The Vaal River | Parys | A View from Above
The Vaal River, South Africa's longest river after the Orange, is a key water source for the country.
Its source is at Klipkapstel in Mpumalanga from where it flows to Douglas in the Northern Cape. Here it meets the mighty Orange River, which flows west into the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay.
The Vaal River, meaning 'drab' or 'dull' in Dutch because of its brown-grey colour, is divided into three catchment areas - the Upper Vaal, Middle Vaal and the Lower Vaal.
The Vaal Dam, near Vereeniging, has an 880km shoreline spanning 3 provinces, and is a favourite water sports playground offering canoeing, paddle-boating, power-boating, jet- skiing, and fishing, among other water sports.
The Upper Vaal is the Vaal River’s recreational hub. Centred on the towns of Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, expensive real estate and riverfront guesthouses line its banks, and you can enjoy everything from dining to fly fishing and Vaal River cruises.
This stretch of the river is exceptionally popular as a leisure destination, not least because the river is scenic and raftable all year round, except when it floods.
There are several hundred islands along the river, which help to create its white water rapids. The biggest and trickiest section of rapids is between Parys and Christiana, where rapids with names like 'Big Daddy' assure adrenalin-packed white water rafting.
The Middle Vaal, mainly an agricultural region, covers parts of the Free State and North West provinces, and the Lower Vaal comprises the area between the Bloemhof Dam and the confluence of the Vaal and Orange rivers at Douglas in the Northern Cape. (Credit -

S1 – Ep 353 – Hoopstad – Japie Greyling, the Brave Child Hero!
After leaving Bloemhof, our excitement at entering the Free State was short-lived as we navigated the worst road we have experienced on our travels yet, on our way to Hoopstad. However, the situation improved after about 15 kilometers. We were greeted by vast stretches of maize fields as far as the eye could see the deeper we got into the Free State. Approaching Hoopstad, the towering concrete silo's stood prominently on the horizon, as a testament to the town's agricultural roots. The strong farming community was evident as we explored the town, and we were struck by the grandeur of yet another magnificent church building at its centre. On the church grounds, we discovered the memorial of the brave child hero, Japie Greyling, whose remarkable bravery during the Anglo-Boer War left a lasting impression. The sight of the Correctional Facility in town added to the town's intriguing mix of places to see. Despite the initial challenges we had with the condition of the road, it was an overall fulfilling and informative visit to Hoopstad. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #hoopstad

S1 – Ep 351 – Christiana – We Crossed the Wide Vaal River Again!
On our way to Christiana, we were captivated by the impressive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, witnessing vast canals supplying water to the area, a sight that pleasantly surprised us. The journey through town led us over a remarkable, long single-lane steel-girded bridge which crossed the wide Vaal River. On the other side we attempted to find the nearby rock engravings. We couldn't locate them, but on the bright side, we had to cross the bridge for a second time! Our curiosity also led us to the Christiana on the Vaal Resort, which was closed because of the recent floods. Driving through the town we were amazed by an early twentieth-century church building which was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Town Hall from a distance and we were saddened by it being burnt down due to unrest. On a more positive note, we had the opportunity to visit the well-organised school, the Christiana School for the Blind. However, on our way out of town we passed the hospital and saw that it had burnt down due to human error while renovations were being done. Despite the mixed emotions, the visit was a unique and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northwestprovince #christiana

Bloemhof dam from above
This is an aerial video of Bloemhof Dam and Sandveld Nature Reserve taken with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision +
Bloemhof Dam is a dam in South Africa. It was originally known as the Oppermansdrif Dam when under construction during the late 1960s. It is located at the confluence of the Vaal River and the Vet River, on the border between the North West, and Free State, provinces of . The dam wall is very long with a total length of 4 270 m. The reservoir is very shallow, and therefore needs a large area to mean anything for water storage. The area around the reservoir (dam), has been a protected area, but because it lies on the border between provinces, these became two separate nature reserves. On the North West Province side lies the Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve, on the Free State side is the Sandveld Nature Reserve.
The town named Bloemhof lies on the North West side of the Vaal River.
The dam was commissioned in 1970, has a capacity of 1,269,000,000 cubic metres (4.48×1010 cu ft), and an area of 223 square kilometres (86 sq mi), the wall is 33 metres (108 ft) high. It is fed with the outflow from the Vaal dam (located upstream near Heidelberg) as well as rain collected in the Vaal-, Vet-, Vals- and Sandriver catchment areas.

Augrabies Falls Floods | 2021
Traveling to the Northern Cape earlier this year allowed me to visit one of South Africa's extraordinary National Parks.
Augrabies Falls National Park experienced an astonishing event earlier this year when the river was in flood.
This caused a beautiful sight to see whereby the waterfall was roaring with absolute power and beauty.
I managed to film the events before the flood to be able to see the comparison after the flood had taken place.
I would definitely recommend adding this trip to your journey because it is an amazing experience to have.
