HORKSTOW: North Lincolnshire Parish #10 of 56
This is one of the five “Low Villages” between Brigg and the River Humber, so-called because of their position below the Northern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Itwas previously part of Glanford administrative district, and before that, the North Lindsey division of Lindsey, Lincolnshire. According to A Dictionary of British Place Names, its name probably means shelter for animals or people
There are three listed buildings of particular historic note. One of those gave its name to a traditional Lincolnshire folk tune. In 1937 Percy Grainger used it as part of his Lincolnshire Posy suite. Historically there’s a bit here. A 4th century Roman mosaic - a tessellated pavement depicting Greek mythological figures – was found and was taken to the British Museum in 1927 on permanent loan, but was transferred to the Hull and East Riding Museum in 1974
The parish church is dedicated to St Maurice, and is Grade I listed. It was built supposedly by The Knights Templar in the early 12th century, though in fact they had nothing to do with the church. Within the church is an oval, marble tablet to Catherine Ayers dating to 1759, and at the East end of the nave, one to Rear Admiral Thomas Shirley – the leader of Shirley's Gold Coast expedition, dated to 1814
A suspension bridge is not something you’d expect to see in a village this small, but here we find the only suspension bridge designed by Sir John Rennie. The ironwork was supplied by Messrs John and Edward Walker of Gospel Oak Ironworks, in Tipton, Staffordshire, and the bridge was completed in 1836. It links the village to Winterton. A ferry had previously connected the villages, and it is believed a bridge had occupied the site from the 18th century, providing access to the brick-making kilns located on the Winterton side.
To finish this one off, I found a fabulous rendition of that aforementioned folk tune and was granted permission by the amazing Kirsty Hannah to use it in this video. Here’s HORKSTOW.

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Filey Beach
Filey is a small town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire, it is part of the borough of Scarborough between Scarborough and Bridlington on the North Sea coast. Although it was a fishing village, it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort.
Filey is at the eastern end of the Cleveland Way, a long-distance footpath; it starts at Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors. It was the second National Trail to be opened (1969). The town is at the northern end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail which starts at Hessle and crosses the Yorkshire Wolds. Filey is the finishing point for Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. The 70-mile (110 km) ride begins at Wetherby Racecourse.
Filey has a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line. A second station at Filey Holiday Camp railway station to the south of the town served the former Butlins holiday camp. The camp has been re-developed into a 600-home holiday housing development, The Bay Filey.

Places to see in ( Staithes - UK )
Places to see in ( Staithes - UK )
Staithes is a seaside village in the Scarborough Borough of North Yorkshire, England. Easington and Roxby Becks, two brooks that run into Staithes Beck, form the border between the Borough of Scarborough and Redcar and Cleveland. Formerly one of the many fishing centres in England, Staithes is now largely a tourist destination within the North York Moors National Park.
The name Staithes derives from Old English and means 'Landing-Place'. It has been suggested that it is so named after being the port for the nearby Seaton Hall and Hinderwell. At the turn of the 20th century, there were 80 full-time fishing boats putting out from Staithes. A hundred years later there are still a few part-time fisher men. There is a long tradition of using the coble (a traditional fishing vessel) in Staithes.
It was reported in 1997 that the Royal Mail were encouraging the occupants of Staithes to number their houses instead of relying on names. Whilst the regular postperson had no difficulty with the narrow streets and cottages, the relief postal staff were getting confused. Royal Mail also claimed it would aid efficiency by their postal machines which automatically read the addresses.
Staithes has a sheltered harbour, bounded by high cliffs and two long breakwaters. A mile to the west is Boulby Cliff where, for a brief period, alum, a mineral used to improve the strength and permanency of colour when dying cloth, was mined. The mining operation ended when a cheaper chemical method was developed. The ruined remnants of the mines can be seen from the cliff top when walking the Cleveland Way between Staithes and Skinningrove.
Staithes is a destination for geologists researching the Jurassic (Lias), strata in the cliffs surrounding the village. In the early 1990s, a rare fossil of a seagoing dinosaur was discovered after a rockfall between Staithes and Port Mulgrave to the south. This fossil has been the focus of an ongoing project to remove the ancient bones of the creature. Port Mulgrave remains one of the best places on the northern coast to find fossils of ammonites and many visitors spend hours cracking open the shaly rocks on the shoreline in the hope of finding a perfect specimen.
The permanent population of the village has dwindled due to more than half of the houses being second homes owned by outsiders from cities such as Leeds and York and further afield. Even though fewer than half of the houses in the village are occupied by local people, the traditions of the village have not yet died; many of the local women still buy Staithes bonnets from the sole bonnet maker, and the Staithes Fisher Men's Choir is still going strong. There is active local participation in the local RNLI Lifeboat crew. Locally, the name was traditionally pronounced Steers.
Between 1883 and 1958, the village was served by Staithes railway station which was on the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway. The southern end of the village is bisected by the A174 road between Thornaby-on-Tees and Whitby.
( Staithes - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Staithes . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Staithes - UK

STOW: West Lindsey Parish #10 of 128
OK today on the channel we are looking at a village which has a very long history dating back way before the Norman Conquest. In the year 870 the Danes invaded and probably burnt down the church that once stood here but in its place was built one of the most magnificent structures in all of Lincolnshire.
Historically Lincolnshire was divided into three parts these being the parts of Lindsey, Parts of Kesteven and the Parts of Holland. During that time this village was known as being in Lindsey to distinguish it from another village of the same name in Kesteven. These days it's just known as it's first part but it does give its name to a load of other settlements around it including Sturton, Willingham and Normanby.
The village pub here is one of the most popular in the area attracting people from all over this part of Lincolnshire. Its good food and general good country atmosphere coupled with the takeaway and delivery service it does means it's onto a winner.
Overlooked by the Minster, the centre of the village is quintessentially British. The parish boundaries also cover a few other hamlets including Coates which has a little bit of history all by itself in fact and the beautiful little church of St Ediths is well worth a visit. In times gone by this places population would have been much higher but for the intervention of the Black Death in the 14th century.
Welcome to the gem of Western Lincolnshire known as STOW.

Filey Brigg | Yorkshire Coast | Solo Hiking
Things to do in Yorkshire Coast - Explore Beautiful Coastline - Flamborough Lighthouse - Filey Beach - Filey Brigg | Solo Hiking
The Flamborough Lighthouse in North Yorkshire is a beloved landmark that has been guiding ships and boats safely to shore for over 200 years. The lighthouse is located on the cliffs at the southern tip of Flamborough Head, offering breathtaking views of the North Sea and the surrounding coastal landscape.
Flamborough Lighthouse - North Yorkshire | Solo Traveler is a must-watch for anyone who loves the great outdoors, history, and photography. The stunning visuals and the traveler's perspective make for a truly unforgettable experience. So, if you're planning a trip to the North Yorkshire or just looking for some inspiration for your next adventure, be sure to watch Flamborough Lighthouse - North Yorkshire | Solo Traveler and let yourself be transported to the heart of England.
Flamborough Headland rises to about 400 feet and is one of England's most impressive chalk cliffs. There is an unusual variety of plants and wildlife species due to the white chalk being overlaid with clay. A gannet colony is also found on the cliffs, which are the only ones on the British mainland.
At Flamborough Head stand not one but two historic lighthouses. The oldest still standing in Britain, was built in 1674. Closer to the head you'll find an early Victorian lighthouse, now open for tours in the summer months.
Paths lead along the coast in both directions from the Head, south and west towards South Landing and Bridlington. In contrast, they lead north and west to North Landing and Bempton Cliffs RSPB nature reserve, home to the largest seabird population in the UK.
Filey Brigg is a long narrow peninsula about a mile north of Filey in North Yorkshire. Its steep cliffs are 20 meters high and consist of a variety of materials, from pure sandstone to pure limestone. The landward end of the Filey Brigg peninsula is known as Carr Naze, while the long rocky neck at the seaward end is called the Brigg. In the early 1970s the fields on Brigg Hill became Filey Brigg Country Park. The biology and geology of Filey Brigg place it among the North Yorkshire Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

BRIGG: North Lincolnshire Parish #52 of 56
NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #52: BRIGG
Welcome to Brigg - a market town which lies at the junction of the River Ancholme and East to West transport routes across northern Lincolnshire.
Brigg used to be an important local town's, and used to be referred to by its full name Glanford Brigg. Officially, that still is its name, but these days everyone knows it as Brigg
The origin of the town’s name is somewhat unclear. There are theories about the “Glan” part of the name, but ford refers to an actual ford across the River Ancholme.
When a bridge was built over the river, it became Glanford Bridge. Over time that became Glanford Brigg and eventually Glanford was dropped.
Brigg originally sat at the meeting point of four parishes - Broughton, Kettleby, Scawby and Wrawby, although it lay mainly in Wrawby and was officially regarded as part of that village.
Even today, Wrawby and Brigg are inextricably linked. The town was substantially improved and rebuilt in the late 1700s and early 1800s, thanks to the Elwes family, the largest landowners
For centuries, Brigg was a small fishing hamlet. It grew quickly in the 19th century and was soon a thriving inland port, dealing with thousands of ships per year
There’s a lot here, so let’s get walking and see what we can find!

Along the way there's lots to find out about. Civil wars, irrigation projects, crazy local traditions, railways and canals. Sit back and relax for a cruise through the classic English countryside.
