Hike #100N: Mount Russell, Lake Perris SRA, Moreno Valley, CA (Narrative Version)
Visit Date: 4/10/22.
Hiking Mount Russell: The Inland Empire (Lake Perris SRA), Moreno Valley, CA.
Mount Russell is the highest point in Lake Perris State Recreation Area. I chose to climb it from a point where I didn't need to pay for a state park fee. From a rural area of Moreno Valley, there is a use trail to the summit. It is not clearly defined, but this time around I had the benefit of being a previous visitor, so I didn't need to completely solve the puzzle this time around. Great views from the top, plus there was still a little bit of greenery leading into the dry months of the year, when this area will be a consistent brown. Certainly a great Inland Empire day for hiking!

CA 60, Historic US 60 East - Pomona, Moreno Valley Fwys, Badlands Expy - Jurupa Valley to Beaumont
Today we get to jump in a time machine back to 2016. CA 60 was one of the first highways I ever filmed, so I thought it deserved to get remade. This video has been updated and improved with newer music, color correction, etc. I'm actually very happy with how it turned out, so I hope you enjoy! Now on to the history.
When the first maps for the US Highway System were laid out, two major roads were planned to run to Los Angeles from points east - Illinois and Virginia to be exact. The Chicago, Illinois to lOCalifornia routing was given the number of US 60, that was until some of the southern states made a stink over the numbering. Per AASHTO rules, US route numbers divisible by 5 were to be transnational routes. Even numbers were set for East-West (transcontinental) routes and odd numbers were reserved for North-South (transnational) routes. By definition, the Illinois to California route did not qualify for the US 60 designation. As such, US 60 was recycled for the Virginia to California routing and the Illinois to California routing became infamous US 66.
US 60 was a major trading route for the American southwest. It ran through or near large cities such as Los Angeles, Riverside, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Tulsa, Springfield, Louisville, and Richmond. It served as the only connection from Phoenix to Los Angeles for the longest time, as US 80 ended in San Diego.
After multiple realignments, US 60 was removed from California as part of the 1964 renumbering. Most of the highway had been directly superseded by I-10 in California and there was no need for multiplexed highways. US 60 however was still signed as late as 1972 in California, when it was finally decertified. At that point, US 60 ended in space at the Colorado River crossing on I-10 when the highway left Arizona and entered California. Shortly thereafter, Arizona opted to truncate US 60 to Brenda Jct at I-10, which still serves as US 60's western terminus.
Prior to it's signs being removed in 1972, US 60 was signed for part of the way along the Pomona and Moreno Valley Freeways. In fact, the Badlands Expressway, which is technically part of the Moreno Valley Freeway, traces it's roots back to the 1930's as a two-lane shortcut built for US 60 to bypass the Jackrabbit Trail alignment through the Badlands. US 395 also used part of the Moreno Valley Freeway, taking the same path of I-215 from the 60/91/215 Riverside Interchange to the 60/215 Moreno Valley Interchange. (Also worth noting for historical purposes that CA 91 also used to be US 91).
Nowadays, the Badlands Expressway is now under construction to become a full freeway. Once that project is completed, I believe some of the historic signs that date to the US 60 days will be removed and replaced. Enjoy it while you still can.
Thanks for watching!
