Jalan Kulim, Bukit Mertajam, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Jalan Kulim is one of the major roads in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. As its name would suggest, this is the road that leads to the town of Kulim in Kedah. In the old days it was the only road linking the two towns, with only country roads in between.
Nowadays Jalan Kulim has become one of the most important roads in Bukit Mertajam. Many of the important sights in Bukit Mertajam are located along this road, among them the St Anne Church, Cherok Tokun Relics, Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest and Nandaka Vihara Buddhist Monastery.

BUKIT MERTAJAM / A VISIT TO PENANG MAINLAND / TRAVEL VLOG MALAYSIA / MARKET VIDEO / FOOD VLOG
Bukit Mertajam is growing on me. The hotel was a mistake but my morning walk through this little interesting town on the mainland of Penang here in Malaysia is definitely nice and full of surprises. I can tell that there are no tourists here, even under normal circumstances. Now, with the Covid-19 pandemic, we are definitely the only tourists, at least the only Matt Salles. Join me for a walk through downtown and the very lively market in the morning. Ah yes, and let's have some breakfast.

Welcome to my latest food adventure! Today, we're taking you off the beaten path to the hidden town of **Berapit** in **Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia**. This relatively unknown gem is a food lover's paradise, packed with incredible local eats that you won't find anywhere else.
Dive into the culinary wonders of Berapit with me where I spend most of my highschool life and discover why this hidden town should be on every food lover's bucket list. Enjoy the journey and happy eating! 🍴
📍 **Why Berapit?**
Berapit might not be on the typical tourist radar, but it's a town bursting with culinary delights. The food here is all locally manufactured, preserving the authentic flavors and traditions of Penang's rich culinary heritage.
🍜 **What You'll Discover:
- Steamed Vegetable Dumplings (Chai Kueh) - Soft chewy skin together with the slightly crunchy vegetables makes it an irresistible snack any time of the day.
- Curry puff is a snack of Southeast Asian origin. It is a small pie consisting of curry with chicken and potatoes in a deep-fried or baked pastry shell. The consistency of the curry is quite thick to prevent it from oozing out of the snack.
- Local Coffee Shops: Sip on a cup of robust, locally brewed coffee, and enjoy the cozy, laid-back vibe of Berapit's coffee shops.

Berapit (GPS: 5.39774, 100.49416) is a village in Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai. It is the locality with Kubang Semang to the northwest, Mengkuang to the northeast and Bukit Mertajam town centre to the southwest. Much of Berapit is determined by its main road, Jalan Berapit. First video on Penang Michelin restaurant!
Alright alright the title might be a bit click bait-ish. We went to Bukit Mertajam 2 weeks ago for a short vacation. Never did we know, we “accidentally” ate at 2 Michelin restaurants on the same day.
Just a few days after our visit. BM Yam Rice Kopitiam and Ming Qing Duck Egg Char Koay Teow was announced Michelin Select and BIB Gourmand respectively. We couldn’t be happier for them and we couldn’t believe our luck to have eaten there before it became too busy with their newly acquired Michelin fame.
Watch the video if you want to know our verdict about it😋. All in all Bukit Mertajam food scene really surprised us with all of the local eateries and contemporary cafes.
We strongly recommended if you are planning your visit to Penang Island, perhaps take a day or two and pay Bukit Mertajam a visit. You will be delighted.

Bukit Mertajam derived its name from the Mertajam Hill, which means pointed hill in Malay. This was said to be a native reference to the geography of the area, where the Mertajam Hill forms the highest outcrop.
Bukit Mertajam had been part of the Hindu-Buddhist Bujang Valley civilization, which ruled over what is now Kedah up to the 6th century AD. A megalith at Cherok Tok Kun, discovered in 1845, contains Pali inscriptions which alluded to the presence of a Hindu-Buddhist polity in the region between the 5th and 6th centuries.
Whilst founded in the 19th century as an agricultural area, Bukit Mertajam also evolved into a transportation hub, following the completion of a railway line towards Perai at the end of the century. To this day, its railway station remains a major Malayan Railway station within Seberang Perai.
Walkaround St Anne's Church Bukit Mertajam, Penang - Minor Basilica of St Anne
We take a quick walkaround St Anne's Church Bukit Mertajam in Penang. Also known as Minor Basilica of St Anne. We hope the video helps those who can't make it there in person. For those who can't make it up the hill, we take a walk up to see the remains of the old church. We don't recommend the elderly walking up there as it is very slippery at the top due to moss on the floor.
