Granada Province: Hidden Secrets

Mention Granada and people automatically think of the Palace of the Alhambra, the most visited tourist attraction in Andalucia and a glorious reminder of the splendours of the al-Andalus period. However, Granada province has much more to offer.
The Sierra Nevada mountain range, just outside and within view of the city, includes Mulhacen, the highest mountain on the Iberian Peninsula and beneath its summit, the winter sports centre at Pradollano. A two-hour drive south and you can bask on the beaches of the Costa Tropical, a favourite destination for Spanish families.
Almuñécar has been a favoured spot since before the Phoenicians arrived on the coast and is now a popular resort for Spanish families.
Inland, the Granada Geopark, mostly set in ‘badlands’, is a complete history of human endeavour in the area dating back 1.4 million years. Visit the Megalithic Park at Gorafe, an Iberian oppidum at Baza, a fossil bed recording extinct animals through the entire Quaternary period, and an Argar bronze age settlement. Geologists, historians and those just interested in the remote past could easily spend two weeks in the Geopark and see something different every day.

This video looks at the hidden secrets of Granada province.

El Bañuelo | Arab Baths | Granada | Spain | Andalusia | Andalucia Spain | Visit Spain

El Bañuelo | Arab Baths | Granada | Spain | Andalusia | Andalucia Spain | Visit Spain

The Bañuelo or Casa Nogal Baths was declared a national monument in 1918 and consists of three rooms preceding a house with a small interior patio. The cold, warm and hot rooms were constructed using reconstructed Roman, Visigoth and Caliphate elements. The first room the visitor enters is the cold room, or bayt al-barid, which is followed by the warm room, or bayt al-wastani, the most spacious of the three.

While these baths are considered to date from the 11th century, their typology, which is very similar to that of the Nasrid era, suggests they are from a much later date.
The Hammam al-Yawza or Baño del Nogal has been known by the diminutive Bañuelo since the end of the 19th century, due to being smaller than the royal baths of the Alhambra.

Schedule :
SEPTEMBER 15 - APRIL 30 : Monday to Sunday 10:00 - 17:00
MAY 1ST - SEPTEMBER 14 : Monday to Sunday 09:00 - 14:30 and 17:00 - 20:30

The Granada Geopark

The Granada Geopark is a huge area in the north of Granada province in Andalucia. It is a place to explore. Within the Geopark you will find traces of humans dating back 1.4 million years, an astounding concentration of megalithic dolmens built by Neolithic people, the largest concentration of dolmens in the world, fortified settlements from the Argaric period and the oppidums of the later Iberians. All this is set in the badlands, an arid plain, the Baza depression, all that remains of a large, prehistoric lake, deeply riven with gullies and valleys.
You will not fail to be awed.

Wild Spain - Capítulo 85 - Geoparque de Granada.

Puedes programar tu próxima salida a la naturaleza española viendo en este mapa de google maps todos los espacios naturales que van saliendo en Wild Spain:
You can schedule your next outing to Spanish nature by viewing all the natural spaces that appear in Wild Spain on this google map:

The Granada Geopark extends over an exceptional territory in the eastern part of Andalusia. The geology of the region has conditioned the life and culture of its inhabitants from prehistory to today. Geology, geomorphology, archeology and cultural heritage are closely linked in one of the territories where the oldest human remains and ancient traditions of the European Continent are found.
The Geopark territory, with 4,722 km2 of 47 municipalities belonging to the regions of Guadix, Baza, Huéscar and Montes, includes the current river valleys generated during the Quaternary in the North of the Province of Granada, as well as much of the Cuenca de Guadix-Baza and part of the mountains that define it. This territory has been traditionally known, from a geographical point of view, as the depressions or “dimples” of Guadix and Baza.
The valleys in the north of Granada, the main protagonists of our Geopark and currently draining the territory into the Atlantic Ocean, have been created by river erosion in the last half a million years. Prior to its formation and for approximately 5 million years, most of the Geopark's territory was configured by a wide fluvial system that had no outlet to the sea and that drained its waters into a large lake. This endorheic (landlocked) stage generated one of the best sediment records from the continental Quaternary of Europe.
After the end of the endorheic stage, the current drainage network (with exit to the sea) has generated an impressive river modeling in which the landscape of gullies / badlands stands out. The semi-arid nature of the region, with sparse vegetation on the slopes of its valleys, favors the observation and study of quaternary sediments, arranged in horizontal layers of great lateral continuity.

8 Best Hikes in Andalusia Spain 🇪🇸 Hiking Road Trip

Hiking in Andalusia, Spain, Europe. We traveled to Southern Spain on a road trip and hiked 8 of the best hiking trails in Andalusia (Andalucia). It is very diverse, and so is our list of the hiking trails — each one is the best in its own category and they showcase the wild and naked nature of the Spanish South. These hidden gems are spread out through all of Andalusia, starting from Almeria in the East to the National Park of Sierra Grazalema in the West. This video includes also some travel tips and where to park your car at the trailheads.

Two out of the eight trails require a reservation in advance:

— The Caminito del Rey trail which has also an entrance fee. Tickets can be purchased for guided group tours which costs 18 EUR, or a single visit without guide for 10 EUR. We preferred the unguided tour, but there's a daily limit of 10 tickets in this category, and our dates was fully booked already. So we had to buy the guided tour tickets, but we ended up without the group as you can see in the video.

— And the Garganta Verde trail which is for free but requires a permit that you can get by sending them an email to cvelbosque.amaya@reservatuvisita.es. They have several trails, so include the following information in your email:

I would like to apply for a permit for 2 persons:
Name: ...
Passport number: ...
How many people going on the walk: ...
