Derby Canal series - Borrowash (Shacklecross) lock to Anglers Lane by drone | DJI Mini2 | 4K
Have you ever wondered where the Derby Canal used to run? Well in this video and future ones I will by flying my drone along the old route of the Derby Canal from swarkestone to Sandiacre in sections.
In this episode I will take you on a journey starting at Borrowash Bottom lock and ending at Anglers Lane, Spondon.
𝓟𝓸𝓲𝓷𝓽𝓼 𝓸𝓯 𝓲𝓷𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓮𝓼𝓽 𝓲𝓷 𝓶𝔂 𝓿𝓲𝓭𝓮𝓸 :
00:00 Starting in the east end of the lock chamber of Shacklecross Lock (Borrowash bottom lock).
00:09 Flying past the recesses where the bottom lock gates sit in the lock chamber wall.
00:15 The cill of the upper part of the lock.
00:20 The route of the former Derby canal.
00:55 Station Road, Borrowash (B5010) crosses over the canal route.
01:10 The route of the former Derby canal.
01:38 the route bends around now towards Ullickers bridge.
01:47 Lets fly under Ullickers bridge.
02:04 Flying up to see the canal route again.
02:11 Ullickers bridge from above
02:28 Hobson Drive Park in view.
02:48 Canal bends left here
03:09 Wheeldon Brothers estate, this 240 metre section is in water !
03:38 Anglers Lane coming into view.
04:22 the two wind turbines come into view.
04:26 Landing back at Borrowash Bottom lock.
Technically this was a difficult flight because the canal runs adjacent to the railway line and you have to keep 50 Metres away from Network Rail infrastructure so this meant pulling up to 164 ft (50M) before I got near the railway lines, a lot of this flight is around the 280 foot mark. By 0:54 the canal is right next to it but I was 305 foot up at that point. The second issue is Pylons, Derwent power station is over to the left of this area and there are Pylons emanating from it so I had to plan my flight in advance to make sure I was well clear of them.

Derby Canal series : M1 to Draycott Canal cottages | DJI Mini2 | 4K
Have you ever wondered where the Derby Canal used to run? Well in this video and future ones I will by flying my drone along the old route of the Derby Canal from Swarkestone to Sandiacre in sections. In this episode the journey starts at M1 Motorway and ends at the Derby canal cottages on Hopwell Road, Draycott.
This video is made out of many small flights which I have joined together, it was a right pain to do this section, in order to maintain VLOS I had to take off in the middle of a section I wanted to film then fly out to the edge and fly as far as I could see it the other way then land then move to the middle of the next block. Because there are a lot of trees in some of these sections I had to drive to 4 different locations and walk quite a few miles! I got though 6 batteries during this section. I apologise for the poor joins and jumps in the footage due to this.
I would like to say a big hello to the many people I met while out filming this.
Best watched on a large television screen so you can see all the details, you will miss all the details on a phone.

How to explore the Derby Canal using my Google Street view photography.
Please note that at the time of writing this (May 9th 2021) I have surveyed 6 miles of the Derby canal for Google Street View, the section from Sandiacre all the way to Station Road, Spondon. This is an ongoing project and will take a few months to complete.
In this guide I will be showing you how to explore the route of the Derby canal using Street View photography that I have taken. This allows you to virtually walk along the route of the canal so you can see what it looks like today. In time as sections of it are restored I will resurvey them with street view, in those areas look out for the clock icon allowing you to select a different time period for the 360 degree view.
After watching this video, you will be able to confidently use Google maps and view Street View images along the former Derby canal route. You will know how to drag and zoom around the map and how to view and navigate your way along the route.
If you only have a smartphone then you will need to make sure you have installed the free Google Maps app first, this is available in the App Store on Apple devices or from the Play Store on Android devices.
Smartphone guide starts :

The River Derwent though Derby city centre by drone June 2022 | 4K
Sit back and enjoy this lovely slow flight very early morning flight along the river taking in local Derby landmarks along the way. I love how the river reflects the clouds and riverside buildings at this time of the day.

The flight starts at 120ft above the River Derwent with a view of St Mary’s bridge (built 1794) and St Alkmund’s Way bridge (built 1968).
On the left we have the former Waterside inn pub, on the right side of the river is St Mary’s Bridge Chapel (built in 13th Century).
00:27 Next landmark on the right is the Museum of Making
00:39 Centre of view is Cathedral Green swing bridge.
01:07 Centre of view is Exeter Bridge built 1927-1929

02:36 The council house, in the centre view you may notice a blocked off portal in the steps of the river, this is where the Markeaton brook used to flow into the River Derwent, this was redirected to
the old Mill fleam when the inner ring road was built.
02:56 on the left is the former Magistrates court and central police station building built 1932-1934. Today this is Riverside Chambers which houses a number of small businesses.

Information on my drone flying :
● My drone is a Class C0 drone sub-250g type, because its such a lightweight drone (236g), I'm allowed to fly it over residential and commercial property and people (but not crowds) without permission.
● I passed the theory test and have both valid flyer ID and Operator ID's.
● I have drone insurance (£5 million public liability insurance cover).
● I strictly follow all the CAA guidelines on flying my drone.
● I always fly in Cinematic mode (slow speed) as this is safer in urban environments.
● I plan all of my flights in advance of taking off to ensure I know my complete flight path and am aware of any obstacles in the way.
● In order to maintain VLOS (visual line of sight) with my drone I use extremely bright Strobe lights, if there are trees or buildings in my way then I have to land and carry on from a different location this means that I often have to join bits of flights together, I try and line up edits using telemetry to match altitude and position etc. but its not always possible to get good joins in clips so this can mean jump cuts and fades between clips.
● I carry out a risk assessment before each flight and ensure all batteries fully charged, GPS has a good fix etc.
● I always engage with anyone nearby informing them the reason for my flight.
Thanks
Andy

Whatstandwell - Peak District Videos
presents Whatstandwell
Oct 11, 2011 - This latest video, released on October 10th, in a long line of popular films made by the winning team, is already proving a hit with You Tube viewers. Made by the Peak District's leading web portal Peak District Online, the sounds and scenery of this beautiful little place are brought to life with stunning clarity, proving once again that this is proving to be a very exciting way for business owners to promote their wares.
Much better than a virtual tour, this video starts with images set to gloriously soothing music, the sights and sounds of the Peak District village brought to life with the sounds of birdsong in your ears! With gorgeous scenes from the start, this 3 minute video takes us on a journey down the Cromford Canal, a busy starting point with watery enjoyment for anyone in a recreational mood.
We tear ourselves away from the fun and frolics and follow the canal as it meanders through the willows, expecting to see Ratty and Mole any minute, we can feel the sunshine on our faces and smell the heat of the glorious Summer's day. We see the stunning views from the windows of scrumptious accommodation, in glorious colour, the music gently accompanying the viewer on a journey you won't want to come home from.
The atmospheric video highlights the wonderful flora and fauna of the surrounding area -- the glorious River Derwent winding through the lush green vegetation of overhanging ancient trees, Summer laden foliage dip into clear waters. A wonderful walking route - under or over packhorse bridges, accompanying the rushes and reeds at the water's edge.
A chocolate box village with stunning scenery and breathtaking views of the Dales from every angle, the valley this village nestles in is truly a gem to behold. With its own woodland, tea shops, bed and breakfasts, ye olde pub overlooks the scene, a welcome place to rest and watch the world go by.
Follow in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale, the lady with the lamp took many a walk this way, with or without her lamp - who knows? The now disused section of the canal invites us to walk beside the calm water with dogs and children welcome. And after a hard day's walking, enjoy a tea on a lawn you'll never forget.
Superb video and a gorgeous little village - you'll want to see for yourself. Put your feet up and dream of the Summer - a Summer spent in Whatstandwell

The last few months of life for a country station. The piece opens with the sidings out of use and views around the station. An 8F passes on a stone train and the Elliot Track Recording Railbus in seen. T W Wards were engaged to recover the sidings and demolish the signalbox with its burning embers just shown. The last day was Saturday 12th February 1966 and trains are shown arriving and departing. The final scene is taken on Sunday 13th February from a St Pancras express.
Borrowash's first station was opened in 1839 by the Midland Counties Railway briefly shown. This became the Station Master's House.
Borrowash was situated on the Midland Main Line and enjoyed latterly a broadly hourly service of Derby Midland to Lincoln St Marks diesel multiple unit service on weekdays.
Maybe it will be reopened one day to serve the growing population of the village.

Andy's Driving videos around Derbyshire, UK :
Are you an ex-pat of Derbyshire, feeling homesick? Or perhaps you just want a clear way of giving someone directions to a location in Derbyshire or just want to show people your village. Well in this video and the many others I have made, you will be able to take a virtual drive around the streets as though you were in the driving seat. I use a dash-mounted camera, Traffic lights and heavy traffic have been edited out.
