Places to see in ( Carrickfergus - UK )
Carrickfergus, colloquially known as Carrick, is a large town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Carrickfergus sits on the north shore of Belfast Lough, 11 miles from Belfast.
Carrickfergus is County Antrim's oldest town and one of the oldest towns in Ireland as a whole. Carrickfergus was the administrative centre for Carrickfergus Borough Council, before this was amalgamated into the Mid and East Antrim District Council in 2015, and forms part of the Belfast Metropolitan Area. Carrickfergus is also a townland of 65 acres, a civil parish and a barony.
The town is the subject of the classic Irish folk song Carrickfergus, a 19th-century translation of an Irish-language song (Do Bhí Bean Uasal) from Munster, which begins with the words, I wish I was in Carrickfergus. The British peerage title of Baron Carrickfergus, which had become extinct in 1883, was bestowed upon Prince William on his wedding day in 2011.
Carrickfergus railway station opened on 1 October 1862. In addition, the northwest of the town is served by Clipperstown railway station, and the east by Downshire railway station. All three stations have regular commuter services to Belfast and Larne. Three historic stations in Carrickfergus, Barn, Eden and Mount, closed in the 1970s.

10 Best Places to Live in Northern Ireland
What are the best cities to live in Northern Ireland? We don’t often hear about Northern Ireland as much as we do the three other provinces because it’s the least discussed. If the 4 nations making the kingdom are ranked in order of popularity, we could go like England, Scotland, and, Wales. That’s why many people don’t have an idea of what living in Northern Ireland, the fourth province of the UK is. This time, we want to discuss the 10 best places to live in Northern Ireland.
This will prove that the part of Ireland that remained in the UK since 1921 is not faring badly at all. Please enjoy the discussion about the best places to live in Northern Ireland.
10. Newtownards
Newtownards is a town, townland, and civil parish in County Down. It’s not far from Strangford Lough, another one of the best places to live in Northern Ireland that would be discussed later. Newtownards is at the northernmost tip of Strangford Lough. It is also 10 miles east of Belfast on the Ards Peninsula.
When Newtownards hit the headline on July 17, 2021, it was about the townland of Ballywatticock toward Mount Stewart, where temperature peaked 31.2 °C at 15:40. Besides that, it has a very low crime rate. The town has a lot of beautiful spots that can add colors to the quality of life. Places such as Movilla Abbey, Somme Heritage Center, and Mount Stewart attract people to this town. The town’s residents are also entertained by sporting activities such as rugby, cricket, football, and motor racing. It is one of the best places to live in Northern Ireland.
9. Fermanagh
Ireland's Lakeland County of Fermanagh is the next of the 10 best places to live in Northern Ireland. It’s one of the six counties of the region, bordering the Republic. The county is renowned for its boating and fishing. Once a legendary dry plain, Fermanagh was believed to have magic well at its center with widely held tales of two lovers. Of course, the story around it makes the county. The lakes of Lough Erne stretching through 50 miles over the county were believed to result from bubbles from the water.
If you live in Fermanagh, you’ll be living in the roots of some famous people, including writer Rudyard Kipling and former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and Ulysses Grant. Enniskillen, which we shall talk about later, is the county town of Fermanagh. You don’t generally hear about crime here and the cozy place has enough amenities.
8. Ballycastle
Let’s next consider Ballycastle, a small seaside town in County Antrim. Deriving its name from the Irish expression “Baile an Chaistil,” the “town of the castle” is on the north-easternmost coastal tip of the region of the United Kingdom. Its harbor plays host to the ferry to Rathlin Island quite visible from the coast.
Anyone living in Northern Ireland and desires a harbor town to live near the coast should consider living in Ballycastle. If you’ve ever heard anything about the best places to live in Northern Ireland, you’ll realize that Ballycastle is frequently mentioned in such lists. According to The Sunday Times, this seaside town is one of five places in Northern Ireland considered the best places to live in Britain. The publication crowns it as actually the best place to live in the province. It receives accolades for offering a better quality of life to the majority of the residents in areas of education, health, crime control, and house prices.

Exploring The Town Of Carrickfergus - Northern Ireland - Carrickfergus Attractions / Castle & Town
Are you trying to explore Northern Ireland and visit most of its towns to see the beauty of it? Let's take you through a small tour this time where you could know more about Carrickfergus and the things you could do there.
Carrickfergus is a large town in county Antrim, Northern Ireland that is sometimes also referred to as Carrick and it is actually the oldest town in county Antrim and one of the oldest when it comes to Northern Ireland as a whole. Carrickfergus sits on the north shore of Belfast Lough and it is a town land of 65 acre, a civil parish and a barony.
From where did the name Carrickfergus actually come? It is believed that the name of this town in Northern Ireland comes from Fergus Mor (Fergus the Great), the legendary king of Dál Riata. Back in time, Carrickfergus actually predated Belfast which is now the capital of Northern Ireland and it was even considered larger than the nearby city. The interesting thing is that back in time, Carrickfergus and the surrounding area was actually treated as a separate county back in the old days. (
One of the top landmarks of Carrickfergus town is Carrickfergus Castle, which was built back by John de Courcy, the Anglo-Norman knight who invaded Ulster and established his headquarters. This castle is built on the rock of Fergus and it is known as one of the best preserved Norman castles in Ireland. (
Carrickfergus Castle is considered the most famous when it comes to the attractions and landmarks of this town, but there are a couple of things to be kept in mind for those visiting it in order not to leave without checking them. The castle will stand on top of the list, but there is also Belfast Lough and sitting just by it, there is Ulster Folk and Transport Museum ( there is also Flame Gasworks and Shaftesbury Park.
Walking through the streets of the town could get you introduced to some other important attractions found there, such as Carrickfergus Marina, The Knights statue, U.S. Rangers Centre and Carrickfergus Town Walls.
Being a famous big town found in Northern Ireland and having different landmarks that call out for the visitors to go to and check, we have to mention that Carrickfergus has also left its mark on a song that was also named Carrickfergus. Carrickfergus song was released in 1965 and was first recorded under the name The Kerry Boatman by Dominic Behan on an LP called The Irish Rover. This song was recorded one more time afterwards by the Clancy brothers.
The meaning of the name Carrickfergus is rock of Fergus and this goes back to King Fergus who was the one to find Carrickfergus and who was shipwrecked off the coast at a strategic position on a rocky spur above the harbour, and that is exactly where Carrickfergus Castle is actually located now, the castle that played a great role in the history of Northern Ireland.
This is one of the different suggested ideas that we are offering for those coming to Northern Ireland and want to make a different plan and visit different towns, not just the capital city Belfast ( From the other suggested places that we would like to offer and recommend, there is Armagh City ( there is Lisburn City ( there is Bushmills Town ( there is Portadown Town ( there is also Carnlough fishing village ( there is Letterkenny which is also known as the Cathedral Town ( and lots of other towns and cities which are scattered all around Northern Ireland and which every single one of them is calling out for visitors in its own way and with its different attractions.
Every single country you are travelling to has its towns and cities which are attracting the tourists and visitors to them and that is exactly the same reason why planning for a trip and digging deep behind the places that might not be that famous is considered one important thing to do and always keep in mind.
On our channel, you will find lots of recommended places that one could go to in Northern Ireland to make a trip more significant. These places include cities, towns, landmarks, festivals and every other thing that might be considered part of Northern Ireland.
Have you ever been to Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland before? Did you know about Carrickfergus song or have you ever been to Carrickfergus Castle? Let us know more about your stories in this old town. If its your first time to know all this information, then put it in your plan.

Welcome To The Video Of Today - Visiting Carrickfergus Castle, Northern Ireland
A sizable town on the County Antrim coast, Carrickfergus—also known as Carrick locally—is not far from Belfast City. As one of the oldest towns in Ireland, Carrickfergus is most known for Carrickfergus Castle, one of the best maintained in the nation.
1. The town of Carrickfergus is situated on Belfast Lough's northern shore. Many of the top attractions in Belfast are a 25-minute drive away, and Larne is 20 minutes away.
2. The town is regarded as being among the oldest in all of Northern Ireland and the oldest in County Antrim. There is a lot of history to discover during a visit between the fantastic museums and ancient Carrickfergus Castle.
3. One of the most well-known Irish melodies, Carrickfergus, features the town of Carrickfergus as its theme. Dominic Behan released the song under the name The Kerry Boatman for the first time in 1965. The song's ancestors, however, are believed to have existed in the 19th century. The song's opening line is I wish I was at Carrickfergus.
4. Carrickfergus is a wonderful place to base yourself if you want to see more of Northern Ireland because it's close to Belfast City. From Carrick, you may simply start a car excursion down the Causeway Coastal Route to see where Game of Thrones has been filmed.
From Belfast, many people like to visit Carrickfergus. It's well known for its long history and illustrious Carrickfergus Castle, but it's also an attractive starting point for a trip along the Causeway Coastal Route. The town's name is supposed to have been inspired by Dal Riata's King Fergus Mor, also known as Fergus the Great. His ship capsized on a nearby rock, which later came to be known as Carraig Fhearghais, or Fergus' rock.
The town predates Belfast by a great distance and is considered the oldest community in County Antrim. After John de Courcy, an Anglo-Norman knight conquered Ulster in 1170 and constructed Carrickfergus Castle, the area started to grow into a town. Over the years, the castle has withstood numerous sieges, notably those that occurred during the Seven Years War in the 18th century and the Battle of Carrickfergus in 1597's Nine Years War.
The RMS Titanic travelled via Belfast Lough in 1912 and anchored for the night near Carrickfergus. Thousands of spectators gathered to see the ship depart on its first trip.

Norman Castles of Ireland - Carrickfergus & Dundrum - Northern Ireland Travel Guide
My next series of travel diaries takes a look at some of the landmarks in Northern Ireland, the last of the four countries I had visited that make up the United Kingdom.
Just as they had done in England, the Normans have left their mark in Northern Ireland with a number of castles, and this video looks at two 12th Century castles that consolidated their power on the province of Ulster.

Welcome to my travel vlog to Northern Ireland!
In this vlog, you'll experience traveling across the Belfast city, the city centre, the Belfast City Hall, the Titanic Belfast, the Carrickfergus Castle, and the Cushendun caves.
#belfast #belfastcity #titanicbelfast #carrickfergus #caves of #cushendun #northernireland
This city Hall is located in Donegall Square and, since 1906, this place has attracted tourists and it offers a fantastic backdrop to take pictures while the Belfast city centre has all the famous brand shops, restaurants, and hotels in the city centre.
Titanic Belfast is the best visitor attraction around the Belfast city. It was opened in 2012 and it stands as a monument to Belfast's maritime heritage in the city's Titanic Quarter where the famous Titanic ship was built. The Titanic Belfast building contains more than 130,000 sq ft of floor space occupied by a series of galleries, private function rooms and community facilities. Around a million visitors come to visit this place each year and it is considered as the second-most visited tourist attraction in Northern Ireland in recent years. The self-guided Titanic Experience extends over nine interpretive and interactive galleries, which explore the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Titanic, as well as the city and people who made her. You can book tickets online at
The Carrickfergus Castle is a Norman castle in Northern Ireland, situated in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim. Unlike many other castles, Carrickfergus Castle sits in excellent condition despite being about 800 years old. Historically, this castle was besieged in turn by the Scots, Irish, English and French, but, yet it is one of the best preserved medieval structures in Ireland. If you are interested in castles and history, you can visit inside the castle by booking a tour from the Visitor Information Centre to know and experience the castle from within. The castle now also houses historical displays as well as cannons from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The opening hours to enter inside the castle are usually from 9:00am to 4:00 pm. However, you can always roam around the castle premises for free.
The Cushendun caves are located in County Antrim of Northern Ireland. Though the caves are very old, they have only become popular since the popular TV series “Game of Thrones” was filmed in this location as both the Stormlands of House Baratheon and the caves in King’s Landing. It is the place where Melisandre gives birth to the shadow killer. These Caves were formed over 400 million years ago. The caves are close to the Cushendun beach, and you can explore it by yourself for free of charge.
The Fullerton Arms Restaurant is a Game of Thrones-themed restaurant where you can take picture with an Iron Throne!
In the next part of the travel vlog, we continue our journey to the Giant's Causeway and to the Dark Hedges.

Giant's Causeway and Antrim Coast Daytrip Guide | What to see and where to stop along the way
If you are planning to visit Belfast, Northern Ireland, then you really need to make sure you plan a trip to the Giant's Causeway and the Antrim Coast. The Giant's Causeway has some unforgettable natural wonders to view, and some breathtaking looks at Northern Ireland's spectacular coastline. I can't recommend it highly enough!
There are plenty of day tours leaving from Belfast, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting there. I recommend starting your day by visiting the medieval Carrickfergus Castle, just outside of Belfast. Next, stop by the amazing Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge and get your first views of the Antrim Coast. And then, the crown jewel of the trip - the Giant's Causeway! This was an incredible day trip and I am so glad I took it.
