We've spent a few weeks over a couple of trips to Ischia, read all the blogs, bought some guide books, (DEFINITELY buying the guidebook with the bus route map in it when you arrive), and learned a lot from trial and error and talking to locals. That's how we came up with the best things to do on the island of Ischia.

We've gone during the off-season and at the end of high season. This video is from the beginning of September. I would even suggest going in mid-September when everything seems to still be open, weather is great, and you'll have a bit fewer tourists. August is a tough month because, in Italy, it's when shops shut-down for the Italians to take a vacation. I'd avoid Italy in August as a general rule.

Ischia, also known as Isola d’Ischia, is a volcanic island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the city of Naples.

Here are some key details about this fascinating island:

Geography and Shape
Ischia is the largest of the Phlegrean Islands.
Its shape is roughly trapezoidal, measuring approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) from east to west and 7 kilometers (4 miles) from north to south.
The island boasts about 34 kilometers (21 miles) of coastline and covers a surface area of 46.3 square kilometers (17.9 square miles).
Ischia is almost entirely mountainous, with its highest peak being Mount Epomeo, standing at 788 meters (2,585 feet) above sea level.

Population and Density
Ischia is densely populated, with approximately 60,000 residents (more than 1,300 inhabitants per square kilometer).
The main comune on the island is simply named Ischia, and there are several other comuni, including Barano d’Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Forio, Lacco Ameno, and Serrara Fontana.

Volcanic Origins
Ischia’s formation is linked to volcanic activity.
It lies immediately southwest of the Campi Flegrei area on the western side of the Bay of Naples.
The eruption of the trachytic Green Tuff Ignimbrite occurred approximately 56,000 years ago, followed by caldera formation.
Monte Epomeo (Mount Epomeo), the island’s highest point, consists of green tuff that was submerged after its eruption and then uplifted.
Over time, tectonism has shaped Ischia, resulting in a series of horsts and grabens. Resurgent doming uplifted the island by at least 800 meters (2,600 feet) during the past 33,000 years.
Ischia has experienced Holocene volcanism, including pumiceous tephras, tuff rings, lava domes, and lava flows.
The most recent eruption occurred in 1302, producing a spatter cone and the Arso lava flow, which reached the northeastern coast.
Ischia’s captivating landscape, volcanic history, and vibrant communities make it a remarkable destination for travelers seeking natural beauty and cultural richness.

Ischia is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. It's known for its mineral-rich thermal waters. Hot springs bubble up at Maronti Beach, in the south. East, Roman remains lie beneath the sea floor at Cartaromana Beach. The beach has views of medieval Aragonese Castle, linked to Ischia by a stone bridge. Nearby, 18th-century Palazzo dell’Orologio houses the Sea Museum, devoted to Ischia’s fishing tradition.

Ischia is the name of the main comune of the island. The other comuni of the island are Barano d'Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Forio, Lacco Ameno, and Serrara Fontana. Ischia's main industry is tourism, centering on thermal spas that cater mostly to European (especially German) and Asian tourists eager to enjoy the fruits of the island's natural volcanic activity, its hot springs, and its volcanic mud.

The Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese, Ischia Ponte) was built on a rock near the island in 474 BC, by Hiero I of Syracuse. At the same time, two towers were built to control enemy fleets' movements. The rock was then occupied by Parthenopeans (the ancient inhabitants of Naples). In 326 BC the fortress was captured by Romans, and then again by the Parthenopeans.

The gardens, located in Forio-San Francesco, were originally the property of English composer William Walton. Walton lived in the villa next to the gardens with his Argentinian wife Susana. When the composer arrived on the island in 1946, he immediately called Russell Page from England to lay out the garden. Wonderful tropical and Mediterranean plants were planted and some have now reached amazing proportions. The gardens include wonderful views over the city and harbour of Forio. A museum dedicated to the life and work of William Walton now comprises part of the garden complex. There's also a recital room where renowned musical artists perform on a regular schedule.

A botanical garden, located in Forio-Citara Bay, is the result of 50 years of the dedicated work of Captain Giuseppe D'Ambra, the owner of the Villa. Giardini Ravino is a botanical garden with one of the richest collection of cacti and succulents cultivated outdoors in Europe. Giardini Ravino has been the subject of an award from the OPE (European Parliamentary Observatory) for the most ecofriendly property in South Italy.

Villa La Colombaia is located in Lacco Ameno and Forio territories. Surrounded by a park, the villa (called The Dovecote) was made by Luigi Patalano, a famous local socialist and journalist. It is now the seat of a cultural institution and museum dedicated to Luchino Visconti.

Nearby, 18th-century Palazzo dell’Orologio houses the Sea Museum, devoted to Ischia’s fishing tradition.

Ischia is the largest island in the bay of Naples and is considered by many to be the most beautiful, (though Capri is considerably more famous). The island is 10 km from east to west and 7 km north to south. It has a coastline of 34 km and covers an area of 46.3 sq km. It has a permanent population of approximately 58,000. Up to 6 million tourists (principally from the Italian mainland and Germany) flock to the island for its volcanic thermal spas and as well for its beaches and food.

Several towns are located along the island's coast. The largest city in Ischia is actually (and often confusingly, for tourists) called Ischia. The town of Ischia, however, has two different centers: Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte. Ischia Porto is the commercial center of the island and is named after the main port. Ischia Ponte (ponte meaning bridge in Italian) is named for the area surrounding and including the footbridge that was constructed to connect the Castello Aragonese with the island. Beside the town of Ischia, some of the other centres are Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola, Forio, Barano, Sant'Angelo, and the jointed town of Serrara-Fontana.

Ischia — historically called Pitecusae — has been colonized in turn by the Greeks, Syrausansa, Romans, Saracens, Turks, and Aragonese; all of whom were interested in its excellent strategic position as well as its therapeutic hot-spring waters and of course its attractive landscape. The result of all this varied history can be seen in the ruins of various outposts, towers, and tufa rock shelters hidden all over the island. More recently Ischia has become a frequent backdrop for Italian and American movies such as “Vacanze ad Ischia”, “Appuntamento ad Ischia”, and The Talented Mr.Ripley. The island has also been used as a cinematic stand-in for the Island of Capri.

In this video we are wandering around in the south part of this beautiful island. To get to Ischia you basically need to fly to Naples. That's the closest airport anyway. It's quite easy to get to Ischia from Naples Molo Beverello. From the airport you can get on a bus (€5) to the port. I'd recommend to buy ferry tickets online in advance.
I've used but there are more options out there. Prices are pretty much the same. (€40/person return, 2018)
After you purchase your ticket they send an email confirmation which you have to print out. With that conf. you can collect your tickets at the port. Each ferry company has its own stall next to each other. It says in the confirmation that you have to be there 1 hour before the ferry leaves but no one asked us anything, could have got there just 10 mins before departure.
It takes about 1 hour to get to Casamicciola Terme, Ischia. From there (2mins from the port) you can catch a bus (they run till late night) for about €2 (You can buy tickets from the driver). It takes about 30-40mins to get to the south part of the island where Panza and Sant'Angelo are. It's truly a beautiful island and there are many many things to do.
I've downloaded an App (Ischia Island Travel Guide) which helped me a lot to get around and search for things to do.
