Sardinia is one of the best islands we've been to in Europe when it comes to beaches. On this video, you'll get to see why it is known as the European Caribbean.
We've been to Sardinia 4 years ago, and since then we always knew that we'll come back one day. And finally, we decided to make it happen this year. We went to so many amazing places we haven't seen on our first visit.
Today's episode, you'll see how we spent our first 5 days on the island. We tried to share everything we can (the accomodations, prices, food etc!). This is just the 1st part of our Sardinia travel series, please stay tuned for more!

The Caribbean in the Mediterranean is located about 200 kilometers from the Italian mainland and is the second largest Mediterranean island after Sicily. Together with its many small bays and offshore islands, Sardinia is home to countless dream beaches with fine, white sand and turquoise water along a coastline of about 1,850 kilometers. In the east lie popular resorts such as San Teodoro and Budoni, while the south impresses with Sardinia's capital Cagliari and the popular vacation regions of Villasimius and Costa Rei. The west of the island, on the other hand, is a bit quieter, for example on the Costa Verde, named after its lush vegetation and magnificent nature. The Costa Smeralda, where stars and starlets also like to vacation, is not called the Emerald Coast for nothing, because the water shines on the northeast coast of the island in a unique emerald green. #sardinia #italy #bestplaces

Once a fishing village, today this is a well-known seaside resort. San Giovanni, a village in Cabras to the south of the Sinis peninsula within the protected marine area, is located along the road leading to the ancient town of Tharros and, further south, the scenic Capo San Marco. The beach extends for around two kilometres, from the Phoenician-Punic (later Roman) colony to FuntanaMeiga, with a car park including space for campers. It overlooks a crystal clear sea with a seabed rich in sea life, a paradise for diving, snorkelling and underwater fishing. Constant winds also make this a destination for surfers.
The landscape of sand dunes is interrupted by sandstone and basalt rocks as well as the suggestive Spanish tower, named for San Giovanni and built by Philip II between 1580 and 1610 to deal with pirate incursions. The tower stands 500 metres from the beach and is accessed by a slightly uphill path.
Before becoming a well-known tourist centre, San Giovanni di Sinis was a fishing village, famous for its characteristic rush huts, which were lined up along the Oristano coast right up until the second world war. Today, it is a small village with a bar, restaurants and hotels, which livens up during the summer. In the centre square you'll find a small paleo-Christian church dating back to the 5th century, originally with a Greek cross layout and later rebuilt to a Latin cross plan.
In the territory of Cabras, east of Tharros, is the beach of Mare morto, a quiet harbour for yachts, with a kilometre of rocky coast to the west. Along the 30 kilometres of protected coastline, which also includes Mal di Ventre Island, the famous beaches of super-fine quartz sand known as Is Arutas, Maimoni and Mari Ermi slope into the turquoise sea,Along the road towards Is Arutas, add a different touch to your holiday by passing through San Salvatore di Sinis, with its Wild West scenery and the location for the Corsa degli Scalzi procession.
Moving on from the cliffs and sand dunes towards the centre of the island, you come across the lagunas: the Stagno di Cabras and Mistras, which are stopping points for birdwatchers. In the town, don't miss a visit to the Civico Museo Archeologico, where you can see one of the biggest archaeological finds of the late 20th century in the Mediterranean: the stone statue of the Mont'e Prama Giants, the symbol of Sardinia.

Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Tharros
Tharros (also spelled Tharras, Archaic Greek: Θάρρας, Hellenistic Greek, Tarras or Tarrae, Τάρραι) was an ancient city on the west coast of Sardinia, Italy. It is currently an archaeological site near the village of San Giovanni di Sinis, municipality of Cabras, in the Province of Oristano. It is located on the southern shore of the Sinis peninsula, which forms the northern cape of the Bay of Oristano, by the cape of San Marco. Tharros, mentioned by Ptolemy and in the Itineraries, seems to have been one of the most important places on the island.
Until some years ago, the archaeological findings in the area of Tharros supported the theory that Phoenicians founded the town in eighth century BC. The probability of this was reduced by the finding of some parts of the old settlement in the Mistras Lagoon. A submerged 100 m wall seems to be part of a port structure much older than the Phoenician one, since in 1200 BC sealevel rose, swallowing the existing buildings. A previous nuragic settlement apparently existed there in the Bronze Age, as the nuragic presence near the tophet area seems to suggest.
Archaeologists found a tophet, an open-air sacred place common for several installations of Phoenicians in the western Mediterranean, on top of a hill called Su Muru Mannu near the remains of a village built by the nuragic peoples (1900-730 BC ). This is seen as a first sign of colonization and urbanization.
Excavations showed that from the 8th century BC its abandonment in the 10th century Tharros was inhabited, first by Phoenicians, then by Punics and then by Romans. The town was the capital of the medieval Giudicato of Arborea, a Roman/Byzantine relict state from the 9th century until 1070 when Orzocorre I of Arborea relocated to Oristano under pressure of Saracen raiders. The town was effectively abandoned at this time or shortly thereafter. The site was then used for centuries as a quarry. An inscription records the repair of the road from Tharras to Cornus as late as the reign of emperor Philip. The Antonine Itinerary correctly places it 18 miles from Cornus and 12 from Othoca (modern Santa Giusta near Oristano). However, its history during most of the period of Roman domination or early Christianity is unknown.
The area is now an open-air museum with active excavation sites. Among the interesting structures are the tophet, the bath installations, the temple foundations and an area with houses and artisan workshops. Most of the artifacts can be found in the Archaeological Museum at Cagliari, in the Antiquarium Arborense, the Archaeological Museum of the town of Cabras and in the British Museum, London.
