MILL BANK
Mill Bank thus named because there used to be a big mill at the Westminster Abbey
19th Century - Millbank penitentiary.
Star Shaped based on ideas of Jeremy Bentham's panopticon.
Biggest prison in Britain designed so prisoners could be observed by a single watchman.
It famously held prisoners for transportation to Australia.
After it was knocked down it became Tate Britain built on the fortune made by Henry Tate from sugar cubes of Tate And Lyle.
Henry Tate was a famous Philanthropist and donated his own paintings.
Lambeth Bridge
London’s Horseferry 1513 between Westminster and Lambeth Palace. Only place in central london to cross with your horse.
Mary of Modena, James ii’s catholic wife escaped after the revolution dressed as washerwoman and waited under the tower for carriage to Gravesend.
It closed when Westminster Bridge opened.
In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban the triple decker night bus shrinks to get between 2 buses. Harry is on his way to Leaky Cauldron after a terrible holiday with the Dursleys
In Fast and Furious 6 it's used as Moscow!!
Captain Bligh is buried in Church of St Mary Lambeth.
The Pineapples or corns on top of monuments are for John Tradescant, Charles I’s gardener who grew first pineapple in England and is buried in church.
Lambeth Palace
House of the Archbishop of Canterbury since 12th century.
The 15th Century brick gatehouse is the finest Tudor example in England.
Ann Boleyn was interrogated here in 1536 and forced to confess to Bishop Cranmer.
Elizabeth i’s bishop was Mathew Parker.
Queen called him nosey because of his big nose and his taking interest in others business.
He was dug up and thrown in a heap in the garden during the commonwealth but then reburied after the restoration.

Top 10 Most Dangerous Areas in London
Kicking off our countdown at number ten is Newham. This area, known for locations like Stratford, Beckton, and Upton Park, reports eight hundred crimes per square kilometer annually.
Next, at number nine, we have Tower Hamlets. Nestled east of the City of London, this area sees nine hundred and forty crimes per square kilometer each year. Its hotspots include Spitalfields, Banglatown, Whitechapel, and Bethnal Green.
Number eight brings us to Southwark. With nine hundred and eighty crimes reported annually per square kilometer, hotspots in this area include Cathedrals, The Lane, Chaucer, Grange, East Walworth, and Camberwell Green.
At number seven, we find Kensington and Chelsea. Despite its reputation for luxury, this area sees one thousand and ten reported crimes per square kilometer each year, particularly in areas like Brompton and Earl’s Court.
Coming in at number six is Hammersmith and Fulham. This pricey West London area sees over one thousand crimes reported annually per square kilometer, with hotspots including Shepherd's Bush Green and Hammersmith Broadway.
Midway through our list at number five, we find Camden. Known for its bustling tourist scene and lively nightlife, Camden reports one thousand one hundred and ten crimes per square kilometer each year. Notable hotspots include Holborn, Covent Garden, Camden Town, Bloomsbury, Regent’s Park, and King’s Cross.
At number four is Lambeth. Infamous for its crime reputation, Lambeth sees one thousand one hundred and ten crimes per square kilometer annually, particularly in areas like Brixton, Coldharbour, Clapham Town, Oval, and St Leonards.
Our top three begins with Hackney. With one of the highest crime rates at one thousand one hundred and eighty per square kilometer annually, Hackney is home to both affluent and low-income residents. Notable areas of concern are Haggerston, Dalston, Hoxton, and Hackney Central.
Just missing the top spot at number two is Islington. This area reports one thousand four hundred and ninety crimes per year per square kilometer, with areas of concern including Bunhill, Finsbury Park, and Barnsbury.
And finally, the most dangerous area in London is Westminster. Due to its high population and influx of tourists, Westminster sees one thousand five hundred and eighty reported crimes per square kilometer annually.
Non Touristy Things to Do In London - Dickens Museum and Foundlings
This is a very interesting area and a lovely place to visit for non touristy things to do in London like the Charles Dickens Museum and Foundling Museum, just a stone's throw from Lambs Conduit Street.
Dickens and his wife moved here in 1837 and he wrote Oliver Twist and Pickwick Papers here. They’ve got a bunch of his writing materials, paintings furniture and much more….
In Long Yard is where the original conduit was. William Lamb 1577 paid £1500 to renovate a conduit house in Snow Hill and water was fed off to here from a tributary of River Fleet, which people said tasted ok compared to the later New River which opened.
The Lamb Pub - from 1720 in named after William Lamb. It still has snob screens from Victorian times so you could drink without being observed by the bar staff.
Lambs Conduit Street itself is mostly independent shops cafe, wine bars. No chains. Partially pedestrianised and even the supermarket is run by the community.
Great Ormond Street Hospital originally only had 10 beds (1852) 1st UK hospital dedicated to children.
in 1929 JM Barrie gave all rights of his plays and books to fund the hospital’s research.
The Foundling Museum in Brunswick Square (Coram Fields) - In 1739 Thomas Coram, master mariner was appalled at the amount of children abandoned by their parents so he campaigned for 17 years until George II granted a royal charter for the Foundling Hospital.
Hogarth and Handel helped. Hogarth got people to donate art and Handal performed the Messiah in the chapel.
It became first public art gallery in UK and it’s now the Foundling museum.

You can cycle from Bethnal Green in the east end to Dalston in Hackney in about 10 minutes, entirely on protected cycled lanes and very quiet streets.
The route is just under 2 miles and makes use of the Bethnal Green low traffic neighbourhood, the Queensbridge Road cycle lanes, and the London Fields low traffic neighbourhood.
By public transport the journey takes about 20 minutes including a substantial walk to the station, or a longer bus.
