We always have fun when going for a whale shark trip, normally we encounter 5 up to 10 whale sharks a day. And there are times we encounter a group of gentle giant more 15.

Mafia Island is a small island in Tanzania located in the South of Zanzibar.It is an amazing place for divers, it is a worldwide known spot. There are so many beautiful places, corals and fish. If you are lucky enough you will be able to see dolphins, shark reef or turtles.
I went to Mafia island for 10 days after spending 2 months in Zanzibar.
I fell in love with this island, I can only recommend you to go there.

Mafia Island, Island in Tanzania.
Mafia Island is part of Tanzania's Mafia Archipelago, in the Indian Ocean. Large swaths of the island's southern coastline and surrounding waters are protected by the Mafia Island Marine Park. Within the park are many coral reefs, home to wildlife such as whale sharks and sea turtles. In the south, beaches include secluded Ras Kisimani, just across from Bwejuu Island. Popular Utende Beach edges onto Chole Bay.
- Why is Mafia Island called Mafia Island?
The name Mafia derives from the Arabic morfiyeh, meaning group or archipelago, or from the Swahili mahali pa afya, meaning a healthy dwelling-place. In 1995 Mafia Island had financial help from the WWF to make a natural marine wildlife centre which led to establishment of the first Marine Park in Tanzania.
- When can you see whale sharks in Mafia Island?
The best season for whale shark sighting is from October to February each year. November and December is the most reliable time for whale sharks sighting at Mafia Island. During peak season whale sharks can be easily seen nearshore.
- Can whale sharks eat you?
Whale sharks are really big. Their mouths can get up to five feet long, and they can suck in 600 cubic meters of water every hour. The sharks know that they can't eat you, and they often close their mouths around big prey like you or big fish.
- How do you get to Mafia Island?
The easiest way to get to Mafia Island is on a plane. Coastal Aviation and Auric Air both offer multiple daily flights from Dar es Salaam, which take approximately 30 minutes. Budget travelers can also opt to travel to Mafia by ferry.
- Why visit Mafia Island Tanzania?
For the average tourist, the reason to head to the island is for the fantastic Mafia Island Marine Park that encompasses around 50% of the coastal waters of the island. On top of this, there are a few remnants of Mafia’s more important past, as a trading post for the Omanis’ and also as a small colony for the Germans….a good example of their legacy is on Chole Island where it is possible to wander amongst the overgrown buildings and walls.

Mafia fulfils all the requirements of a tropical paradise, with white sand beaches, turquoise waters and a lush green interior intersected by unpaved roads. This Island is much less known and definitely much quieter than Zanzibar, but it offers the most incredible diving experiences and embodies the real definition of barefoot luxury. The water is beautifully transparent with fantastic views of the unspoiled coral reef; the variety of the coral permits an unimaginable quantity of fish, with diving and snorkeling sites just a short boat ride away.

Остров Чумбе – уникальный и не имеющих аналогов в Африке коралловый парк. Это маленькая, но значимая часть африканской рифовой экосистемы. У парка есть собственный коралловый риф, лесной заповедник, учебный центр, эко – лодж и исторические постройки. На острове может находиться не более 18 гостей, поэтому планировать свой визит сюда нужно заранее.Кстати, один из рейнджеров острова говорит на русском и очень рад попрактиковаться в общении с гостями.
Забронировать тур на остров можно только напрямую - его вы вряд ли найдете у пляжных зазывал и экскурсионных служб вашего отеля.
Сайт парка:
Стоимость однодневного тура - $90.
В стоимость входит:
- трансфер на остров и обратно от Чуквани (такси до места сбора оплачивается отдельно);
- дневное размещение в бунгало;
- прогулка по коралловому лесу;
- обед (блюда местной кухни);
- снорклинг (снаряжение предоставляется бесплатно).
Вечером на острове можно увидеть кокосовых крабов – они выползают из своих укрытий, чтобы найти еду. Но доступно это развлечение только для гостей, которые приезжают на Чумбе с ночевкой.
Стоимость – от $260. Помимо пребывания в бунгало в эту цену входит программа дневного тура, питание и напитки.
Не стоит забывать, что вы находитесь в Африке. Использование солнцезащитного крема обязательно. Но солнце – не единственная опасность. При заселении в бунгало на втором этаже нас ждал гость. Рейнджер (наверное, чтобы нас не пугать) сказал, что скорее всего змея не ядовита и я смело приблизился к ней, чтобы снять поближе. Только при монтаже ролика мы выяснили, что это – зеленая мамба. Крайне ядовитая и опасная змея, обитающая как раз в тех широтах. Она питается птицами, мелкими зверьками и ящерицами, но, если ее разозлить она может атаковать человека.
Несмотря на крайне плотную программу однодневного тура у нас было около 2,5 часов свободного времени. Его можно потратить по своему усмотрению – прогулка/маяк/пляж, а можно все совместить и насладиться отдыхом на острове по полной!
Чумбе совсем не похож на всю остальную Танзанию, ни на островную, ни на материковую. Здесь ты как будто попадаешь в другой маленький мирок, свободный от благ цивилизации, находишься наедине с природой и своими позитивными мыслями. Уникален он также тем, что энергию здесь получают от солнца, воду от проливных дождей, удовольствие – от атмосферы релакса, уединения с природой и яркого экваториального солнца!
