Belle Plaine Minnesota, on Our Story's In the Passenger's Seat #17

Minnesota River: Belle Plaine to Jordan
09/28/2024 - 10 mile paddle on the Minnesota River from Belle Plaine to Jordan. Took about 3:15, but easily could have spent more time on the river taking breaks on the sandbars. No portages. Water level was LOW at 5.4ft @Jordan per

Forgotten Places: Exploring Kansas Ghost Towns Sumner County
Exploring the Forgotten Towns of Sumner County, Kansas.
Riverdale, Kansas, like many rural places in the Great Plains, faces an uncertain future. Could it ever see a revival? Maybe, if Wichita ever experiences rapid suburban growth… but let’s be real, Wichita hasn’t expanded as fast as places like Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Omaha, or Des Moines. If anything, Riverdale might just vanish like so many other small towns in rural Kansas.
But today, we’re not just stopping there—we’re hitting the road to explore the small cities and non-cities of Sumner County!
🛣️ Belle Plaine – Founded in 1871, incorporated in 1884. A small city (or is it a town?) nestled in a valley between the Arkansas and Ninnescah Rivers.
🌊 Oxford – Founded in 1869, right along the Arkansas River.
🏡 Geuda Springs – Population 158. Technically a city, but it sure doesn’t look like one. Also, it’s split between two counties!
🏠 South Haven & Hunnewell – One is small, the other is really small. Hunnewell, founded in 1880, has only 44 residents today!
🐄 Caldwell – A true old Cowtown, founded in 1871 along the historic Chisholm Trail. Named after U.S. Senator Alexander Caldwell.
🌾 Corbin – Population, maybe 12? Ghost Town status achieved.
🏛️ Milan – Named after Milan, Italy, a city with over 1 million people but with just 56 residents, it’s not quite the same… and it never really has been.
Kansas is full of quirky, forgotten places, and we’re here to document what’s left of them. Who knows how long these towns will still be around?
🔔 Subscribe for more road trip adventures and forgotten history!
👍 Like & Comment – Have you been to any of these places? What’s your favorite small town story?

The Sunflower Experience - a unique place to have fun
I always see the pictures of a sea of bright yellow sunflowers & gape in aww at the beauty. I wanted to experience that for myself!
The Sunflower Experience did not disappoint. It was a fun field of flowers!
Pheasant Run Farm is in Belle Plaine, Iowa along highway 30. They have about 10 acres of large sunflowers planted. There are 2 platforms for viewing, plus several walking paths where they have added old farm equipment for taking photos. There are a few kids activities too, mostly geared towards young children. This place would be perfect for family photos!
For more info check out their website at: pheasantrunfarm.com
This particular video is more informational in nature, to help you know what to expect when you go, but it is also great if you just want to see some beautiful photos of sunflowers.
I had fun finding music for this one & I hope you agree I found a great soundtrack!

00:00 - INTRO* Next, let’s explore Seaside - one of the coolest areas in Oregon! I will show you what this ocean side city is all about so join me, only on the ETA.
01:55 - Seaside, found in 1899 and located just N. of Cannon Beach is a spectacular resort city in the PNW with lots to offer! Seaside is just over 4 square miles in total area with a population of about 7 thousand residents.
03:30 – Looking right onto the Pacific Ocean, this side of the Beach is rocky. It is called the Seaside Cove and is along the Ocean Vista Dr. If you head just North along the Beach on the S. Promenade, you will be on the sandy side of the Beach.
04:26 - Seaside is a fun place to be and the place is bursting with many shops, awesome restaurants, great bars and arcades. There are a ton of places to eat. It’s a great family location to relax, hike, kayak or do any other water sport activities.
05:29 – The hill you see in the distance is the Tillamook Head which is located in the Ecola State Park. It is a high promontory which is a raised mass of land projected into a lowland and the Pacific Ocean.
06:32 - The Tillamook Head, named after the Native American Tribe, forms a steep rocky bluff standing at about 1,200 ft high. It was formed by the lava spreading to the Columbia Gorge to a 600-foot thick basalt sill. It is a remnant of a flow of 15-million-year-old Columbia River basalt.
07:27 - The greenery you see on the Head are the Sitka Spruce trees.
08:14 - What is the best part of Seaside? It is the 1.5 miles long promenade that stretches along the Pacific Ocean going from the Avenue U all the way to the 12th Ave! This “Seaside Oregon Promenade” is also referred to as “The Prom.”
09:24 - Along the Prom you will see some very nice houses. A lot of these are the vacation rentals. Some of the houses you can actually buy.
11:14 - On June 21st 1942 approximately 6 months after the Pearl Harbor attack by the Japanese, Fort Stevens, a military installation guarding the mouth of the Columbia River was shelled by the Long-Range Japanese submarine firing a 5.5 inch deck gun at the shore. Without any warning, 17 shells were fired with most landing at the Seaside beach. Japanese sub was only 6 miles South of Fort Stevens. Fortunately no significant damage was done.
12:38 - On March 27th of 1964 a huge 9.2 magnitude earthquake hit near Alaska causing a destructive Tsunami reaching and flooding parts of Seaside. With all the dark history behind, today the town of Seaside is as beautiful as it gets. It is a peaceful and family friendly city with serene views and pleasant atmosphere.
15:19 - These white sandy beaches are so relaxing it make you forget about the outside World. The sand is soft and pleasant to walk on. You can fly kites or just gaze at the nature.
16:34 – This is the North end side of the prom right at the 12th Ave.
17:27 – Just across the Columbia River via the Astoria-Megler bridge is the WA state. The steel bridge, aka the Columbia River Bridge opened in 1966 and it is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. It is just over 4 miles long and 200 feet high. This bridge was the final segment of the US Route 101 to be completed between Olympia, Washington and Los Angeles, California. Today an average of 7,100 vehicles cross the bridge each day.
18:48 - Heading on the Lewis and Clark Trail Highway along the coast you will see a lot of beautiful views just like these ones. So enjoy.
19:22 - PREVIEW* Next, let’s fly back to JAPAN and straight to our favorite pizza place in Yokosuka. Don’t miss it – ONLY on the Epic Travel Adventures!
