Bishop's Stordford, Hertfordshire, England, a walk down memory lane.

Me and my friend revisited Bishop's Stortford and we reminisced our time together in Bishops, the many Summer we spent here together. It is very evident in this video, how afternoon teatime gives us simple joy by just sitting, chatting and enjoying our favourite cake, a walk in the park and just laughing and giggling.

Oh I miss U.K. so much and if it was not Pandemic, we should have continued our train ride to London but better be cautious as we are hopeful that there will be another time.

This is kind of personal but I hope you enjoy and will able to relate this experience when you go out with your friend in this trying times. The view is also nice as well and as green is really cooler to the eyes, summer in the UK is always one of my favourite activities.

1 Day as a Tourist in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire | UK Travel Vlog

Welcome to 1 Day as a Tourist in Bishops Stortford!

In my latest UK Travel Vlog I visit this historic market town, beginning at Waytemore Castle with a chat about its medieval history. My next step is a walk along the ancient River Stort, the key to the town's thriving past success as a Navigated River, especially for the Malting Industry.

A short walk later I arrive at South Mills Arts for a fascinating insight into the town's past and incredible music heritage stemming from the famous Rhodes Centre! Having departed South Mills It was only fair that I dropped into the little arts workshop for a lesson in throwing pottery from Jessica before discovering remnants of the Town's Maltings within 'Millars three'

Finally I explore the town center and some great local characters before ending my trip at South Street Pantry for a superb bit of cake and tea!

Bloody Awesome!

Feel free to like and subscribe for more videos if you enjoyed this one and would love to see more of me gallivanting around the UK and getting into mischief!

Bishop's Stortford Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 30 miles north of northeast of central London, is the town of Bishop's Stortford.

Geographically, the town is situated around the point where the River Stort meets Stane Street - a Roman road linking Colchester to Braughing in Hertfordshire. The river's name is a back formation, i.e. the river was named after the town, rather than vice versa, due to assumptions made by cartographers.

In circa 1060, the Bishop of London bought the manor of Stortford, hence its 'Bishop's' prefix. By 1086 Waytemore Castle, just northeast of the town centre, had been built from wood, and was later rebuilt in stone around the 12th century. After the English Civil War, it was slighted, and only ruins remain today.

From the early 15th century St Michael's Church was built upon the site where a Saxon church is believed to have stood from as early as the 7th century. The present edifice was constructed in the Perpendicular Gothic style, although part of the tower and spire date from the early 19th century. It is Grade I listed, and features around 12 minutes into the walk.

Historic industries in Bishop's Stortford included malting and leather tanning. From the 17th century it became home to a number of coaching inns owing to its location roughly halfway between London and Cambridge. However, in 1670 this industry suffered a blow with the opening of the Hockerill bypass. Charles II had been a regular visitor to Newmarket Racecourse, but allegedly disliked Bishop's Stortford and prompted the Royal Surveyor to find an alternative route. Thus the road was diverted to Hockerill - the area just east of the town centre seen at the end of the walk.

In 1769 the River Stort was made navigable following an Act of Parliament which passed in 1766. This brought about a period of prosperity for the town's malting industry as cargo boats could travel into the River Lea, which in turn became navigable by 1771 providing access to the markets of London.

In 1842 the railway arrived in Bishop's Stortford courtesy of the Northern and Eastern Railway. Today, the station forms part of the West Anglia Main Line linking London Liverpool Street to Cambridge. Trains to London take around 40-50 minutes whilst trains to Cambidge take around 30-40 minutes, depending on stops.

Famous people from Bishop's Stortford include Cecil Rhodes who founded the territory of Rhodesia in the 1890s - a region generally comprising the areas of modern day Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Places to see in ( hertford - UK )

Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, England, and is also a civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of the county. Forming a civil parish, Since 1974, Hertford has been within the East Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire. The headquarters of Hertfordshire County Council is at County Hall in Hertford. East Herts District Council's offices almost adjoin County Hall, and there is also a Hertford Town Council based at Hertford Castle.

Hertford is at the confluence of four river valleys: the Rib, Beane and Mimram join the River Lea at Hertford to flow south toward the Thames as the Lee Navigation, after Hertford Castle Weir. The shared valley of the Lea and the Beane is called Hartham Common and this provides a large park to one side of the town centre running towards Ware and lying below the ridge upon which Bengeo is situated.

The town centre still has its medieval layout with many timber-framed buildings hidden under later frontages, particularly in St Andrew Street. Hertford suffers from traffic problems despite the existence of the 1960s A414 bypass called Gascoyne Way which passes close to the town centre. Plans have long existed to connect the A10 with the A414, by-passing the town completely. Nevertheless, the town retains very much a country-town feel, despite lying only 19.2 miles (30.9 km) north of Central London. This is aided by its proximity to larger towns such as Harlow, Bishop's Stortford and Stevenage where modern development has been focused.

In the town are the remains of the original Hertford Castle, principally a motte. The castle's gatehouse, the central part of which dates to a rebuild by Edward IV in 1463, is the home to Hertford Town Council. The Motte, from the original Motte and Bailey castle in Hertford, can be found just behind Castle Hall, a short distance from the modern castle.

In Railway Street can be found the oldest purpose-built Quaker Meeting House in the world, in use since 1670. The Hertford Corn Exchange was built on the site of a former gaol. Hertford Museum is housed in a 17th-century historic town house, with a Jacobean-style knot garden. A stained-glass window in St Andrew's Church is part of a fringe theory that links Hertford to the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail.

Hertford serves as a commuter town for London, and has two stations. Hertford East (on the Hertford East Branch Line). Hertford North (on the Hertford Loop Line) . Hertford also lies just west of the A10 and the Kingsmead Viaduct which links it south to London and the M25 and north to Royston and Cambridge.

Places to see in ( Great Dunmow - UK )

Places to see in ( Great Dunmow - UK )

Great Dunmow is a historic market town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is situated on the north of the A120 road, approximately midway between Bishop's Stortford and Braintree, 6 miles east of London Stansted Airport. Originally the site of a Roman settlement on Stane Street, the town thrived during the Middle Ages. Many buildings survive from this period, including a sixteenth-century town hall. Dunmow means Meadow on the Hill. The settlement was variously referred to as Dunmow Magna, Much Dunmow, or most commonly Great Dunmow.

Great Dunmow borders the former estate of Easton Lodge, a country house belonging to the Maynard family. The most notable member, Frances Maynard, became the Countess of Warwick and later a mistress of King Edward VII. As the Prince of Wales he was reportedly a regular visitor to the Estate, travelling from London on the train to Easton Lodge railway station. The initials CW are visible on a number of Victorian era properties in Great Dunmow. Known as Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick she was a generous philanthropist in the local community. As of 2017, Robert Nicholson is Emeritus Mayor of Great Dunmow.

The town's history is explained in the Maltings Museum on Mill Lane. A Roman small town developed on the junction between Stane Street and the Roman roads which ran north-east to south-west from Sudbury to London and north-west to southeast from Cambridge to Chelmsford. The main settlement area spread westwards from the road junction, with cemeteries on the outskirts. There was a second Roman settlement at Church End immediately to the north of present-day Great Dunmow. The site likely included a rural Roman Temple.

Great Dunmow is 8.3 miles (13.4 km) from Braintree railway station (63 minutes to London Liverpool Street) to the east and 9.2 miles (14.8 km) from Bishop's Stortford railway station (45 minutes to London Liverpool Street and 35 minutes to Tottenham Hale) to the west. Until 1952 the town was served by the Bishop's Stortford-Braintree Branch Line a line between these stations, which opened to passengers on 22 February 1869 and closed on 3 March 1952. The line continued in use for freight trains and occasional excursions, closing in stages with the final section to Easton Lodge closing on 17 February 1972. It is now possible to walk or cycle in either direction along the former track bed to Braintree Station, or to the edge of Bishop's Stortford.
