Chiemsee is also called the Bavarian Sea, since it’s the largest standing water of the province.
This lake was also created in the ice age and has an area of approximately 18 kilometres by 14 kilometres. The area was already inhabited in Roman times and according to legend, Pontius Pilot died in exile on its banks.
The nearby village of Chieming is considered the capital of the area. This offers the best view of the islands and we can reach them with the pleasure-boat that sails from here. The Herreninsel, or the Gentleman Island is the largest island of the Chiemsee. It’s situated on the south-western shore of the lake and has an area of 2.5 square kilometres. If you don’t feel like walking the 2.5 kilometres to the Neues Schloss, there are horse drawn carriages to take you there. Traces of construction work from times before Christ have been found on the southern part of the island. The monastery of the Order of Saint Benedict is also a ruin, the building itself was destroyed by the marauding Hungarians. The order of Saint Augustine built a new monastery and church in 1130, which they used until the order was dissolved in 1803. Ever since Ludwig II built the Neues Schloss, or New Castle on the island, the monastery has been called the Old Castle.
The small, inhabited island of the lake is the Fraueninsel.
A female order of the Order of Saint Benedict settled on this island in 770. Their cloister also became a victim of the marauding Hungarians. A Roman style church was built on its foundations in the 11th century and was rebuilt in Gothic style 400 years later. During a renovation, the remains of a Carolingian-era palace were discovered under the gate of the main entrance.
From the island, we sail back to the mainland and continue our journey from Chiemsee on the small train.
With the green nostalgic cars of the Chiemseebahn, we can reach the neighbouring holiday spot of Grabenstatt. From there, the warm water of the Tütensee is a good alternative for those who find the water of Chiemsee too cold to bathe in.

Bernau am Chiemsee liegt im Südosten Bayerns, am Fuße der Chiemgauer Alpen und bietet einen sehr hohen Freizeitwert. Durch die besondere Lage direkt am See und an den Bergen, bietet der Ort eine Vielzahl an Freizeitmöglichkeiten: Wandern, Radfahren, Mountainbiken oder Wassersportarten, wie z.B. die Trendsportart Stand-Up-Paddling sind im Sommer die beliebtesten Freizeitaktivitäten während des Urlaubes am Chiemsee. Im Winter stehen den Gästen je nach Schneelage Langlaufloipen zur Verfügung. Die nahegelegenen Skigebiete runden den Winterurlaub in Bernau ab.
Durch die verkehrsgünstige Lage an der Autobahn A8 (München-Salzburg) und an der Bahnlinie München-Salzburg ist eine unbeschwerte Anreise ebenfalls möglich.

Chiemsee is a lake in Bavaria, Germany. It is the largest lake in Germany and the third-largest lake in Central Europe. Chiemsee is located in the Alps, about 25 kilometers south of Salzburg, Austria. The lake has a surface area of 81.6 square kilometers and an average depth of 74 meters. The deepest point of the lake is 125 meters.
Chiemsee is home to 13 islands, the largest of which are Herreninsel, Fraueninsel, and Krautinsel. Herreninsel is home to Herrenchiemsee Palace, a replica of Versailles Palace in France. Fraueninsel is home to a Benedictine monastery. Krautinsel is a public island.
Chiemsee is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can swim, canoe, boat, and fish in the lake. There are also hiking and biking trails around the lake. Chiemsee is a beautiful lake with stunning scenery. Here is the itinerary of our trip to Chiemsee - - Train from Munich Ostbahnhof to Prien am Chiemsee (1 hr journey) - Prien am Chiemsee to Chiemsee lake by Chiemsee bahn (10 minutes). Here we visit Prien am Chiemsee Germany and Chiemsee Lake on a day trip from Munich. Prien am Chiemsee Germany is just a train trip away from Munich. On this day trip from Munich to Prien am Chiemsee Germany we take a ride on the Chiemsee-bahn steam railway to the docks for the Prien am Chiemsee boat trip across Chiemsee lake to the island of Herreninsel. On Herreninsel we explore Herrenchiemsee Palace and it's extensive gardens which include some magnificent fountains. Then we move on to explore the island and the many viewpoints the island has to offer over Chiemsee Lake and the far off mountains. To round off the day take another Chiemsee Lake boat trip and the return trip on the Chiemsee-bahn steam railway to round off a wonderful day out.
The journey starts with an approximately 1 hour train trip from Munich to Prien am Chiemsee where buying a Bayern ticket is the best option. You can buy a Bayern ticket using the DB Navigator application on your phone, or from the web site at or if you prefer from the ticket machines at any railway station. The Bayern ticket is especially cost effective if travelling in a group.
Once at Prien am Chiemsee we then get a combined return ticket for the Chiemsee-bahn steam railway and the Prien am Chiemsee boat trip to Herreninsel. The steam train takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the boat dock and the boat trip to Herreninsel also takes about 10-15 minutes. The Chiemsee-bahn steam railway in Bavaria, Germany is one of the oldest continuous steam operated railways in the world. It has been in operation since 1887. Timetable: Prices :
For the ticket to the guided tour of the Herrenchiemsee palace you can buy your ticket at the ticket office which is 2 minutes walk from the boat dock. The guided tours are done in either German, English or Italian and the tour takes approximately 40 minutes.

The rivers Tiroler Achen and Prien flow into the lake from the south, and the river Alz flows out towards the north. The Alz flows into the Inn which then merges with the Danube. Am Samstag, 28. März 2015, waren viele Ausflügler zu Fuß oder mit dem Fahrrad am Chiemsee unterwegs, um das sonnige Wetter bei ca. 10 Grad Mittagstemperatur zu genießen. Gstadt am Chiemsee Spaziergang | Bayern, Deutschland
Die Gemeinde gehörte seit dessen Gründung zum reichsunmittelbaren Kloster Frauenchiemsee. Von der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts bis zur Säkularisation 1803 war Gstadt eine eigenständige Hofmark des Klosters und kam danach unter bayerische Verwaltung. Der Ort wurde im Zuge des Gemeindeedikts von 1818 eine selbständige politische Gemeinde. Zwischen 1988 und 2018 wuchs die Gemeinde von 1060 auf 1192 um 132 Einwohner bzw. um 12,5 %.
