It is the largest Indian state by area and the seventh largest by population. Rajasthan is located on the northwestern side of India, where it comprises most of the wide and inhospitable Thar Desert (also known as the Great Indian Desert) and shares a border with the Pakistani provinces of Punjab to the northwest and Sindh to the west, along the Sutlej-Indus river valley. Elsewhere it is bordered by five other Indian states: Punjab to the north; Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to the northeast; Madhya Pradesh to the southeast; and Gujarat to the southwest.
Major features include the ruins of the Indus Valley Civilisation at Kalibanga and Balathal, the Dilwara Temples, a Jain pilgrimage site at Rajasthan's only hill station, Mount Abu, in the ancient Aravalli mountain range and in eastern Rajasthan, the Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur, a World Heritage Site[12] known for its bird life. Rajasthan is also home to three national tiger reserves, the Ranthambore National Park in Sawai Madhopur, Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar and Mukundra Hill Tiger Reserve in Kota.
The state was formed on 30 March 1949 when Rajputana – the name adopted by the British Raj for its dependencies in the region[13] – was merged into the Dominion of India. Its capital and largest city is Jaipur. Other important cities are Jodhpur, Kota, Bikaner, Ajmer and Udaipur. The economy of Rajasthan is the ninth-largest state economy in India with ₹9.24 lakh crore (US$130 billion) in gross domestic product and a per capita GDP of ₹108,000 (US$1,500).[3] Rajasthan ranks 22nd among Indian states in human development index.[5]

Especially important was the coming of Islam, brought from the northwest by Arab, Turkish, Persian, and other raiders beginning early in the 8th century CE. Eventually, some of those raiders stayed; by the 13th century much of the subcontinent was under Muslim rule, and the number of Muslims steadily increased. Only after the arrival of the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama in 1498 and the subsequent establishment of European maritime supremacy in the region did India become exposed to major external influences arriving by sea, a process that culminated in the decline of the ruling Muslim elite and absorption of the subcontinent within the British Empire.Direct administration by the British, which began in 1858, effected a political and economic unification of the subcontinent. When British rule came to an end in 1947, the subcontinent was partitioned along religious lines into two separate countries—India, with a majority of Hindus, and Pakistan, with a majority of Muslims; the eastern portion of Pakistan later split off to form Bangladesh. Many British institutions stayed in place (such as the parliamentary system of government); English continued to be a widely used lingua franca; and India remained within the Commonwealth. Hindi became the official language (and a number of other local languages achieved official status), while a vibrant English-language intelligentsia thrived.

La ville de Mandawa, véritable musée à ciel ouvert, est située sur le passage de la célèbre route de la soie. Elle a été fondée au milieu du 18ième siècle.
A l'époque, les marchands avaient l'habitude de décorer richement leurs demeures avec des fresques et des peintures murales sur des thèmes religieux et historiques.
Ce qui laisse aujourd'hui place à de somptueuses demeures que l'on appelle Havelis. Nous en avons visité quelques-unes dont les Havelis Binsidhar Newatia et Gulab Rai Ladia.
Elles sont majoritairement constituées d'une cour intérieure entourée de plusieurs pièces et elles possèdent de nombreuses fenêtres qui sont ornées par des moucharabiehs.
Les moucharabiehs sont en fait des grillages qui facilitent non seulement la ventilation, mais qui permettent également de regarder à l'extérieur sans être vu.
Ces demeures ont été abandonnées peu à peu par leurs propriétaires et n'ont pas été rénovées.
Elles ont malheureusement subi les ravages du temps. Cependant, leur beauté résiste aux intempéries et il est toujours possible d'y admirer de nombreuses et magnifiques fresques.

Ram Pratap Nemani Haveli The Haveli has been recently converted into a Heritage Hotel where one can experience untouched frescos dating back to the 18th century.
Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli This haveli has a painting depicting Indra Dev on an elephant and Lord Shiva on his Nandi bull.Goenka Double HaveliThis haveli, with two gates, has a monumental façade of elephants and horses.
Murmuria Haveli The paintings of trains, cars, George V, and Venice were executed on the walls of this haveli during the 1930s by Balu Ram, one of the last working artists of the region.
