 1945 and is now a cherished landmark. Beyond its spiritual significance, it serves as a community hub, housing one of the region's largest fish fertilization centers. Located in Bang Kaeo Subdistrict, it invites visitors to experience its timeless beauty and spiritual tranquility amidst modern life.
Wat Mahanam, on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, spans 48,000 square meters in Chaiyaphum Subdistrict, Chaiyo District. Initially Intraram temple, it became Mahanam temple during King Rama V's reign. Serving nearby villages, it's a hub for ordination ceremonies, providing a convenient place for merit-making.
Wat Chaiyo Worawihan, or Wat Ket Chaiyo locally, is a revered royal monastery east of the Chao Phraya River in Ang Thong province. Established in 1757 and granted royal status in 1887, it holds a rich history. Its main attraction is the Phra Maha Phutthaphim, or Luang Po To, crafted during King Rama IV's reign. Originally Wat Chaiyo, it became a royal temple, symbolizing Thailand's spiritual heritage. Today, it offers visitors a glimpse into its cultural significance and serene ambiance.
Wat Khun Inthapramun, an ancient temple from the Sukhothai period, houses Thailand's largest reclining Buddha statue, spanning 50 meters. Despite a fire destroying its assembly hall, leaving the Buddha exposed for centuries, it remains a revered site visited by Thai monarchs. Legends surrounding Khun Inthapramun add intrigue to its rich history. Today, the temple attracts pilgrims seeking solace and connection to Thailand's cultural heritage.
Wat Muang, located in Mueang Wisetchan Subdistrict, is a testament to Thailand's cultural heritage. Believed to date back to the late Ayutthaya period, it underwent destruction during the Burmese invasion of 1767 before being restored. Under Phra Kru Wibul Achankun's guidance, the temple saw extensive renovation, including the construction of the world's largest Buddha image. Spanning 115,200 square meters, its grounds feature remarkable structures like the Ubosot surrounded by the world's largest lotus petals. With depictions of heavenly realms and historical events, Wat Muang serves as both a spiritual sanctuary and a gateway to Thailand's cultural history.
Wat Si Roi, the 'four hundreds' temple, on the western bank of the Noi River, honors Khun Rong Palat Chu and his sword-fighters who defended against a Burmese invasion in 1760. Today, it houses revered Buddha images, symbolizing bravery and sacrifice.
Wat Khian, near Wat Wiset Chai Chan, is famed for its ancient murals depicting the 10 incarnations of the Lord Buddha. Painted during the late Ayutthaya period, these artworks reflect the region's rich cultural heritage.
